I went to the Final Fantasy concert in the Royal Albert Hall last night with the usual suspects (Chris V, Krys, Martin, Chris F). Sunday night is where it landed after rescheduling. One surprising thing - it's the first time I've seen a longer queue for the men's toilets than the women's (they've restructured).

The concert itself was excellent. It was the FFVII relaunch event and, much to my surprise, was actually entirely FFVII music (in the past, even when a concert has been marked as an anniversary of a specific game, the second half has generally been a mixture across the series). I loved this as it's my favourite game and my favourite music. One small disappointment - the screen was partially blocked by what I assume is covid-related air circulators above the orchestra (you can see them in the photo).

I can't remember everything that they played but it was almost all from the first Midgar section as that's where the relaunch game is set. I particularly liked the fight music, the main theme and the trains graveyard. I was disappointed with the remake of the Turks theme though - it was nothing like the original and I'm fond of the original. And, of course, they finished on One Winged Angel, after trolling the audience with Aerith's/Aeris' theme (well, for delighted versions of trolling).

I left promptly for my train and it was still horrific. I eventually got home at a quarter to midnight.

As ever, the usual suspects (Martin, Chris V, Chris F, Krys and me) gathered for the Final Fantasy music concert: Distant Worlds (my fourth as for everyone but Krys who wasn't at 2012).

We met, as usual, At Ask by Gloucester Road tube and, after food, headed over to the Royal Albert Hall.

I think that the songs and order of play were something like this:

FF various (including FFVII) - Title theme
FFVII - "Victory Theme" (nine seconds!)
FFXV - ? Apocalypsis Noctis?
FFXIV - "Dragonsong"
FFXV - ? Somnus?
FFXIV - "Answers"
FFIX - "Festival of the Hunt"
FFVI - "Dancing Mad"
FFX - "Suteki Da Ne" (Tidus/Yuna song)

(I'm not at all sure about the FFXV songs, but those are the two I've found mention of on line.)

In the interval Martin and I went off to purchased ice cream and water.

The second half was all FFVII until the last two - post-end songs.

FFVII (remake) - Trailer
FFVII - "Opening / Bombing Mission"
FFVII/Advent Children - "JENOVA Complete"
FFVII - "Main Theme of Final Fantasy VII"
FFVII - "Aerith's Theme"
FFVII - "Cosmo Canyon"
FFVII - "Chocobo theme"
FFVII - "One-Winged Angel"
FFVII - "JENOVA"

Main FF theme

FFX - "Zanarkand"
FFV: Fighting music (it might have been "Clash on the Big Bridge")

It was a good night for me as I'm a huge FFVII fan. I enjoyed all the second half, with particular mention to the Main Theme, Bombing Mission and JENOVA. I have hopes that one day they'll play "Temple of the Ancients"; it's a bit obscure, but occasionally they do play little runs of the less know pieces in sets of three (they didn't do it this time, but did in 2017). From the first half, I particularly enjoyed Dragonsong, the Title theme and Festival of the Hunt. I did wonder, though, whether there were any fans from FFVIII out there (not to mention FFXIII, FFIV and FFXII, although FFVIII is the biggest hit of that lot) as they didn't have a single piece of music from it (I think, for the first time).

Overall, an excellent event.

My second FFXIV character has found her first two pets. I still think it's difficult to choose between them.

This is the wolf pup.

And this is the kitten.

A fairly quiet work day and then some Final Fantasy XIV in the evening with Chris F, Alistair and John.

We did a couple of optional dungeons and then ten levels of Palace of the Dead.

This is one of the more interesting screenshots I took.

At the moment I'm sort-of replaying games. Plus playing the on-line Final Fantasy (XIV) with ao_lai, chrisvenus and Alistair.

The first is Syberia II. I'm playing this because I've just finished replaying Syberia (I) and want to remind myself of the story before I play Syberia III. (III came out this year and I bought it in the summer sale).

Here's a rather unexciting screenshot - I'm only at the start of the game.

As for FFXIV, I'm pretty near the start for that. However, I won't be playing next week, so I'm doing some solo catch-up.

Here's a dubious mage I met on my travels.

There there's Secret World Legends; it's the relaunch of The Secret World. I'm playing the current event - The Whispering Tide. This involves killing the Bird of the Zero-Point Pathogen, aka Flappy.

