The twins are due back this morning, having been parked in Harston since Easter Monday.

A little quiet time )

Today I'm still feeling full and happy. However, I'll have to move away from the computer at some point as there is lunch to be bought and a house to make twin-safe again.

Well, [livejournal.com profile] bateleur did a review of the restaurant, but left the food to me. The Menu )

Twas a good evening. However, that many units and a revolving restaurant simply do not go together.
lathany: (Default)
We took the duo to Cambridge on Saturday. As is often the case, this meant the start of a twin-free week.

Lazy Days )

And tomorrow [livejournal.com profile] triskellian and [livejournal.com profile] smiorgan will be here!

Last Friday, Ryan developed conjunctivitis (evidence suggests that he picked it up at playgroup). We picked up eye drops from the doctor and he's missing all his playgroup/toddler group stuff until next Friday. This meant Bea went on her own yesterday. However, last night, it was clear she had it too so I've collected a second prescription and she's going to miss everything until next Tuesday. They've both had red eyes (Ryan now doesn't - but still has to complete his course of eye drops) and I've felt sorry for them as much for missing their groups as for feeling poorly.

However, I've also felt sorry for me. I'm going to miss both my free mornings this week, 'cos one or other of them was/will be home. I've been up and down the cold high street to the doctor and the chemist. I've endured the twins in the doctor's waiting room for half an hour (stopping them from bothering other patients was a full time job) and I've had to fight to get every single dose of eye drops in (two twins, both eyes, four times a day). And I'm still not sure whether to take just Ryan to the birthday party at the weekend (Bea will still be infectious). Grrr.

Before the week of illness, I had a fun twin-free Saturday afternoon/evening which [livejournal.com profile] secretrebel has already mentioned. [livejournal.com profile] frax's Orange and Lemon Refrigerator cake was yummy and weird. Sort of a cross between mousse and cheesecake. I think it makes a very good citrus summer cake/pudding - [livejournal.com profile] frax does the book suggest suitable occasions for its cakes?

Following this, my parents were over Monday. Quite apart from it being nice to see them, and nice to see toddler-walkers, they brought over Christmas presents from Uncle [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy. Both the twins now have long-sleeved t-shirts with glow-in-the-dark dinosaurs on them. Plus hooded tops. I got a wonderful, long, black, velvet skirt with a patterned white-and-black hem and a navy blue summer dress.

All Change

From yesterday, the daily routine in the toddler camp changed. The afternoon nap was removed from the schedule and instead the twosome were made to suffer an earlier bedtime.

They seem to have survived and thrived. I was pretty tired, but then Monday is my worst day because they're at home both morning and afternoon. On the plus side, it will prepare them for nursery (next October) and makes them more likely to settle down to sleep at the end of the day. On the minus side, gone is my daily two-hour break for writing. Now, the plan is to do the writing in the evening after they've gone up. However, I'm going to have to be awake enough to do so and I don't yet know if I will be.

On the other side of the Atlantic, [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy and TheHattedOne have thoroughly enjoyed their time in Antigua where they were learning Spanish (one-on-one, accommodation and food included). They are now in Coban, which they don't like nearly as much. Apparently the weather resembles a wet English March (like they needed to leave the country for that). They're hoping it'll improve and, after all, next week they'll be in Tikal where there are Mayan ruins.

Finally - anyone else ever tried the Twinings Vanilla and Coconut tea? A cupful alerted me to the fact that it's got black tea as a base, not herbal tea (yeah, I should try reading the packet). However, I have now decided that it's very nice with milk.

We have shortbread (recipe from [livejournal.com profile] venta last year). Soon we will have players. Yep, it's another session of The Wheel.

Definitely festive, although I feel this should appear very early (to hint at buying) or on the last but one day (to hint at wrapping).

I'm looking forward to next week. An evening in tomorrow, [livejournal.com profile] ealuscerwen popping around on Tuesday evening and then up to Cambridge (although I'm not so sure about the "having Christmas dinner twice" on consecutive days thing). Also, my game is finally coming together (the name is going to be ICESP unless I get some eleventh hour inspiration) and so I can start in the New Year.

In other news I have fished out The Usborne First Cookbook (a first cookbook for kids - about my standard) to make "Special Chocolate Cake" this evening. Doubtless, Beatrice will be enthralled.
lathany: (Housework)
That's right, I'm coming to the end of another twinless week. Yet again I have tried to do a number of household projects and the main one has become much bigger than expected.

The Wall )

Quite apart from The Wall, I have managed a few other jobs and even done some fun stuff.

The rest of my time )

It's been a busy week.

Lobster Pot

Last night (whilst watching Q&A from Alias season one) I was summoned upstairs by a bawling Ryan. There was something new in his cot - Beatrice. She had climbed out from the lower bunk to the windowsill, moved along the windowsill and then dropped into his cot. Only one problem - she couldn't get out again.

I fished her out, calmed my upset son and went back downstairs to finish my box-watching. This morning I went in to collect them both for breakfast and discovered Beatrice back in the cot again. It looks like this is going to be her thing for the month (I wish she'd gone for potty training instead). Oh well, better get used to it.

