After several weeks consideration I have finally bought myself a paid account Live Journal as a late Christmas present / New Year present. This means I might upload a few different caricatures to add to my existing one next year.

I decided not to have any New Year's resolutions, just a few cocktails instead. The twins are in bed and there are a couple of hours left before midnight, so plenty of time to drink too much.

Details of 2002, for anyone who could not guess )

What about 2003 ? )

Oh. And Martin is finally on LJ (hooray !).

The twins had their MMR jab on Tuesday morning. Both were very well-behaved (Beatrice smiled as the needle went in). Rob and Georgia came to visit in the afternoon and generally approved of MMR, and of the twins (despite Ryan playing up).

More Rob and Georgia )

Yesterday was my office's Christmas meal. People who leave during the year get invited back for the meal. I was invited back (despite having left over a year ago) because I missed the previous one due to suddenly giving birth and then being in hospital for several weeks.

Being back at work )

Today we take the family (minus the Ems) back to Cambridge. I have a load of packing to do, not to mention vacuuming. Both twins seem exceptionally lively, so I'm hoping they will have exhausted themselves by the time we put them in the car. Then we will be home to babysitting grandparents for a week or so. It will be a chance to see The Two Towers, have meals out and generally make the most of some free time.

Happy Christmas Everyone !

To say that the house looks tidy would be an exaggeration.

However, it is a definite improvement. Dom has put up coat hooks behind the front door and I have sorted the various piles of paper that have lived on the bottom steps. Lounge-wise various stacks of boxes and papers have been sorted and the mantlepiece and bookcase top have been cleaned. We are also going to, finally, get rid of the various big items (printer, rocking chair, baby bouncer seats) which are no longer in use. Given that I am now in the house most of the time, I feel that the downstairs looks better.

Additionally, I have assembled the Christmas tree. Not the five foot high "Ryan tippable" tree, but the two foot tree which can sit on top of the bookcase. OK, it is a token effort - but I like putting up Christmas decorations.

Finally, the Clans story has been taken out of storage and I may even sort it out next year; in between writing other things.

Well, yet again I have no idea where most of my friends live. With the arrival of the twins I have had little opportunity to visit them, and we seem to have lost half the addresses we did have. I foresee another email requesting location information approaching (just as soon as I finish the actual card pile).

Fallen Star stuff - promised to be dull for non-players )

On a completely different note, having read the BBC news site, I agree with [livejournal.com profile] venta. "The Foster Affair" is really, really dull. Whatever happened to proper news stories ?

The weekend marked a much-anticipated holiday, my first this year. (The last holiday was in June 2001, when I fell down the stairs of our holiday home - a grade 1 listed building - the day I found out I was pregnant.)

[livejournal.com profile] bateleur and I drove up to Cambridge and dumped Ryan and Beatrice with their doting grandparents then headed over to Suffolk for a long weekend.

Holiday details with a Kentwell mention )

This morning my life has returned to normal - I have rung the doctor and re-arranged the twins MMR jab for next week and, as I type, the plumber is fixing the pipes to the washing machine. However, after the holiday, it all seems much easier to deal with. Besides, in another nine days, [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and I will be heading back to babysitter (grandparent) land for Christmas.

Mr Harford, prompt as ever, has won the award for "First Christmas Card to arrive at New Workshops". He has consequently beaten other likely competitors such as my Great-Aunt Joan or my friend Caroline who is living in Hong Kong (and usually tries to get ahead of the Christmas post). He has even written (OK, its a pre-printed label) his address on the back of the envelope assuming (correctly) that we do not have it.

As [livejournal.com profile] bateleur has already commented, we have a bit of a plumbing/electrical crisis on at the moment. On the plus side, we do have a plumber and an electrician (and a builder - who hopefully will not be required for this problem) that we like and trust (and who charge reasonably). So I am hoping that kitchen will be back to normal (or perhaps even cleaner) before Christmas. At least everything is still usable; I had nightmare visions of the washing machine breaking (with twins, this can be really, really bad).

Re-reading that last sentence is scary. I can handle being a mother. I can handle being a housewife. So long as I forget that I am both of those things. I have to keep telling myself that I am merely a writer-in-training with child and household chores.

Yesterday saw the clash of the Yu-Gi-Oh! decks. Paul beat me (twice) and I beat Sarah (twice). However, at least some of those matches were won based on how typical the starting hand was (ie. the "wot no monsters ?" problem). My "Labyrinth Wall" deck did quite well, but I'm still not convinced I have the balance of magic cards right. Additionally Paul and I finally concluded the "Cocoon of Evolution" swap, only a few months after first discussing it.

Today, I was busy working on the (late) Fallen Star turn when I realised that Ryan had actually got past the current baby barrier (no wonder it was quiet). A quick investigation revealed him in the bathroom, playing with the bleach. Fortunately, the "child-proof" lid actually was - so there was no harm done.

Ninety chapters, a prologue and an epilogue. I will find out what the word count is again this weekend.

I now need Dom to mark up amendments as he reads it through from start to finish. Once I have corrected those, it will all be over.

Ryan decided to catch a cold for his. And it looks like Beatrice is getting it too. In Ryan's case he can no longer crawl silently around - a wracking cough gives away his location instantly.

The card and present opening will take place this evening when Dom is around to watch. The question is - how long will it take them to open everything (and will dribbling work) ?

