Thursday was our last day out and about of the fortnight, in part because of the weekend train strike.

Our main stop was the Victoria and Albert Museum. I forgot my camera - but my phone worked OK.

This is Ryan outside the Japan area.

Bea and Dom considering architecture.

My favourite bit of the jewellery section. It starts in the middle with diamonds, then goes on to rubies and sapphires and so on. I really liked the non-standard colours.

We bought souvenirs for the first and only time - I got a couple of pairs of earings, Bea a Winnie the Pooh badge and bag and Ryan a Kaleidoscope (we, sort of).

We then had lunch at Thai Square which I recommend. Lovely Pad Thai.

April

It's been quite a while since I wrote reviews of anything. So, I'd better fix that.

Also, a quick mention of my Easter week off. I went to Kew with Ryan (plus cake) and to Staines for shopping with Bea (plus waffle and pizza). Both days went very well and we chose the two days with decent weather. I don't have any shopping pictures, but here's a Kew one.

Over Easter Dom, Bea and I went to see Black Panther. I enjoyed it, but wasn't quite as blown away by it as pretty much everyone I've seen reviews from. In part, because my expectations were high and in part because I didn't know the source material. Dom did know the backstory and was much more impressed with how they had dealt with a cliched and racist background without throwing it all away.

I'm reading my way through my birthday books, two down and two to go.
  • Want You Gone by Chris Brookmyre: It's a rather nice Jack story that also deals with Buzzkill and internet hacking. Worth a read, although possibly after the other Buzzkill/Jack stories (Dead Girl Walking and Black Widow).
  • Sixth Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko: The sixth, and possibly last, of the Night Watch series. I thought this was a rather sad ending to a series that started well. Also, I do wish that the author would stop bringing people back from the dead and put more effort into creating new characters. Overall, not very impressed.

There have also been a couple of games.
  • Wasteworld: This was a new roleplaying game that Martin wanted to try. It's a post-apocalyptic game in a future controlled by AIs with touches of Paranoia. I think it was an interesting background, but would like to see more before saying much about the system.
  • Earthforce: Dom ran the first session of his superheroes one-off series. This featured John, Jon, David and Georgia. I really enjoyed it, but won't say much more as others will be playing.

So, overall, April's not been a bad month, although it definitely picked up when the weather improved.

Bea and I have a tradition. That at some point in the school summer holiday when I'm on leave, I take her out for cake, shopping and pizza. This year we went on Wednesday - which was rather rainy, but otherwise OK.

We started at St Pauls where I took her to a branch of Bea's of Bloomsbury, chosen for the name. Bea was delighted, the staff were friendly and the cake was good (I had the pistachio and chocolate cupcake and she had a nutella baked doughnut).

We then pottered around One New Change and bought a few bits and pieces (Bea got a necklace, a t-shirt and some footsies and I got some butterfly socks). From there we headed to Oxford Street which worked out better (Bea got a top and some leggings and I got a top). Finally we went to Pizza Express, as usual and got dough balls and pizza. I bought Bea an A4 notebook from Paperchase in Victoria Station and then we headed home.

Bea day

I took the day off work today to spend some time with Bea as she had an inset day. We went out to Staines for a shopping trip and some lunch.

We usually do this in the summer during the long school holiday and go into central London. However, because of our America trip, we hadn't fitted it in last August. Central London wasn't as appealing in the cold, so we settled on nearby Staines. Fortunately, the temperature, whilst still low, was not the below-freezing level it had been earlier in the week.

The day included:
  • Seeing a hearse drawn by two black horses on the other side of the road when waiting for the bus.
  • Buying a sheep nightdress in M&S.
  • The Body Shop (perfume, hand cream and lip balm).
  • Accessories (scrunchies).
  • Pizza Express.
  • Bea falling over on the way home and bleeding everywhere (for the second time in two days) :-(
  • A visit to the Ashford cake shop.
  • Watching My Neighbour Totoro when we finally returned.
Apart from the falling over, it was a lovely day.

I have spent the last week resting and also dealing with various little bits and pieces that I had been putting off. Such as contacting the tax office, writing a character for [livejournal.com profile] bateleur's 100 Secrets game and ordering a new sofa for the lounge. On Friday, I took Bea shopping in Oxford Street and out for lunch. I don't spend much time with Bea in general (as I am parent who commutes to work in London), so it was a day out for the two of us and it went very well.

The resting part of my week included finishing Ni No Kuni. I've written a long review for GameFAQs, but the shortish version is that it's gorgeous with a decent story and interesting gameplay. However, it's a bit too grindy for my liking. Definitely one of the best JRPGs around though. I particularly liked the plot advancement as you move from one goal to another across the game and understand a great deal about the world in the process. I also liked the side-quests and hunts - they made the grinding less arduous.

