lathany: (Dice)
Friday was [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and my sixteenth wedding anniversary. We celebrated in the usual way - with food and alcohol. Food was little savoury tarts, then prawns, fish, stuffed courgettes and three grain rice followed by bananas and sultanas fried in rum and served with cream. The alcohol was Pimms, a rather nice bottle of white and Grand Marnier. Sixteen is the first anniversary in my Book of Lists that doesn't have an associated material and it suddenly feels like a big number.

From having had a relatively quiet year last year, 2011 has been full of roleplaying games. Last week we had two on.
  • Dreadful Secrets of Candlewick Manor - This is a supplement to Monsters and Other Childish Things being run by [livejournal.com profile] smiorgan for [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy, TheHattedOne, [livejournal.com profile] triskellian, [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and me. We play eight and nine year old mutant orphans who no-one loves. We've had two sessions to date, the first of which involved everyone picking on us (although we were eventually saved from The Bad Guys by a psychotic car) and the second of which involved us finally making a friend and watched other people have bad things happen to them.
  • Meteor - This was with the party who have just completed their fourth pilgrimage (of four). They spent the session critical-failing magic tests and fighting minions of the Diseased Ones. I'm now heading for a session involving both parties. And a few gods. I'm hoping that they'll get to reach some agreement about the Diseased Ones. Or at least agree that they are A Bad Thing.
It's been a while since I ran a one-off, but there's a Con next year and I'll be planning something for it. I recently read an entry (over here) about one-offs and I agree with the points raised:
  • Signpost the plot clearly.
  • Character attributes should fit on an index card.
  • Maximum of 2 fights, preferably 1.
  • Individual character information should fit on a sheet of A4.
  • Stick to 1 scene per hour (on average).
  • Give the PCs a reason to work together.
  • World - keep 1 location per scene maximum, plus outside the sandbox as one location.
  • Assume your PCs will never sleep until the game is finished.
I would add three points to the general list and one for Con one-offs. Firstly, the better one-offs I've seen tend to work on a strong concept which can play out in a few hours (this is in the same way that constructing a short story is different from constructing novels). Secondly, one-offs almost always want pre-defined characters. I have seen player-generated characters for one-offs that worked, but they tended to work because it was impossible not to rather than because they were well-chosen. Thirdly, make sure that the characters all have a role; this is equally true for other types of game but arises particularly in one-offs because the characters have less time over which to establish niches for themselves; such things have to be pre-established. Also, for Con one-offs, it's important to be aware of the number limitations (ie. don't write for a party of four if the Con needs six). So:
  • Strong, one-off suited concept.
  • Pre-gen characters (or a very strong steer for players).
  • Ensure that there's a role for everyone and it couldn't equally be done by some subset of the party.
  • Check limitations - such as number of players - for the Con.
My past solo one-offs have been rather hit-and-miss - Working With Children went well whereas the BadgerCon Athory one-off wasn't particularly memorable. My main failings are usually that I don't run with a good one-off concept (it tends to be too big) and that the party has come unstuck. It is perhaps no co-incidence that I've generally had more success with mini-campaigns (such as Kaleidoscope and From The Cellars of Xanadu).

Much of my spare time has been spent on Twin Peaks episodes (which I'll review at the end of the season). But not all.
  • The Lies of Locke Lamora - This was recommended by [livejournal.com profile] al_fruitbat and [livejournal.com profile] _alanna and I really loved it. It's a very clever plot set in a fantasy background about thieves who become confidence tricksters. Technically, it's the start of a series but the book is fairly stand-alone (although there's at least one character you expect to meet and then don't and another whose exit isn't detailed). About my only whinge is that the book is very light on female characters.
  • Brighton Rock - We watched the remake, which is worth it for Helen Mirren alone (and a bit of Gollum). However, the film itself isn't a masterpiece and is generally a bit too dark for my tastes.
I don't have much work news to report. However, the next time I want to take a long lunch break at work, I think I might spend it poking round the British Museum. I've finally figured out that it's just round the corner from where I work. And it's free.

Back in the spring of 2000 I started a Swordsmaster campaign called "Lathany" set in a country of the same name. This ended in the Spring of 2002 (the final session was 10/03/2002 - if anyone cares ;-)) and then most of the characters (and all of the players) moved north to Athory for a follow-on campaign.

Last night, it all ended.

Lathany versus Athory )

I plan to keep records of the characters and to write a little about what happens to them over the next five or ten years. However there isn't going to be another Swordsmaster campaign (not next, anyway) and so this is probably the last of Swordsmaster II to be seen outside of one-offs.

