Jubilee Weekend
Jun. 6th, 2022 08:15 pmLast week, well the three days I was working, was unexpectedly hectic. Mostly because the majority of my team were away so I picked up tasks that wouldn't usually fall to me. So it was a relief to get to the Jubilee weekend.
It's been quiet, relaxing and very welcome. Bea and I did excellent milkshakes on Thursday and then rather less good ones with Dom and Ryan on Saturday (same place, but different server and I think she was rather new and less good at adding enough flavouring). There have been various walks and a lot of bunting seen.
I've finally finished Kentucky Route Zero just over a year after I started playing it. It's only about ten hours of gameplay, but it's very intense (a separate post about that to come). I've also played a fair bit of Monster Hunter World (dual blades) and generally lazed around. Peaceful times.

Things over the last week or so
Feb. 7th, 2022 06:06 pm- Sunday 30th I met Liz at Kew, seeing her in person for the first time in two years.
- Errant ran yesterday and it now occurs to me that we should really check back in with the dig site.
- I've been playing a lot of Phoenix Point but, wuss that I am, on a nice safe difficulty level.
- I'm now on Spotify and was delighted to find the Secret World soundtrack on it.

Some bits and pieces
Jun. 27th, 2021 08:35 pmThings over the last few days:
- Bea and I visited the new coffee shop which turns out to do great smoothies and excellent milkshakes (I wasn't in the mood for a coffee).
- We played the second scenario of the Detective game. Still good, and more complicated than the first scenario. It's really halfway to being a roleplaying game/story.
- I'm putting together bits for a possible job application.
- I'm back playing Secret World Legends.

Various bits and pieces
May. 17th, 2020 08:25 pmVarious things from the last few days:
- I told work that I was planning to make spag bol on Friday evening. A said she'd looked up the recipe, wondering what sort of exotic thing it was and then realised. "Doesn't say much for my Italian roots," she commented ruefully.
- In Monster Hunter World, for the first time I played for an hour or so without Mr Fox as I had some catch-up to do. Half-way through his Palico (NPC sidekick) turned up to help me. And talked to my Palico about how great his Monster Hunter was.
- Bea and I tried nail varnish from A-England (with thanks to Antonia). Hers is purple and mine is blue. So far the colour is lovely, but both needed multiple coats.
- I've proof-read nine short stories this weekend (three of them mine) as my writers' group is going to print them in a book.
- Dark Fall: Ghost Vigil is rather good, and I plan to write a review now I've finished it. It's an indie game involving ghost gadgets, general creepiness and an OK plot/concept.
- XCom Chimera Squad is both rather different from standard XCom and rather awesome.

Today I wrapped almost all the remaining presents. I finally put marzipan and icing on the Christmas cake. Plus we went for a walk in the nearby park.
And I got to see a familiar face from a computer game of long ago.

This is Nigel Danvers, protagonist of The Lost Crown. The sequel has been due out for nearly a decade. This isn't quite it - it's the first section of a mini-game that he's also worked on (called Silent Night), but it's good to see, all the same.
The advent window was a snowman. Actually Xmassy!

Escape Room, Kew and Goetia
Feb. 18th, 2018 09:00 pmLast Monday I joined colleagues from work at HintHunt near Euston station for an hour long escape room. They have two rooms and the premise of my one was: "A crime scene investigation where a private detective (JM) has found a dead body in his office and he has been wrongly accused of murder. The police have sealed off the office and you have managed to gain access to the crime scene. You only have one hour to find the evidence and clues to wind up with case, prove JM’s innocence and find your way out of the locked room!"
I thought that the game was an excellent way to spend an hour. We did manage to escape with 1 minute and 37 seconds to go, although we needed hints galore (although, apparently, so does everyone else). Thoroughly recommended and, one day, I'll try the other room.
It being half-term, I took a couple of days off - Wednesday and Friday. On Wednesday I mainly used it to relax and enjoy not having to commute or work. On Friday I took the family off to Kew for the day.
We saw this year's Orchid display which, despite this photo not showing people, was very crowded.

The weather was lovely and sunny and the gardens looked beautiful.

We also saw some peacocks on our travels.

On Friday evening, we did pancakes (
bateleur was out on Tuesday evening). Savoury ones with bolognese sauce and then sweet ones. My favourite was my last which I did with chocolate-and-caramel spread, a touch of maple syrup and some brandy.
Also on Friday, I started playing Goetia, a ghost game that I finished today.

It's an interesting puzzle game, although with a somewhat gloomy atmosphere. If and when my GameFAQs review is published, I'll link to that from here.

Lurgy / Boy hiding in the snow
Dec. 17th, 2017 09:12 pmPerhaps unsurprisingly, I've caught one of the lurgies going around. I've felt a little too cold all day, somewhat depressed and a bit fragile.
However, I have finally finished the Christmas cards (I think) and done the last load of school washing this year (I hope).
Also, I've played a fair amount of Steamworld Heist and briefly popped in to the season event of Secret World Legends. I picked up a pet in the latter - it's not very cute.

It was a rare in the original game.

Secret World Legends / Bird in a Cage
Dec. 9th, 2017 10:07 pmI'm continuing to make my way slowly through Secret World Legends (the relaunched The Secret World). I'm now in Transylvania. Consequently, I've met one of my favourite quests again where the character becomes a dead monk with a different power set.

It's still a great quest. And the new version gives you an owl pet as a reward.

In other news - the blackberry and I had another fight. I may have won that battle, but I think it's winning the war.

I recently finished The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin. It's an interesting book with quite a lot of maths/physics background (the three-body problem) and a decent sci-fi plot. I didn't like the ending very much - it felt a bit unfinished - but probably only to me.
Outside the front garden has some small yellow flowers in bloom. Out the back is this.

I think it's the first year that the garden has been clear enough for me to see these.
100 Secrets ran last weekend - the start of season 3 and a five-person party for the first time. We are all off to Sarenland to find out who is in charge and, in Neddra's case, to investigate portals. So far, we've found a population that has been lied to. And possibly a prince.
I finished Warhammer 40K season 2 yesterday. This involved a war beginning on Alanius Eyrie between the Tyranids and the forces of Tzeentch. Oh, and the humans. However, the parties managed to save the planet from destruction in time for the Saint to arrive to protect it.
I've started an Illuminati character in The Secret World. To date I've reached level 2, completed Into Darkness and seen the bad necklace competition (below).

We've finally got around to watching The Killing 3. Perhaps the best of the three in terms of plot, but also by far the most depressing. Also, I gather, deliberately the last.