I have finished the fourth and fifth Le Carré books and I am now waiting for the sixth to arrive.
  • The Looking Glass War - This was a spy story in, what I suspect is, Le Carré's normal style. I didn't enjoy it very much. It's depressing from start to finish and there is very little Smiley.
  • A Small Town In Germany - This was much better. Still about spies, but much more mystery and "thriller" to it. Still no Smiley, but the protagonist - Alan Turner - was very interesting and relentless.
We have seen a couple of films since Gone - both were recommendations and based in history.
  • A Royal Affair - A Danish film set in the 18th century, at the court of the mentally ill King Christian VII of Denmark. This was a fairly accurate retelling (as far as I can judge) and was well-acted, interesting, unsurprisingly tragic and had some wonderful lines (such as a quotation from Hamlet). I'd recommend it for anyone unless they loathe subtitles. Actually the worst thing about it was the subtitles as there were some white on white moments.
  • Ip Man - This film was much more loosely based on events and is about Ip Man, a Chinese martial artist whose students included Bruce Lee. It's fun and the story is fairly traditional, although in a twentieth century setting. There's no Bruce Lee, though, so don't watch it for him (it's set too early).
There's been a fair amount of roleplaying since I last posted:
  • Folded Edge - Again, there's been a fair amount already said, mainly by [livejournal.com profile] lanfykins (here). We had something of a law-abiding session. We arranged for my would-be assassin to be arrested, took a trip to Danté during which Maravian had some bad piloting draws (although Hex eventually took over and so we didn't fly into the sun) and then went on to Ariel (I think) where we rescued the two remaining hostages of ten from an incredibly grim situation. There are hints that we may eventually be bound for Khepri (the prison planet), but Reagan still has hopes of avoiding this.
  • Lost Souls - As the re-runs are over, I can now talk about this. However, I suspect it's not as funny to read about as it was to play. It was supposed to be - and mostly was - a somewhat dark and depressing tale about the afterlife. We ([livejournal.com profile] wildrogue, [livejournal.com profile] bateleur, Alistair and I - [livejournal.com profile] leathellin bailed at the eleventh hour, possibly wisely) played characters who had died in a train crash and found themselves on The Plains, hoping eventually to be worthy of Heaven. However, when wandering we met an Angel who sent us back to Earth to recover a being that should not be there. Easier said than done. We were ghosting about in 1999, a few days before the solar eclipse, wondering how we were going to find and catch the bad guy given that possessing people was considered A Really Bad Thing (which only bad guys would do). The answer appeared to be given to us when we spotted a possessed seagull above us. We reckoned that (a) this was our bad guy and (b) this solved our problems. Four more seagulls were quickly obtained and possessed, flying was a doddle and so we just needed to make contact - thus we managed a four seagull pileup and a show-down in the seagull brain as we plummeted towards the sea. Of course, the seagull turned out to be possessed by a mere follower and the actual bad guy was in a pregnant woman elsewhere. However, we eventually caught the bad guy - a major sinner/magician from Hell - and three of us returned (we hope that the fourth one gets back eventually). We had made an important step towards redemption. Oh, and in case anyone cares, we did regain control of the seagull and stopped it from drowning.
  • Star Wars - Session three involved light sabers. And a(nother) space battle. Not to mention an unfortunate critical fail and lots of bad rolls from me.
Next week I plan to see at least two museums. And do more lazing about.

Today I have been trying to do as little as possible as I recover from my latest cold. This has meant a bit of Terraria with Ryan and a bit of Awakenings with Bea. And I cleaned the shower, but it needed it.

We've also started wrapping the twins presents and have planned food over Christmas.

Tired now.
lathany: (Ill)
I still have a cold. It's the same cold as the one [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy has, we both started a week ago, and I want it gone right now.

I made some more progress on the Christmas shopping this lunchtime, I'm aware that it's December and I've got more left than usual. I've also started my Christmas cards. I like this time of year - even when I'm panicking about getting it all done in time.
lathany: (Default)
It was the same last year - getting into the supermarket the week leading up to Christmas is a nightmare but today the car park was a third empty. If it carries on being like last year then it won't be a problem to shop again until a week before next Christmas.
lathany: (Housework)
The housework is finished - fortunately all done before they arrived.

Tesco was heaving with people - and still a fair few food shopping days to go.
lathany: (Default)
It's been a good weekend. Yesterday morning [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy took the duo birthday shopping and I tagged along. Ryan got a toy puppy on a lead and a plastic snake. Bea got a Rubic Cube, a Magic 8 ball and a pokemon game.