That's been my week!

This is Carter - chosen for me by [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and the twins.

Carter_forLJ

She's named after a The Secret World character.

Today has been a good day. Christmas dinner all came together as hoped, I've been playing my new Final Fantasy CD of battle music (with thanks to [livejournal.com profile] quisalan) and I've been for a walk. I'm a bit headachey now - but it was worth the cocktails.

Last night I saw Distant Worlds at the Royal Albert Hall. It was a great night, although fewer people were in costume than when I was there two years ago.

I think that the songs and order of play were something like this:

FFX - "Hymn Of The Fayth"
FFVII - "One-Winged Angel"
FFXIII-LR - "Lightning Returns"
FFV - "Dear Friends"
FFIX - "Vamo' alla Flamenco"
FFVII - "Main Theme of Final Fantasy VII"
FFX - "Zanarkand"
FFXI - Ronfaure theme
FFXIV - "Answers"
FF Fight compilation - "Clash on the Big Bridge" (V) / "Those Who Fight (Let the Battles Begin)" (VII) / ? (Mayby "Run!" (IX))

FFVIII - "The Man With The Machine Gun"
FFIX - "Rose of May"
Another compilation - / / FFX - Seymour fight (can't remember which one)
FFVI - "Balance Is Restored"
FFVI - Character themes Terra/Kefka/Celeste/Locke
FFVI - "Dark World"
Main FF theme
FFVI - "Dancing Mad"
Chocobo theme

(I'll update if any of the people I went with have things to add ([livejournal.com profile] chrisvenus, [livejournal.com profile] quisalan, [livejournal.com profile] ao_lai and [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy).

Highlights were [livejournal.com profile] quisalan recognising "Dear Friends" without knowing why (it was a track I used in Meteor), the main theme from FFVII which I absolutely love, "Hymn Of The Fayth" (with choir), the FFVI character themes (it's years since I played, but they brought it all back to me) and the fight compilation.

Half-term has been peaceful as the duo are in Royston and Cambridge (due back today). However, it has also been busy. Friday night, following a quick dinner of rather fine Hawaiian pancakes at My Old Dutch with [livejournal.com profile] ao_lai, I went to the Distant Worlds concert at the Royal Albert Hall with [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy, [livejournal.com profile] chrisvenus and [livejournal.com profile] ao_lai.

Much Final Fantasy Music )

Since I last posted, I completed The Blackwell Deception, which is the fourth in the Blackwell series from Wadjet Eye Games. The Blackwell series are point-and-click games about helping ghosts that fall more into the "mystery" category than "horror". They are good for a number of reasons - decent puzzles (without silly object combinations), complex characters and interesting stories. I played the first three games at the start of this year, found the first two good, but on the short side and then really enjoyed the third. This fourth game is of a decent length (like the third one) and a rather interesting plot. There are plenty of ghosts to help, as well as some advance of the grand plot which has been going since the start (or, strictly speaking, since the second game). I really enjoyed Deception and was smug when I completed it without having to refer to a walkthrough. Recommended to anyone who likes point-and-clicks.

Now that LoveFilms have a reached an agreement with Universal Pictures, we finally got to hire and watch Kick-Ass. I was surprised and pleased to see it lived up to all its hype. Great film, lovely action sequences and a good cast - in particular there was a wonderful performance from Chloë Grace Moretz as Hit-Girl.

With the duo away, [livejournal.com profile] huggyrei and [livejournal.com profile] telpher came over yesterday to play Magic. I didn't enjoy it as much this year as I have done previously. Mainly because I had an unusually high number of bad draws when I had all lands or none ([livejournal.com profile] telpher similarly suffered). While the game sometimes goes that way, I only play once a year and so really noticed it. The set itself was fine (Pack rats was banned), although both [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and [livejournal.com profile] telpher had difficulty putting a playable deck together due to the guilds (which use five of the ten colour pairs).

Today I've been thinking about various family birthdays and Christmas shopping. I like this time of year, particularly when I don't leave all the shopping to the last minute.

Note: Updated to reflect further information about the concert

It appears that Our Shirley is back. Only this time she's a Mormon called Tabitha. ([livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy's Dogs in the Vineyard campaign.)