Finally, a big thank you to my players ([livejournal.com profile] venta, [livejournal.com profile] quisalan, [livejournal.com profile] chrisvenus, [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy, [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and [livejournal.com profile] ao_lai) for putting up with being kidnapped, poisoned, threatened (and that was just by the twins!). I've really enjoyed running the game.

Before beginning the actual session, a round of stat increases took place. This seemed to go down rather well ;-)

That Swordsmaster Session )

As ever, let me know if anything is missing, incorrect, etc.

Slightly late, but never mind.

Six hundred power points per twelve square miles )

As ever, comments and additions welcomed.

At some point I'm going to produce an actual life update rather than game write-ups and reviews. But not right now.

From Chir Shrine to Leonides' Island without touching the floor )

Writing these things directly after the session is much easier.

The Siege of Chir Shrine )

Note to players (3) : Please let me know about any obvious (or subtle) omissions - I left it a bit too long before writing up this time.

Sunday was the first Athory (Swordsmaster) game of the New Year. I have been updating the Athory map and, at some point, will put it up on the web site along with the amended Duchy pages (a destroyed city here, an assassinated Duke there). In the meantime, however, the players got to see it at the session.

Problems in the Dry Duchy )

A rather reduced and all-male party continued their stay in Carnival, City of Quickest Ruler Changes.

And Lord Roland took charge of the politics )

Next year should be the last Athory year when my Swordsmaster GMing comes to an end. It'll be interesting to see whether any of Athory is above water by then...

As ever, an update on my Swordsmaster game.

The arrival of Tengath and Gref )

Must remember to update the Athory pages. Change the names of the Dukes and Duchesses, where necessary. That might take a while.

Yesterday was my Athory session.

Will the real Duke Lawrence step forward please ? )

Meanwhile, fed up with baby food, Beatrice had been eying up the session snacks. She started by trying a few grapes - but found them rather large for her mouth. Undeterred, she looked around for something better; and found it. She sneaked up to the closed pack of mini muffins. As soon as she was certain that all the adults were pre-occupied with their strange game, she opened it and pulled out two mini-muffins sticking one straight in her mouth. Then of course, she was spotted. Mummy confiscated both muffins, then relented and gave one back after peeling the paper off of it. Mummy also whisked out the camera and took photographs. There were many chocolatey crumbs and expressions of enjoyment. Then Daddy returned from the bathroom to be told all about it.

Beatrice in a chocolatey mess is always [livejournal.com profile] bateleur's baby (as opposed to mine). Daddy got out the vacuum cleaner. He vacuumed the crumbs up off the floor (despite Bea's best efforts to pick them up and stuff them in her mouth first) and then vacuumed the Beatrice. Bea didn't like this at all and burst into tears ("I've never seen her so upset" exclaimed [livejournal.com profile] chrisvenus). However a couple of hugs later and she had recovered.

[livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy stuck around to do his saintly babysitting bit, so [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and I went out for a curry after cotting the babies. It's been several months since I last went for curry. I usually prefer chinese because meals out since the babies have been rare and the chinese is better. However I enjoyed my lamb pasanda, boiled rice (I've not been able to cope with the richness of any other type of rice since my post-pregnancy diet), peshwari nan and carribean coffee.

And Dom's mother confirmed that the babies will be disappearing again in thirty-three days time...

Sunday saw a change of pace for my Athory campaign.

One thing after another )

It's good to have [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy back. With or without Kalen/Istan.
lathany: (Invading)
Well, the return of [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy to my Swordsmaster game is planned for Sunday. Will he come back as Istan/Kalen or will the players meet someone new ? They'll have to wait for the game to find out.

Previously in Athory... )

Otherwise, I have a short story to write by the end of the month, a book to continue and an idea for a one-off (or possibly the first of a number of one-offs) which I want to write down.

Oh, and twins to watch (plus a new twins gallery to assemble).

Saturday morning saw [livejournal.com profile] frax and [livejournal.com profile] cardinalsin arrive for some Bridge.

Bridge and the Gibbon )

The following morning, the Athory players arrived, surprisingly punctual, for Swordsmaster.

Visiting the Dry Duchy )

Back in the worlds of Stark and Arcadia, The Longest Journey continues. When I finally complete it, I will write up a review of the game.

Anyone who has been within five miles of my LJ recently will know that [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and I are currently twinless. This has resulted in a week off.

<Sound of trumpets>

Theoretically.

In practice I have been working on The Big Household Project - the repainting of the lounge radiator.

