Blood cancelled
Jul. 18th, 2021 12:44 pmI was booked to give blood today. I wasn't particularly looking forward to the walk in the current baking heat (particularly as it was a midday appointment), but at least it wasn't very far. Then, just under an hour before my appointment, they cancelled me "due to staffing issues". I think, on balance, I'm relieved.
Summer holiday - Center Parcs
Jul. 18th, 2021 12:42 pmWe've had a lovely few days doing many of the usual things. The falconry, as ever, was my favourite, but the crazy golf and the pottery painting were pretty good too. The meal out on the Wednesday - pub food (burger and chips) included two rather excellent cocktails (Pink Gin Spritz and Passionfruit Martini).

Also we did well with the weather - no rain (after the arrival day) and no sunburn.

Some bits and pieces
Jun. 27th, 2021 08:35 pmThings over the last few days:
- Bea and I visited the new coffee shop which turns out to do great smoothies and excellent milkshakes (I wasn't in the mood for a coffee).
- We played the second scenario of the Detective game. Still good, and more complicated than the first scenario. It's really halfway to being a roleplaying game/story.
- I'm putting together bits for a possible job application.
- I'm back playing Secret World Legends.

The Threads of Magic
Jun. 3rd, 2021 09:43 pmThe Threads of Magic by Alison Croggon is a children's book (age 9+) set in a fantasy world. I was struck by the number of issues it had - too many narrators, narrators and threads that weren't really part of the story, so many coincidences and a lack of reason for some events (such as how it all started). And yet... it's a gripping story with a great concept.
End of May
May. 31st, 2021 05:49 pmThings over the last week:
- C's cat Cooper has learned how to get onto the top of the door. Sadly, he has not learned how to come down (other than to yowl until a human gets him).
- Dom bought me roses. The orange ones are all "Yeah! Let's go!" The yellow ones are "OK, we'll open a bit." The red ones are "Shan't."
- We had our first visitor last Thursday. Martin came over for food and to look through old photos from our childhood.
- Kentucky Route Zero continues to be weird, I might post some screenshots from the acts so far. I don't know how to describe it other than a bit not-quite-text-adventure and knows it. Also, a little bit dark.
- We had our road dug up and new gas pipes put in. Fortunately the weather had warmed a little, so losing the heating for most of the day wasn't a problem.

A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine
May. 23rd, 2021 10:18 pmI recently finished A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine. It's a debut science fiction novel and apparently won the Hugo award. I really enjoyed it. It is a mystery plot set in a detailed universe. I quickly warmed to the protagonist (Mahit Dzmare), she was both interesting and different. Also, I really liked that the author had managed to convey the feel of an empire without naming an entire telephone directory of characters. Definitely recommended.
WH40K Inquisitor - Martyr
May. 16th, 2021 06:14 pmGameFAQs has published my review of WH40K Inquisitor - Martyr.
The single player is decent in a Diablo 2 kind of way. The story is quite interesting. Best of all, it does keep to the WH40K atmosphere. However, the co-op was just too buggy to play for long.

Wonder Woman 1984
Apr. 7th, 2021 06:29 pmOver Easter we watched Wonder Woman 1984.
I'd liked the first film, but knew that this one had received worse reviews. And... it was watchable, but poor. Whilst I liked Steve from the first film, I did wince over it being (counts) 66 years on and still Diana's greatest wish is focussed around this man: "I'd like him back". Also, more generally the film seemed rather messy, a bit unexplained (how had that businessman ever heard of the stone or that the museum had it?) and somewhat cheesy.

On Sunday morning I went to the vaccination centre at Heathrow and got my first jab (AstraZeneca). There was a queue (although far worse by the time I left), I reached the front of the building 20 minutes after my appointment time (I finished 50 mins after my time). I suspect more people are turning up now there are news stories about shortages. It was a production line approach of medical questions and then on to someone else for the jab (this worked fine).
By Sunday evening I had a temperature and yesterday I had various muscle aches and felt a bit ropey. This morning a few mild muscle aches, but I think it's all gone now.

The Memory Police
Mar. 28th, 2021 09:41 pmI was part of the office Secret Santa last Xmas and my present was The Memory Police by Yōko Ogawa. I've spent the last couple of months struggling through it. It has a fascinating concept - that things, and most people's memory of them, disappear one by one. It's very 1984 (disclaimer - I've seen the film but not read the book).
I have two big problems with it. The first is that a book about someone's world getting smaller and more austere whilst they feel more and more trapped is not really what I want to read in lockdown. The second is that the author really isn't interested in mechanics or explanations. All the questions I wanted to ask at the end of the first chapter or two remained unanswered.
So - I'm sure it's an excellent book and I wanted to like it. However, I didn't.

In what is effectively my social outing of the weekend (and possibly the month) I went to give blood this afternoon.
For the first time I had a late afternoon appointment. This meant that I had only two people after me and got to see the staff start to pack up. I got through the interview bit quickly (no problem with the iron content for once) and then onto the chair. The woman who looked after me was very good, and explained what she was doing throughout. This was the first time someone had explained that they put pressure on the area at the end to check you actually have stopped bleeding.
I miss the hot drinks, but still had a welcome Orange Club.

Last Friday we watched Parasite. I was expecting Good Things... which might have been part of the problem. It was interesting and watchable, but not enjoyable. Some of that is the subject matter - I like my movies more upbeat, particularly at the moment. But also it just seemed to be too obvious in places - like literally covering the family home with shit. In general, disappointing.
Alex Rider
Feb. 28th, 2021 09:51 pmWe watched the first (currently only) season of Alex Rider and finished it on Friday. It's about a teenage spy and adapted from a Young Adult book series (which I have not read). The first season is Point Blanc. It's OK. It's nicely paced and with a decent cast. The tech is unrealistic and so are Alex's skills, but if you take that as read it's a lot more watchable than some things.