Yesterday, during a pause in the finale of [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy's Final Fantasy Tribute Game, we were pottering around You Tube and found this.

Vincent and Yuffie is pretty good too.

It's the TIGJam weekend, so [livejournal.com profile] bateleur is in Cambridge. This means that, because I'm a bit of a wuse about sleeping on my own, Reeve was invited into the bedroom. Despite my concerns that I'd be woken up at some unearthly hour (like 6:30 - the weekday get-up time), Reeve was very well-behaved. He settled down on the other side of the bed and didn't once wake me (he might be ruder about me - I got up several times in the night). The absence of [livejournal.com profile] bateleur has also meant I'm on my own with problems - my black necklace has broken (but might be fixable), the downstairs boiler has broken and Ryan is ill.

Another consequence is that I've spent the last couple of evenings re-watching Heroes season 4 (my first rewatch - I've just seen Hysterical Blindness).

Cut for spoilers, including comments on deleted scenes )

What else?
  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves - I'm not sure whether to describe this as a computer game or an interactive movie. A mix of First Person Shooter and some very easy Tomb Raider puzzle sequences. It's very pretty (awesome water effects), hard work for us non-FPS people, but mostly worth it for Claudia Black (Aeryn Sun of Farscape) and Steve Valentine (Alistair of Dragon Age Origins) playing the voices of Chloe Frazer and Harry Flynn. Oh, and maybe for a bit of the game play as well.
  • Salt - Probably best described as a female Bourne/Bond. The story's not bad and Jolie is good in the title role, but ultimately not likely to be my film of the year because the plot isn't brilliant (and, despite some better reasoning, the bad guys still hit that "because we're evil" button).
  • Woking Festival of Dance - My experiences of Woking are that it's easy to find and horrific to navigate around either by car or on foot. We got there in the end; Bea danced and was disappointed not to make the top three (actually top four - they told the boy he got fourth). However, there were seven dancers and she's the youngest in that category. She scored a respectable 81 (we got the score sheet on Friday). And I might take her again, given enough time to get over the panic of this one.
  • Meteor - The two parties have finally gone off in different directions, so this may be the end of [livejournal.com profile] bateleur's two characters visiting the same places. The parties are also carving rather different roles for themselves with very different attitudes to the gods - although I think the most hated god is the same in both parties.
I’m also continuing with Recettear (I’m in the Obsidian Tower and have more heroes) and I may have a crack at continuing with Crisis Core later on today; I've already had the whole Nibelheim Reactor sequence so I reckon I'm near the end.

The GameFAQs "game of the decade" finished today (early this morning); you may remember me blogging about it back in September. The winner was Zelda: Majora's Mask which I've never played. I had a smallish sulk that Final Fantasy X didn't win, but was very pleased with my ability to predict winners otherwise - I came in the 93 percentile of the contest. In terms of the games I nominated, FFX was knocked out in the semis (by Z:MM), Portal made it to the last 16 (knocked out by Resident Evil 4) and nothing else made much of a showing.

We're almost ready for Xmas and the twins are more than ready. Bea even tidied the lounge the moment I suggested it needed doing (although Ryan hasn't done his bit yet). It helps that she's mostly recovered from yesterday's plague (although [livejournal.com profile] bateleur is still under the weather and I have a headache).

Today is the last day of my fortnight holiday as I'm back in the office tomorrow. It's been an excellent two weeks as I've managed to do pretty much everything I wanted, both in terms of household chores and in terms of Enjoyable Stuff. I started the fortnight feeling sleepy and wanting a rest; although I was also keen to get out and do the things that are difficult to arrange with the duo around. The days went like this:

Days )

It's going to be odd to be back at work tomorrow (not to mention tiring - I haven't been up before nine lately). However, I really feel that I've had a great fortnight and have managed to do everything I felt I should do along with lots of things I wanted to do. Ah well, next big stop will be Xmas! At least I still have much Farscape (I'm about a quarter of the way through season two) and Star Ocean (I'm mining copper) to keep me happy.

Of interest only to a few of you - I've completed Dirge of Cerberus. This is something of an achievement for me as I'm not a First-Person Shooter player by any means.