The day then become [livejournal.com profile] bateleur's horror game (gaining Alistair and TheHattedOne for the party) where we were jurors on a murder trial also involving black magic, a demon from the mines, some very weird house moving (literally) and identity swapping. The game rocked as it combined the murder trial and the horror plot feasibly, whilst giving the players plenty to do. Plus a bunch of rock-hard monk types turned up to rescue the situation when called. [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy helped blow up the demon with explosives and TheHattedOne killed the sorcerer by running him over.

Today included putting up the tree and watching Blade II (although the film mostly sucked). I almost feel ready to face tomorrow's meeting.

Candles

Anyone recommend a good smell of candle (or should that be flavour of candle) that is Christmassy?

Ryan has now picked up enough language to fill the gaps in his favourite songs. However, he doesn't always get it right - hence the pig with hairclips on.

Little things from the last few days:
* What sex is Demogorgon?
* I found my write-ups of the Final Fantasy prequel. They are here and here.
* Last night I watched Final Fantasy: Advent Children for the first time. mild spoilers )
* Due to a late parcel from Marks (and, thus, re-ordering) I have a choice of two swimsuits for Bea (and will then send the other one back). Which of the Stripy Tankini and the Rainbow Halterneck Swimsuit on this page looks better?
* I have just started my first packet of Machu Picchu coffee (first recommended by [livejournal.com profile] smiorgan) - decent (I'm reserving judgment on whether I consider it outstanding until I've drunk a bit more of it) and my sort of mild/medium taste. Ever since [livejournal.com profile] quisalan bought me a present of a set of nine coffees (the Kenyan was my new favourite) I've realised I need to try a few more types and expand my range a bit.
* To treat myself on the way home on Friday I bought some strawberries and asparagus (both of which had to wait until Saturday because [livejournal.com profile] bateleur had already bought tea), a pound's worth of each from the little market under Vauxhall station puts the likes of Tesco to shame.
* Bea and Ryan have each had their third and final egg today (presents from Uncle [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy and Aunty TheHattedOne). Postman Pat and Spiderman. No prizes for guessing who wanted what.
* I now have a new backdrop for the summer months; 'Orchids' courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] leathellin. Up until now I've used the standard 'Autumn' and 'Tulips' pictures each for half the year - now I'll be moving to three pictures each for four months. I think I might plan to eventually go to a picture for every month of the year.
* [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and I have a difference of opinion on what is more stressful - a process that one can affect and a process that one can't. I go for the former (because - if I can make a decision, I can also make the wrong decision) and he for the latter (because - there's nothing he can do about it). Sometimes the difference is difficult to spot though; I tend to stress more than [livejournal.com profile] bateleur in general.

A Tree

Today I finished my Xmas shopping. Whilst out, I succumbed to a couple of things for myself.

The first was new perfume. My current one (Lou Lou) was nearly out and I was determined to get something new and exciting to replace it. As my favourite perfume ever was a Ralph Lauren one (Lauren) I headed over to that counter in John Lewis and tried a few different smells. I now have a 100ml bottle of Romance, which I'm very pleased with.

The second was a dark red cotton top declaring "Born to be..... ...Gorgeous" from Next. [livejournal.com profile] bateleur thinks I've gone backward to my teenage phase (with an added comment that he likes my teenage phase). Given that I didn't really do the teenage thing when I was the appropriate age, I quite like the idea.

I'm thinking of getting myself a mobile phone for when I go back to work (so that I too can announce "I'm on the train!") However, I know next to nothing about how to choose one (I've never bought one before).

My criteria are:

Use : To ring out in emergencies and semi-emergencies. I'm not interested in deals that provide chat time, I have a land line for that (it'll normally be switched off).

Features : Just the whole "phone" thing. I don't care about cameras, ring tones, text messages, games, etc (although, I'm mostly interested in the cheapest option so if it's cheaper to get a phone with them, that's fine). I also want something that would fit in my bag, but frankly anything smaller than a brick works (also I find the really small phones annoying).

Main want : Something cheap.

Any and all advice appreciated!

I've never driven to Staines (alone) before. I've never taken the kids to a shopping centre before. Today I achieved two firsts... mostly because I needed to acquire a new watch battery before my interview (Monday).

It was a very successful visit. We bought a watch battery (and the assistants in Samuels loved the duo - mad fools). We bought some photo albums and, the crowning glory, we got a toffee Thornton's cake (along with requisite chocolatey twin-bribes - magic roundabout chocolate lollies - and a truffle bar each for me and [livejournal.com profile] bateleur) reduced to a mere £1.45. And I was back at the car park ticket machine within the hour.