Radiators - only for the bored or unbelieving reader )

Enough on radiators and Baldur's Gate already, let's talk Swordsmaster )

The week hasn't all been DIY and roleplaying )

After several days of (mainly) enjoyment (in part due to the consumption of many, many thousands of calories), [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and I rang the grannies to find out how they were coping. Fortunately, both appeared to be surviving although Ryan was proving a little too fast a crawler for their liking (Granny Jo took the pushchair out and came back to find him in the garden). Much to my surprise, I actually missed the twins a bit. Not enough to want them back early. But enough that I should escape instant depression when they return at the weekend.

What else have I planned for the rest of the week ? Well, even more food on Friday evening (yummy Thai stuff this time - plus great company), preceded by a shopping trip in the afternoon. Also, possibly a cinema visit either tonight or Saturday to see Solaris. Then there is the Buffy and Angel double bill (and the inevitable LJ write up). Plus, I have this hope that I will suddenly be hit with some wonderful game ideas for May (one-off stuff wished for).

But, best of all, a couple more twin-free days !

<Sound of trumpets>

OK. Done now.

Yesterday a group of Chrises descended upon New Workshops for the latest installment of the Swordsmaster Athory campaign.

For once there were no assassination attempts )

Meanwhile, the twins are not pleased. The musical snail has died again, producing a mere whisper of a noise. They can no longer play "Old McDonald had a farm"/"Twinkle, twinkle little star"/etc. over the soundtrack of "The Fellowship of the Ring". And it is Mummy's fault. Definitely. She had better buy some new batteries before discontent really sets in.

Another Swordsmaster session, another attempt on the life of Lord Roland...

More about Roland's lucky escapes )

Ryan and Beatrice, of course, were present for most of the session. Dom built a large Ryan-barricade next to the fridge to give him a large crawl area and let him loose. It seemed to work rather better than the smaller crawl area had during Dom's game. Krys ended up feeding Bea her milk.

My play-by-email game, Fallen Star, has reached day six. Whilst the ship appears to no longer be sailing the rivers of Hell, the PCs reckon that they are still a long way from Norway. The number of people in the infirmary and locked up continues to rise. As does the "missing persons" list.

In real-world news, my editing continues. Sixty-five chapters completed. I should be finished by the end of the year - with luck.

It was a busy weekend, with babysitting grannies, Swordsmaster and, of course, the twins.

On Saturday Dom and I went to visit Ruth - a friend of mine (a former work colleague) who lives in Catford. We had a large Italian meal (garlic bread, lasagne and tiramisu) with white wine and a long, long chat. We discussed Deloitte and Touche, twins, celebrating relationship anniversaries, maternity leave, work colleagues and children-and-relationships.

It raised a much-debated topic which I often find difficult to discuss with people who hold strong views. Namely the "do you want children ?" question.

Children ? )

Anyway, back home from the sprog debate we discovered that in our absence Granny Jo had had a wonderful time and both Ryan and Beatrice were exhausted. Everyone was happy.

On Sunday my Athory game took place.

Assassination at the High Summer Dance of Masks )

After such a busy weekend, this morning started rather tamely, with the usual breakfast feeds and only a large pile of washing up acting as an (unwelcome) reminder of a good weekend.

A Beatrice milestone )

And, finally, my photos arrived back this morning so I have a new set to add to my albums.
lathany: (Default)
I have now been formally granted leave from work for another four years after my maternity leave ends. So I am off-work until November 28th 2006 on twin-raising duty. This, of course, means twin-raising duty and writing practice. Not that I have done much of the latter recently, but next month I will start revising my novel.

Dan and Kate came over on Saturday for the first time since we had the twins. Kate liked both babies - Ryan was energetic and trying to "go" whilst Bea was quiet and peaceful. I talked Final Fantasy with Dan and then play-by-email games; we discussed his City of Bronze and my Fallen Star games both of which are just starting nowish. We also generally chatted about news and people and briefly wondered how Mike and Jez's World Tour was going.

Sunday saw session three of my Athory (Swordsmaster) game. The game is progressing rather well - the politics are working out much closer to my original vision of them than is sometimes the case (I still have nightmares about Witchcraft). Also the next session is only a month away - rather than the usual 6-10 weeks so the players may even remember what has been happening in the meantime ! However I feel that, when Athory is over (although this is months, possibly years, away) I will give Swordsmaster a break and do something different. Certainly the Lathany/Athory world will be put on hold.

The twins seem healthy, happy and energetic. Everyone who has seen them recently says "They've got much bigger, haven't they ?". Can't say that I've noticed, but then I do see them every day. What I am noticing is how much I look forward to days and weekends without them...

(remembers that she has just signed up for four more years of this)
