Some bits and pieces
Jun. 27th, 2021 08:35 pmThings over the last few days:
- Bea and I visited the new coffee shop which turns out to do great smoothies and excellent milkshakes (I wasn't in the mood for a coffee).
- We played the second scenario of the Detective game. Still good, and more complicated than the first scenario. It's really halfway to being a roleplaying game/story.
- I'm putting together bits for a possible job application.
- I'm back playing Secret World Legends.

Tea and coffee and mince pies, Eldritch Horror, mulled wine, more Eldritch Horror, Lamb casserole, red wine and mango cake, even more Eldritch Horror, dessert wine and turkish delight and then we finished Eldritch Horror.
That game took longer than I thought.
Gone, eighteen years and Warhammer 40K
Jul. 6th, 2013 02:53 pmOn Wednesday I got up at 6am (too early for me) and headed off to London to catch a train to Birmingham. I was off to see the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in Birmingham, which meant Queen Elizabeth Hospital. It was a fairly interesting day, although somewhat on the long side, but the train journey up proved unexpectedly productive as I started planning the Warhammer 40K game I'm running at the end of August.
The rest of the week was fairly uneventful both at work and at home. I like tennis but I've not been watching, instead I've been checking on the results from time to time. The weather has become glorious - it seems an age since we had a really lovely sunny patch.
Last night,
bateleur and I watched Gone (the 2012 release), courtesy of Lovefilms. It had received abominable reviews - which was unfair - but it wasn't brilliant either. On the plus side, the scenery was good and I like Amanda Seyfried (Lily from Veronica Mars). One the minus side, the plot wasn't so good, there was an unnecessary cat-in-a-cupboard moment and a rather stupid bit about how a car chase started.
Today we're planning to celebrate our eighteenth wedding anniversary (which is actually on Monday) and tomorrow we have
verlaine and family over. So it'll be a pretty full weekend.

Today is the last day of my fortnight holiday as I'm back in the office tomorrow. It's been an excellent two weeks as I've managed to do pretty much everything I wanted, both in terms of household chores and in terms of Enjoyable Stuff. I started the fortnight feeling sleepy and wanting a rest; although I was also keen to get out and do the things that are difficult to arrange with the duo around. The days went like this:
( Days )
It's going to be odd to be back at work tomorrow (not to mention tiring - I haven't been up before nine lately). However, I really feel that I've had a great fortnight and have managed to do everything I felt I should do along with lots of things I wanted to do. Ah well, next big stop will be Xmas! At least I still have much Farscape (I'm about a quarter of the way through season two) and Star Ocean (I'm mining copper) to keep me happy.

Arkham Investigations
Mar. 31st, 2008 06:59 pmYesterday,
chrestomancy and TheHattedOne came over for my birthday for cake, dinner, red wine and Arkham Investigations.
This is some fan's diligent efforts to turn Arkham Horror into more of an investigation/roleplaying game by adding all sorts of extra bits which mean that there is a specific Old One, only related monster types, pre-tracked events and gameplay involves going to a location and investigating for plot events (a failure leads to the normal card-drawing stuff).
It was impressive (although the writing style was a little wobbly in places) and any Arkham fans who haven't come across it should take a look. Sadly there's only one of it (although apparently there is a second attempt somewhere which is much less good).

It only took two years...
Jan. 27th, 2004 06:10 pmChristmas 2001, my parents bought me a murder mystery jigsaw and a jigsaw mat. In between hospital visits (first to Winchester and then to St Peters), I put the jigsaw together. When the twins finally came home I rolled it up into the mat, still not quite finished. Today I finally got around to unrolling it, finishing it and solving the mystery.
This process wasn't helped by the fact that there are two extra pieces (one I thought was extra from the start of today, the other only became obvious when I counted both holes and pieces) - both from an identical jigsaw. Or by a cat who felt that the jigsaw mat was for her. But overall, I'm feeling pleased with myself and happy that it's finally finished.

Mar. 31st, 2003 08:55 amYesterday was my birthday. Family arrived with presents, then my parents babysat so that
bateleur and I could go out for a meal with
chrestomancy and Frances.
The babies were, as always, overjoyed to see grandparents.
bateleur finished making their double swing in the back garden, so much time was spent playing on it. Beatrice loved it - the higher and faster the better - whilst Ryan wanted us to turn the sun off and spent the afternoon facing away from it.
Presents included Princess Mononoke, Settlers of the Stone Age, a number of picture frames and some Yu-Gi-Oh! cards.
( Yu-Gi-Oh! card details )
The meal was at Yun Kim's - a Thai restaurant near
chrestomancy and Warlock's flat. It had one of the most extensive vegetarian selections I have ever seen. They served us too much food, lots of red wine and the bill came with fortune cookies.
My cookie said "Your business with assume vast proportions". As my current work is being a housewife and child-minder, this is not a good thing.
And being thirty-three ? Feels much like thirty-two really.

Yu-Gi-Oh! and Stealth Ryan
Dec. 2nd, 2002 11:53 amYesterday saw the clash of the Yu-Gi-Oh! decks. Paul beat me (twice) and I beat Sarah (twice). However, at least some of those matches were won based on how typical the starting hand was (ie. the "wot no monsters ?" problem). My "Labyrinth Wall" deck did quite well, but I'm still not convinced I have the balance of magic cards right. Additionally Paul and I finally concluded the "Cocoon of Evolution" swap, only a few months after first discussing it.
Today, I was busy working on the (late) Fallen Star turn when I realised that Ryan had actually got past the current baby barrier (no wonder it was quiet). A quick investigation revealed him in the bathroom, playing with the bleach. Fortunately, the "child-proof" lid actually was - so there was no harm done.

Well the highlights of my four packs (Dom finally remembered to bring them home) were the rares. Three of the four were very nice indeed (a good ratio). Card number four was a fusion monster (Flower Wolf).
The others were :
i. Gravedigger Ghoul - removes two monsters from your opponent's graveyard (ie. bye, bye Dark Magician)
ii. Man Eater Bug (with a nice foil background) - flip to destroy one of your opponent's monsters (crap stats, but lovely special).
iii. Aqua Madoor - A 1200/2000 four-dot monster.
The common cards included a couple of nice monster-type power ups (of which the best was a field card for water creatures).
I will be waiting, with interest, to see what Martin gets.
Now - I need to finish Fallen Star before the weekend, 'cos I'm busy.