I found I enjoyed it and it stuck reasonably well to the spirit of Final Fantasy VII. It was nice to see all the original party members too (Advent Children style), although some appearances were extremely brief. The plot was OK, the system was playable and the boss fights were varied. I also liked the small bit in which I played someone else.

At some point, I need to do some gardening. This has been the first Sunday in a while I've been in and it's been warm enough (and not raining). However, I suspect I'm going to leave it for a bit longer and do some game notes instead.

Not much has happened over the last week, but a couple of things spring to mind as entry-worthy:
  • Buried Fire (very mild spoilers) - I read this in a couple of days. It's by Jonathan Stroud (Bartimaeus Trilogy) and it got reasonable reviews on Amazon. It's a one concept book really, but the idea is played out nicely and he's consequently written a shortish book rather than padding the whole thing out further. The protagonists are interesting as I found it hard to empathise greatly with any of them (there are two main ones, but it's also written from other viewpoint), but still cared about what would happen to them. I prefer his Bartimaeus stuff, but this wasn't bad.
  • Final Fantasy Tribute Game - After a several month hiatus, we got back to the business of plotting Shirley's death Saving the World Saving the World from Shirley. Unfortunately we still had problems with the whole question of How. So... we did what any players would do in same situation and started playing around with the items we had so far (lumps of paradox). And asking all the NPCs for guidance again (useless bunch). In the end we left the hard part of the question in favour of solving the easier one; grabbed Shirley and pulled her out of the major time stream. Which means that we are now able to kill her. We think. OK, time has collapsed in her absence, but that's an issue I'm sure we can suss now we've got the big stuff sorted.
In other news, we are in the process of watching the fourth season (or fourth season, part 1) of Battlestar Galactica - when we're done (we have four episodes left of the eleven), I'll write a review.

A pot

I assume that the pot has some sort of gift in it.

I have now finished cleaning the kitchen thoroughly. I wanted to do that before all the Christmas cooking started as it really did need it. It'll probably need it again after Christmas is over - but I'll deal with that when it comes.

I usually play an old game on the lead-up to Xmas. Two years ago it was Diablo II. Last year I'm more hazy about, but I think it was Baldur's Gate II. This year it's Final Fantasy VII on the PS3. It's still a really beautiful game, despite being over a decade old, because of all the hand-drawn scenes which have never - in my opinion - quite been equalled by the more recent FFs. I've got to the end of disc one and the final scene still makes me cry. That said, finding Seto also still makes me cry.
lathany: (Default)
Various bits and pieces )In other news, I've been playing too much Pathologic (as mentioned a few days ago). I'm starting to think it's my reaction to having Pokemon on my DS.
lathany: (Default)
It feels wrong to be rude about a Final Fantasy game but this one deserves it. Having finished it last night I was left disappointed by the overall experience.

There were some good things; I thought that the Hunts were an excellent idea, the scenery was pretty and some of the fights were pretty interesting (Demon Wall - for example). However it was well below standard in many other ways. I found the characters dull, the character development practically non-existent and the main character in particular began and remained as just some guy. Balthier was all right, I guess, but he was pretty much the only one.

The plot was linear and lacking in suspense. It quite evidently wanted to be Star Wars (a random quote from the end was "He's our only hope") and the Strahl was clearly the Millennium Falcon in disguise. A couple of times it looked like the Judges were going to go all interesting... but they didn't. There was no mystery to it and it was difficult to care about the good guys or hate the bad ones. Plus it's much too long - I mean the core game is much too long (side stuff can be as long as you please). Oh, and the music was unremarkable (I think that only Lowtown stood out for me at all).

A bit more detail with medium spoilers and comparisons to earlier FFs )

All in all, it's not that bad a game. Had it been recommended to me with a different title (making it comparable with Wild Arms 3 or Star Ocean 3) then I would have been pleased with it and recommended it. Unfortunately, I expect far more from the FF label than that.

I expected FFXII to be my favourite game of 2007. It isn't. Shadow Hearts II was better, Dreamfall was better and we're only in May. But... if you don't have specific expectations of anything called Final Fantasy and want a roleplaying game you'll probably enjoy it.

Yesterday was another installment of [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy's Final Fantasy Tribute Game.

We're now a long way through. )

So with the last of the Big Bads gone, we're probably into the last few sessions.
