Reading time
Dec. 28th, 2010 08:14 pmThis evening, for the first time in more than a week, Bea got her story. We read to her (and Ryan) any evening when they are ready for bed in good time. However, Christmassy stuff has pushed back bedtime and story time hasn't happened since the festive period really got under way. So, after much whinging yesterday, I decided to make it happen this evening barring major problems.
And it did. I read them roughly two-thirds of a chapter of The Ogre Downstairs. Bea is loving it.

Presents and food and roleplayimg
Dec. 25th, 2010 03:33 pmThe duo got up at 5am to open the presents in their stockings. This consisted of four edibles (always appreciated!) and six non-edibles each of which Bea's charm bracelet (metal/plastic mix) and Ryan's car were a huge hit. However, I need to get them bigger stockings next year.
bateleur and I got up at the more sensible time of 9:30am and we all had fruit salad and yoghurt for breakfast. Then a phone call from an old friend and some necessary caffeine, followed by the eagerly anticipated tree presents. My own hoard was:
bateleur in a) grumpy sack boy (LittleBigPlanet) courtesy of
chrisvenus earlier in the month.
Christmas dinner was awesome. Everything cooked just right (chicken, bacon, sausage, roast potatoes, roast parsnip, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, stuffing and gravy). It helped that we were only cooking for the four of us. We set the table fully for once (napkins, deep red candles, wine glasses all round and crackers) which the duo loved. However, there will be alongish short pause before we worry about the pudding.
In other news - our cat may be a fake feline - he didn't spend the end of the cooking time trying to run off with the chicken.

bateleur
- Dark Heresy from

Dec. 24th, 2010 12:11 pmThe GameFAQs "game of the decade" finished today (early this morning); you may remember me blogging about it back in September. The winner was Zelda: Majora's Mask which I've never played. I had a smallish sulk that Final Fantasy X didn't win, but was very pleased with my ability to predict winners otherwise - I came in the 93 percentile of the contest. In terms of the games I nominated, FFX was knocked out in the semis (by Z:MM), Portal made it to the last 16 (knocked out by Resident Evil 4) and nothing else made much of a showing.
We're almost ready for Xmas and the twins are more than ready. Bea even tidied the lounge the moment I suggested it needed doing (although Ryan hasn't done his bit yet). It helps that she's mostly recovered from yesterday's plague (although
bateleur is still under the weather and I have a headache).

Dec. 20th, 2010 03:03 pmToday I cooked a Cappuccino Cake from an "easy" recipe that I found on the internet. I'm impressed with the resulting cake - it actually looks like its picture. I'm hoping it tastes OK too. The occasion is
bateleur's birthday - he wanted a coffee cake and I gave him four recipes that I'd found to choose from.

A rocking donkey
Dec. 18th, 2010 08:18 pmToday has been full of housework. My parents-in-law are arriving tomorrow so I have done a washing load, cleaned both bathrooms, helped Bea with her Xmas cards and made Pink Dolly Pasta with Ryan.
Today has also been full of snow - much to Reeve's annoyance. But then I'd be upset too if it snowed in my toilet.
I finished The Red House Mystery by A A Milne yesterday on the train. I really liked it. Additionally, it reminded me of Agatha Christie in all sorts of ways. It was the same sort of upper-class killing and there was an amateur detective on the scene to solve the crime. However, whilst the "Queen of Crime" tended to have half-a-dozen people with motives, this concentrated on the details of the crime and very few characters. Now I've finished it, I'm sorry to discover that it was the only mystery novel he wrote.

Dec. 17th, 2010 06:52 pmToday was spent refusing free food and drink at stations. Ashford station was offering coffee and croissant. Trouble was, I didn't have much spare time before my train showed up (and had eaten breakfast). Waterloo station this evening was offering whiskey (as a promotion). I'm not that big a whiskey drinker, so again I declined.

Dec. 14th, 2010 07:27 pmToday the conversation turned to cat genetics and the extent to which cats look like their parents. I thought of
lanfykins and some of the things she'd said on the subject.

Dec. 13th, 2010 09:46 pmWalking from the office to St James Tube I saw nine police vans. It's just under a five minute walk so felt like a huge a huge number of police. It's close to New Scotland Yard, though, which I guess is some of the reason.
I'm re-reading Harry Potter again as a sort of pre-Xmas easy reading on the train thing. Except, it's hard to judge how long the whole set will take and I'm nearly through book seven, but still have a good week to go. So I'm going to try The Red House Mystery by the Pooh author when Hallows ends.

Dec. 12th, 2010 08:11 pmToday was a day of jobs. I put on the school uniform washload (Ryan's jumper is on the radiator so that it dries in time for tomorrow), did my ironing, cooked Shepherd's Pie with Bea and did all the sewing jobs I had lined up (the torn net curtains in the lounge, a button on my black coat and the waist on my reindeer pyjamas).
I also watched
lanfykins play Little Big Planet with Bea/Dom which concluded with a frying pan demonstration.

Two children skiing
Dec. 9th, 2010 10:04 pmThis lunchtime I met up with someone I used to work with for lunch (chicken and mustard baguette with a latte). This evening I met up with two people I worked with 'til recently for drinks and dinner (half a bottle of Pinot Grigio, third of a bottle of Shiraz and a four seasons pizza). I am now happy and tipsy. And it's the work Xmas party tomorrow - I timed this wrong.

Dec. 8th, 2010 07:57 pmDespite previously being awful, St James post office was speedy service this morning. I think it helped that I dodged lunchtime as well as the pension collection at the start of the week.
Oxford Circus was pretty crowded, but again, I think I went early enough to dodge the crowds. I now have all the non-edible presents for the duo.

Dec. 7th, 2010 07:58 pmToday was the meeting closest to Xmas, so the working lunch included turkey, little fig tartlets, small sausages and mince pies. It made a pleasant change.
Even better, that was my last big meeting of the year. Plus I have two lunchs, the office Xmas do and evening drinks with former colleagues between now and Christmas. December's looking pretty good.

Dec. 6th, 2010 09:45 pmThere's Xmas music in the shops and Christmas trees in the stations. Sadly the Christmas trees are the same as last year's - only decorated with blue lights. I find blue lights rather un-Christmassy and, in this weather, they look cold. I suppose I ought to applaud the stations for saving money - but they are still naff trees.
I wonder if there will be a work tree this year or if it will be a casualty of the cuts.

Dec. 5th, 2010 09:38 pmToday was the Meteor session at which Bea got to try out her new dice and the combat system was seriously tested (note to self: must polish the combat system).
The party are still alive and well but at odds about the limits of their moral duties. Also, they have categorised their characters into paladin, rogue and sorcerer (plus
bateleur's DPC).
We put the Christmas decorations up before the session - so the tree is up and happy (after replacing a light). I cut my hand on some broken glass from a decoration - but that was my own stupid fault (Bea was warning me anxiously to be careful).
Finally, there's a faint glimmer of hope for the cold spell to end this week. The BBC forecast for Ashford hits 6 degrees on Friday (shock, horror!). However, this is the fifth day, which is usually extensively revised, so I mustn't get too hopeful yet.