This week is the Last Week Before Playgroup, (although Mother and Toddler groups will be re-starting). I met Vicki on my way to Tesco and she reassured me that the playgroup would not ring up on the first morning asking me to remove the duo and never darken their door again (although she did give Ryan a thoughtful look as she said this). I believe her. Mostly. If all goes according to plan then I'll have a couple of free hours two mornings a week. But only if all goes according to plan.

Writing-wise no big news. Roland Versus Sophie is waiting for printer paper before I get a copy bound. This means that Empty-handed goes back to being my main writing task. I'm only about a quarter of the way through, but may still finish by Christmas.

Oh, and I'm enjoying my new coffees (a present from [livejournal.com profile] quisalan as mentioned here). The Vietnamese one is slightly more bitter than I'm used to (I mostly drink Columbian) but the Pico Duarte (Dominican Republic) is lovely. However it should not describe itself as "chocolate tasting" because it doesn't. In fact, I've never met a coffee which did, despite this being a popular descriptive phrase. But then maybe I'm just a bit picky about chocolate.
lathany: (Twins)
Today I cooked and served a new food to the twins. Pizza. The plain cheese and tomato kind.

Ryan "finger foods" Blake loved it and finished his in record time. Beatrice "plate clearer" Katrin took a little longer, but still managed most of it.

Overall, a great success.

Browsing the BBC health website I found this.

(A story about the dangers of breaking from Atkins and adding extras - in this case alcohol and biscuits)

Now, I've been on various diets in my time but, when Atkins appeared, I decided I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Not based on expert medical opinion you understand, just a deep-rooted prejudice against a diet that worked on a high fat content.

Also, having read this, when/if I go back on a diet this sort of thing wouldn't suit me. Simply because I too would break the rules from time to time and don't fancy being rushed off in an ambulance for my weaknesses. I prefer the low-cal (ie. fifteen hundred cal) diets where the weight comes off gradually and you can eat anything, just in small quantities.

But, more to the point, given that it's well-known that people often break diets should Atkins be promoted at all given this sort of risk ? On the one hand saying it shouldn't is like suggesting it's OK to sue MacDonalds for weight gain (which I don't agree with - I believe people should take responsibility for their own eating habits). On the other, if someone doesn't understand the risks of the diet then it could be deadly. Is there a health warning out there which is big enough ?

Yesterday I had a dental check up. This translated into a great day out.

Christmas shopping, pregnancy stories and a rather nice meal )

Today I'm due to meet [livejournal.com profile] angry_marmot and [livejournal.com profile] cuthbertcross's cousin Emma at Waterloo. Assuming we recognise each other of course.
lathany: (Default)
On Friday we packaged up the twins and their stuff and drove up to Cambridge to drop them off with Granny Jo and J-J.

And Saturday morning we went shoe shopping )

The Yeung Sing )

The second reason for choosing the Yeung Sing was its proximity to Nottingham - our tourist location of choice for the weekend. Two tourists in Nottingham )

[livejournal.com profile] bateleur has now retrieved all the bedroom decorating equipment from the shed. This means that I ought to be getting on with the whole "repainting the bedroom" task. One the other hand, maybe I'll start first thing tomorrow...
lathany: (Default)
Last night [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy and [livejournal.com profile] angry_marmot came round and had dinner with us.

They got to eat food and everything )

Today I'm preparing for the week of twinlessness. Packing clothes, bottles, nappy changing stuff and buying in extra supplies of food jars and nappies has pretty much taken out my day.

But, the end result will be great glorious.
lathany: (Default)
My parents were supposed to appear on Monday to babysit whilst I went shopping in London. Because of cold bugs that was put off until yesterday.

And very successful it was too )

Today didn't start terribly well. In addition to my ill-timed weighing and my still-present cold, I had to change two of the grossest nappies I've seen in ages. But I'll spare you all the details.

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and I celebrated our eighth wedding anniversary. My parents were babysitting so we went to Swans (the best local restaurant) and then came home for drinks. It appears that we have managed to settle into a routine, see this !

Additionally Frances sent me a detailed review of Mourn's Gift. It agreed with most of the points that [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy (and [livejournal.com profile] bateleur) made and gave me some ideas of how to improve the structuring of my writing to make a detailed plot more understandable (not to mention dealing with the problems caused by a cast of thousands). Some of this won't come in until I start book number three, though, 'cos my second book is over half-way through. There was also another vote for Obero as favourite character (who she described as "a slightly conceited shiny pigeon"). That gives Obero two votes, Mire one and Varilor one. And that copy will now be passed to [livejournal.com profile] venta.

My mother returned the Buffy and Angel tapes for episodes in the late-teens and the Hex trilogy (which she enjoyed) in exchange for the end of Buffy and Angel and [livejournal.com profile] bateleur's copy of Waking Dream. She'll also get the latest Harry Potter - once [livejournal.com profile] bateleur has finished with it.

All in all, a good day.

Yesterday was my Athory session.