The afternoon was Ryan's speech therapy session/up-date. At the end of the session she said she would write to his school and get them to give him extra help and have him for group speech therapy sessions again (from when she gets another staff member - they're short staffed at the moment). He's improving, but still behind. The speech therapist was surprised that the hospital hadn't been in touch about his brain scan; which is supposed to be taking place at the Central Middlesex Hospital. As my last (and only) visit to that hospital was after [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy's many hour wait following his motor bike accident, I don't have a high opinion of the place. Although, no-one is really expecting the brain scan to show anything - it's just a precaution.

And as for Beatrice, her story telling is progressing fast and furious. Yesterday I was treated to The Waterman and The Splash. Composed in the bath, if you hadn't guessed.
lathany: (Default)
Today I received an email from Amazon explaining that the book I ordered from them would be another 4-6 weeks. However, this is after... a considerable length of time and an earlier delay. Namely that I originally ordered it on the 4th November (2004) and the original delivery date window was 4th-22nd December. This went back to 28th December - 4th January and today has gone back again.

No, it wasn't supposed to be a Christmas present. It was a birthday present for my father. His birthday is this Friday and I've already let him know that his present will be (v) late (he's personally chosen it, otherwise I would find something else). Fortunately my father is a sweet man and doesn't mind at all.

Today the first (post-Xmas) Mother & Toddler group restarted. I was late and thus missed the painting. I can't say I'm sorry as there'll be some sort of equally messy activity at the other group tomorrow to make up for it. It was good to see everyone again (and a little like being back at school "what did you do over Christmas then?").

Oh, and Beatrice has lost one of her Baby Pom hair slides (although she had plenty of other slides to make up for it).

Robin!

I got one right! I got one right!

Lovely robin. Bad morning.

Let me elaborate. Today was the last day of playgroup before Xmas. Now, despite being the daughter of a teacher, this failed to register. So I actually reached playgroup this morning feeling a bit tired and very wet to discover... that everyone else had bought Xmas presents for the four playgroup organisers.

Jo (who wins my "hero of the hour" award) gave me a lift home having seen me standing outside the door, still dripping and with a wet pushchair. I explained my problem and she suggested I could go and buy presents now. She told me the names of the four (which I knew but wanted confirmed) and so I came home, grabbed an umbrella and set off for Tesco (she offered to drop me at Tesco, but I declined because of the pushchair).

Now, after a frantic forty minutes, I have four wrapped boxes of truffles (Elisabeth Shaw - two Cointreau, two Irish Cream) each topped with a Winnie The Pooh Christmas card addressed to each of them "with love from Ryan and Beatrice and thanks from Dawn and Dom". I'll take them in when I collect the kids at lunchtime.

And I'm exhausted.

Update

The present delivery went down well. And in amusing other news, Ryan won a bottle of wine in the raffle.

I had something of an unpleasant experience shopping in my local Tesco store today and I'm still wondering if I handled it right.

Now, I've always had a big thing about personal space and have never liked the people who move beyond the (cashier) end of the conveyor belt. The ones that particularly annoyed me were the people who stood far enough forward that I couldn't use the signing counter for signing. However, I've never said anything about it.

I will also add how much I hate the new pin machines in Tesco (and everywhere else). I don't feel that they are secure enough and always stoop over them in a protective fashion when typing in my pin. (Yes, I suspect you can already see where this story is going...)

Right, back to today. There were two men behind me in the queue and neither of them were staying back behind the stopping point on the conveyor belt. One of them was wandering back and forth around the aisle (the other cashier point behind me was empty) and the second one was standing right opposite the cashier. I handed over my card, heaved shopping into the pushchair and heard the cashier ask for my pin. I straightened up and looked around meaningfully. This worked, not at all. The one opposite the cashier still was. The other one was now standing directly behind me.

So, I asked them to stand back because I wanted to type in my pin. Needless to say, they were both very offended and rude (although they did actually stand back).

I felt rather guilty about the whole thing for several reasons (even though I keep justifying it).

i. They were both looked the sort of unshaved, unkempt types that television always portrays as the bad guys. (Although, I believe I would have said the same had they been anyone else.)

ii. I probably could have typed the number in without them seeing what it was. (But only probably; with them situated at different angles and both close it would have been difficult.)

iii. I was all but accusing them of trying to steal my pin. (Although, I really couldn't think of a better way of putting it.)

What would you have done? If it happens again, is there any other way of dealing with it? Or am I simply underestimating the security "sides" of the new pin machines?

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and I went into Staines to do a bit of shopping.

Today I must do some of the things I planned for this week. Shelves and picture hooks perhaps. On the other hand I might wuss out and content myself with sorting out their bedroom.
