That Athory session

lathanyAs ever, an update on my Swordsmaster game.
The session started with Lady Bryanna (![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
quisalan) showing the remaining ambassadorial party members Lord Roland (ao_lai), Taronus (chrisvenus) and the-many-titled Heleth (venta) the letter which Danaeus left outlining his reasons for assassinating Duke Lawrence.
The party moped. Overnight. Then the following morning they went to the docks to keep their appointment with Lady Constance of High Island, the younger sister of Duchess Dimity. Lady Constance explained her purpose in Carnival. To speak with the Duchess/Duke/Duke about providing assistance to the islands under attack by the Lirrisorn. She explained that she had fought the battle of the Eye and seen the land sink beneath the waves. The party listened and agreed to travel to High Island and meet with Duchess Dimity. At some point.
Then they returned to their residence (the former home of Lady Verity and Lord Westling). There they discovered Elias (adviser to the King) waiting for them. Elias explained that the King was concerned that Athory might unite under its own King (the recently-declared Imharn) and that the diplomatic party should work to avoid this taking place. He then introduced them to Master Tengath the mage (chrestomancy) and his assistant Gref (bateleur) - city mages to help them. He finally left, explaining he would return in three days.
Tengath and Gref introduced themselves to the party whilst Heleth travelled to the Duke's Court and arranged an appointment that evening for the Lathany party to speak with him. On her journey back she discovered that graffiti was springing up all around Carnival declaring Imharn's right to the Athory throne. The afternoon was then spent carrying out weapons practice (Bryanna discovered that the Thorunsanne ring had magical properties) and magical research. Plus Heleth gave a fascinated Gref a long talk on who Leonides was and what he had accomplished.
Their meeting with Duke Yarrow provided interesting news. Duke Artallory of the Moon had been assassinated and Teriaja, the southernmost island of the Snake was under attack. He had also received communications from the Duke Valentin (Oak), Duchess Sarabella (South) and the King. After some persuading he agreed to let the party see the royal jewels - which were currently in the hands of his own mages.
The Royal Jewels were becoming a issue of great concern for the Lathany party. They wanted to see the jewels and test their magical properties. They were also concerned that the jewels should not fall into the wrong hands (which could mean the hands of any Athorian). However, the party had no moral or legal claim to the jewels themselves. Consequently the diplomats spent the rest of that evening deciding how they were going to proceed.
The following morning saw an exchange of letters between Lady Bryanna and the empathy mages.
"Can we see the jewels ?"
"Nope. Try next month. Actually, next year would be even better."
"Please ?"
"Nope."
"Can we have a meeting then ? The Duke said you would be delighted to see us."
"OK then. Come along. This evening."
This resulted in another day of magic research/walking the city/graffiti admiring. Up until the point when Lady Bryanna was bored enough to investigate the secret passage leading from their residence. The secret passage which lead directly into an ambush.
About ten fate points, a luckily-failed focus test, a hefty spell effect and a few triples later Bryanna got away. Having left the chief opponent in a bad way. After investigation by Tengath and Gref, the ambassador realised the sorry truth - she had gate-crashed her evening appointment's location. Consequently, instead of wheedling the jewels out of their host (the charming Linos - head of the Carnival house) the party spent the evening apologising and casting healing spells.
This left them no nearer the jewels themselves. But Elias should be returning soon enough...
Must remember to update the Athory pages. Change the names of the Dukes and Duchesses, where necessary. That might take a while.