Will the real Duke Lawrence step forward please ? )

Meanwhile, fed up with baby food, Beatrice had been eying up the session snacks. She started by trying a few grapes - but found them rather large for her mouth. Undeterred, she looked around for something better; and found it. She sneaked up to the closed pack of mini muffins. As soon as she was certain that all the adults were pre-occupied with their strange game, she opened it and pulled out two mini-muffins sticking one straight in her mouth. Then of course, she was spotted. Mummy confiscated both muffins, then relented and gave one back after peeling the paper off of it. Mummy also whisked out the camera and took photographs. There were many chocolatey crumbs and expressions of enjoyment. Then Daddy returned from the bathroom to be told all about it.

Beatrice in a chocolatey mess is always [livejournal.com profile] bateleur's baby (as opposed to mine). Daddy got out the vacuum cleaner. He vacuumed the crumbs up off the floor (despite Bea's best efforts to pick them up and stuff them in her mouth first) and then vacuumed the Beatrice. Bea didn't like this at all and burst into tears ("I've never seen her so upset" exclaimed [livejournal.com profile] chrisvenus). However a couple of hugs later and she had recovered.

[livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy stuck around to do his saintly babysitting bit, so [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and I went out for a curry after cotting the babies. It's been several months since I last went for curry. I usually prefer chinese because meals out since the babies have been rare and the chinese is better. However I enjoyed my lamb pasanda, boiled rice (I've not been able to cope with the richness of any other type of rice since my post-pregnancy diet), peshwari nan and carribean coffee.

And Dom's mother confirmed that the babies will be disappearing again in thirty-three days time...
lathany: (Default)
I visited the baby clinic this morning and successfully obtained a list of mother and toddler groups in the Feltham area. Bea and Ryan need a little more company than just me now, so it had to be done. There seem to be plenty to choose from, each charging £1 or 50p per toddler (covering tea, biscuits and a drink for each child). I'll probably start with the one that meets on Thursday mornings in the High Street library. If that isn't working out I'll find another one. And, yes, I definitely have mixed feelings about going along.

Whilst we were there, the usual weighing took place :

Beatrice : 23lb 14oz (10.83kg)
Ryan : 22lb 3oz (10.08kg)

And, yes, if you check against last month's figures, they are actually lighter. This is caused by the difference between the summer wear (to deal with still-present heat) and the heavy cord dungarees that they wore last time.

My other news is far from gripping. I caught an advert on CBeebies announcing that Storytime next week will be read by the EastEnders cast (the actors of Kat, Ian, Martin, Sonia and Roy from the looks of it). And Tesco still aren't stocking chocolate pots.

A cooking question - does anyone know a good recipe for spaghetti carbonara ? It doesn't have to be traditional (ie. versions that use cream are more than acceptable).
lathany: (Default)
Yesterday was my birthday. Family arrived with presents, then my parents babysat so that [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and I could go out for a meal with [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy and Frances.

The babies were, as always, overjoyed to see grandparents. [livejournal.com profile] bateleur finished making their double swing in the back garden, so much time was spent playing on it. Beatrice loved it - the higher and faster the better - whilst Ryan wanted us to turn the sun off and spent the afternoon facing away from it.

Presents included Princess Mononoke, Settlers of the Stone Age, a number of picture frames and some Yu-Gi-Oh! cards.

Yu-Gi-Oh! card details )

The meal was at Yun Kim's - a Thai restaurant near [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy and Warlock's flat. It had one of the most extensive vegetarian selections I have ever seen. They served us too much food, lots of red wine and the bill came with fortune cookies.

My cookie said "Your business with assume vast proportions". As my current work is being a housewife and child-minder, this is not a good thing.

And being thirty-three ? Feels much like thirty-two really.
lathany: (Default)
As ever, a Buffy and an Angel review. [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and I finally got around to watching them on Saturday.

Buffy - Sleeper, Angel - Apocalypse, Nowish )

As planned, we went to the cinema and watched Solaris on Thursday night. [livejournal.com profile] bateleur enjoyed it, but I was rather less entertained by it. Embarrassingly enough, I am not entirely sure why I didn't enjoy it much. Possibly I just wasn't in the mood for it (certainly I was hoping for something lighter). Oh, and we both spotted that the female lead was also in The Truman Show.

Friday was the day of shopping and lovely food. Clothes and Thai )

Yesterday marked the end of an excellent week, when we drove back up to Cambridge to collect our much-indulged offspring. Whereupon [livejournal.com profile] bateleur's mother made my day by offering to have them for a week every other month. I suspect it will be slightly less frequent than that (although their next Cambridge visit will be May time), but the idea of 5-6 weeks "holiday" for me really appeals. Plus the stories of Ryan's dislike of swimming (he hates the lack of control) and Beatrice's ability to eat anything ("she finished her breadstick, then grabbed Ryan's and ate it as well") are very entertaining. As of today, the twins seem to be well and happy and have been fairly quiet this morning (once Ryan had got his five-thirty start out of his system). They want more batteries for the snail, though.

Ah well, just sixty-seven days left to go... ;-)
