(no subject)
May. 3rd, 2023 05:44 pmI've had a cold for the last couple of days. So I logged into work this morning (I was on leave yesterday) feeling a bit sniffy, a bit sleepy (our smoke alarm's battery ran low last night) and altogether sorry for myself.
I discovered that one of my colleagues had lost her father over the weekend after a long illness (she's been off a great deal over the last month to support him and the family). I was also told that another of my colleagues was involved in a road accident and was currently paralysed on his right side and awaiting urgent surgery. We're talking tomorrow as a team about sending something appropriate to each of them.
I stopped feeling sorry for myself.

Xmas afternoon
Dec. 4th, 2021 07:13 pmI hadn't expected to make more than the meal on Friday which was our team Xmas lunch/afternoon. I had to go to an important meeting in the afternoon. Except... it was cancelled. So, feeling like an escaped toddler about to be recalled, I headed out.
The meal was the Xmas menu at the Nags Head in Covent Garden. Chosen in part because it had vegan options for each of the three courses. I had the brie, the turkey and the tiramisu. All very good. And I could drink as I wasn't going back to the office.

We then headed off to our Escape Rooms. Mine, for copyright reasons, was called "Blackwing's cave" and was superhero themed. Also, we started off in darkness. It was pretty good and I really enjoyed being there. After that I headed home as I was exhausted from an otherwise horrendous week.

A farewell I admire
Jan. 28th, 2021 07:44 pmA friend of mine from my previous role left the civil service today. Her leaving email made me smile, so I thought I'd share it. Also - all leaving gift vouchers should be spent this way.

Dear all
Well I can finally say I am going after what must have been the longest notice period know to man or woman.
I have really enjoyed my time at OME. A fascinating role with the AFPRB. I have been on some amazing visits to military bases, wearing inappropriate, but if I might be so bold, stunning shoes. I have managed to navigate my way around Navy war ships and speed boats, a tank and a medical RAF transport plane in these shoes, no mean feat (feet). All very exciting. I have worked with some lovely people (and Neil). I’ve enjoyed doughnut Fridays with Anne (who I am going to miss terribly). I hope to be allowed pop back in to say a proper farewell as and when we can all meet up face to face.
So, thank you all for your kind works in my leaving card, I am not 60 despite Neil’s comments!! I am really very touched. I will spend my voucher on something beautifully impractical.
Best wishes to you all

Christmas Tree
Dec. 24th, 2020 07:31 pmThe final window today was a Christmas Tree.
I was working today for the first Christmas Eve in years (and possibly decades). We wanted some cover and I wasn't planning to travel (actually, probably no-one else did in the end, but hey). I worked a short day; it was wonderfully quiet (only two emails actually sent by a person also working) and no meetings at all. I got things done. And I revelled in the lack of emergencies.

Not a birdhouse
Nov. 26th, 2020 09:46 pmToday was the team Xmas social. The nearer object is what
bateleur did in 15 minutes.

The one at the back is my effort. I forgot to take a final picture when the colour was added. Also, not a birdhouse.

Three days down, two to go. Work has been hectic as people are off on leave, but there are a lot of requests flying around. I'm looking forward to the weekend. Admittedly, it's been a memorable week with Reeve catching a bird for only about the third time in ten years. Ryan was able to let it out to fly away, so hopefully it will be OK.
Friday - work drinks
Jun. 8th, 2020 08:20 amOn Friday we had a team drinks. Where each of my G7 colleagues did a round. I did the movie round that Dom created (scores ranged from 1 out of 12 to 12 out of 12). I came third (out of ten) in the yoga round - 24 questions on yoga (I don't do yoga, but it was multiple choice) and joint third in the scavenager hunt. I suck at Disney film songs though.
Career Breaks to take
Mar. 29th, 2020 11:07 amHere's a story that made me smile on Friday.
One of my colleagues has been on a six month career break in San Francisco. He headed off in November and was really cagey about what he planned to do whilst he was away. He came back this month (for the C reason) and popped up in our team meeting and finally told us.
He was in circus school! He's been learning juggling and acrobatics (he missed out on clowns as apparently those classes started in September). He's now coming back to a job elsewhere (we're not very surprised, he's been in our team for seven years) - but it was a great reason to be away.