This morning, a number of envelopes arrived addressed to Ryan and Beatrice. They are sitting in a small pile waiting for tomorrow - the twins first birthday. Consequently, I have been busy remembering what I was doing a year ago )

Yesterday, Georgia visited bearing gifts (birthday presents for the twins and a "Congratulations on surviving" present for Dom and I). A visit from Georgia )

Ryan has a cold, so has been coughing in an ear-piercing and pathetic fashion (one eye on the adults in the room whilst making this miserable noise). Fortunately, he does not seem to be too bad. Beatrice is her usual happy, smiling self. A letter arrived with all the twins post confirming the diagnosis that the doctor gave us last week - that she does not have cerebral palsy.

In other news, I have managed seventy-five chapters, so am into editing the last quarter of my book. This means that, odd as it sounds, I will soon move onto something new.

Another Swordsmaster session, another attempt on the life of Lord Roland...

More about Roland's lucky escapes )

Ryan and Beatrice, of course, were present for most of the session. Dom built a large Ryan-barricade next to the fridge to give him a large crawl area and let him loose. It seemed to work rather better than the smaller crawl area had during Dom's game. Krys ended up feeding Bea her milk.

My play-by-email game, Fallen Star, has reached day six. Whilst the ship appears to no longer be sailing the rivers of Hell, the PCs reckon that they are still a long way from Norway. The number of people in the infirmary and locked up continues to rise. As does the "missing persons" list.

In real-world news, my editing continues. Sixty-five chapters completed. I should be finished by the end of the year - with luck.

There was alcohol.

And presents for Ryan and Beatrice. Martin brought a truck-load of "big" lego (literally) and Frances brought a mouse with a mobile.

The twins, Ryan in particularly, did their best to take over the evening; but were cotted after a bout of bad behaviour (but not before Ryan had messed up his clean clothes).

We talked about cocktail ingredients, 'cos Dom wanted to know if anyone had any ideas for things which might mix with Aftershock (the cinnamon one). Vanilla Schnapps was suggested and I found it on line (but decided not to buy it until I was sober enough to be making the right decision). We talked about parents - and Martin's plan to do all the things which ours disapprove of. Frances was rather worried when I pointed out that this included getting married.

All in all it was a great evening. Plus, I don't have a hangover (and I really, really should).

The weights for November were :

Beatrice - 20lb 4oz (9.20kg)
Ryan - 19lb 5oz (8.78kg)

Meanwhile, on the story front I have edited 50 chapters - placing me halfway (or just over).

After an earlyish breakfast, the car was heading towards Hounslow. The reason ? Beatrice's physiotherapy appointment with the Hounslow doctor.

We arrived on time and were taken through to see the doctor within five minutes. Dr Lessing asked lots of questions about us and about the twins. Then she measured and weighed Bea whilst checking her reactions and muscle development. Beatrice liked Dr Lessing rather more than the St Peter's trio and obligingly picked up coloured bricks and banged them together.

The verdict ?

That Beatrice is fine. Dr Lessing said that Bea does not have cerebral palsy and that her development is just slower than Ryan's. Bea will still go to physiotherapy, but the worry and urgency is gone.

Ryan, meanwhile, happily hippoed around the doctor's room playing with the toys she provided. He also sicked up on her set of scales and was annoyed when she did not seem to mind. After a hard morning of rampaging, he went to sleep in the car. Consequently, the journey home was accompanied by a set of little snores.

Blocking Ryan off from parts of downstairs is getting harder and harder. Gone are the days when a pile of cushions would thwart him. Now, even a pile of cushions reinforced by a tool box is merely climbable.

My next move was to use a chair to block him. Anything which had a bar at head-height worked. Except, he has now learned to duck.

If nothing else, he should be an expert on assault courses by Christmas.

Beatrice and Ryan have been invited to :

St Peter's Hospital

S.C.B.U. Christmas Reunion Party

At lunchtime on Thursday 5th December.

I suspect the whole Thursday lunchtime thing will mean a no-show. But it was good to be invited.

Monde

After a couple of quiet months, another Monde (Swordsmaster) game finally occurred. The bad news was that we were missing Becky (Sable), the good news was that it was an interesting session.

Monde Business )

Ryan tried to make a strong case for having a babysitter for future sessions by wailing and rampaging almost continually. Beatrice was quiet and smiling. She would have won a 'perfect baby' award if not for the dribbling. Plus I think she tried to eat Corinne's shoe at one point.

And I don't think my hair looks blonde any more, whatever the rest of the players say.

We arrived at the baby clinic just before eleven. There was a sign on the inside door saying "Lift out of use due to the firemen's strike". I looked at the double-pushchair. I looked at the stairs.

We went for a walk around the green bit instead.

Having finished the post-pregnancy diet some time ago, I have not used the bathroom scales in a while. This morning I got back on and... appear to have lost another couple of pounds.

This is probably the cue for me to declare this weight loss a Bad Thing and show my contempt of all the media pressure that suggests modern women should look like stick insects. Sadly, I am not that strong-willed and instead I am (sadly) quite pleased to be slightly thinner. Besides, with Christmas approaching, it must be a good thing to have a couple of pounds more to fill with chocolate/roasts/alcohol/etc. Right ?

I think that it must be due to all the sprog lifting I do these days. Obviously lugging a couple of babies around is akin to a good half-hour at the local gym.

Perhaps I could add it to the Camus babysitting advertising literature :

"Babysitting : the family-friendly way to lose weight !
And remember, two babies make that pound-shedding twice as fast."

Perhaps not.

Beatrice managed a great milestone today - she looked at me and said "Mummy" (well, Mama - but close enough).

The fact that Dom is also addressed as Mama is, of course, beside the point.
