I was out of bed just after eight this morning (yep - that's early for me) to prepare for Bea's physiotherapy session.

Janet (the physiotherapist) was due at 09:15. This left me forty-five minutes from the twins wake-up time to feed two lots of breakfast and to apply double doses of early morning wash, nappy-change and dressing (dinosaur tops and shorts today).

I succeeded and was eating my own breakfast when she arrived on the doorstep. She was very impressed by Bea's walking as my daughter no longer needs support. She was less impressed by Bea's refusal to co-operate with the various exercises; although she expected it to happen soon or later ("she'll start trying again when she reaches four"). However overall it was a good thing and our next appointment isn't until Halloween when I'm to drive the twins to the clinic to give them an extensive work-out in one of the on-site play areas.

So it looks like the various visits and tests might be finally winding down (quite a long time after it was clear there was no long-term problem). Bea's due for a hearing test in a couple of weeks and we're hoping that it might also be the last one for a while (she had a cold last time, so they needed to re-test).

Looking at my last entry I realise I never wrote-up last weekend. It's becoming distant past and [livejournal.com profile] ealuscerwen has already written up a good account of Saturday but, anyway, here I go :

I spent Saturday with [livejournal.com profile] ealuscerwen and [livejournal.com profile] frax seeing their respective homes, eating, drinking and wandering around Camden. It was good to escape the twins, less good to return to South West Trains ("the 11:13 from Reading is running one hour and twenty-eight minutes late" - for a ten minute journey) and really great to get out and do the girly gossiping and shopping thing which I never do. Although we may have failed on the shopping side given that we bought a grand total of no items (pity the green dress was "small"). Plus I got a belated birthday present of the Sauron expansion for LotR (still unopened - despite interested looks from [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy).

Sunday we did tax returns (both are in paper format, but we're currently trying to put them on-line because if we get the hang of it, it'll be easier next year) and then [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy came round for pasta and Settlers of the Stone Age.

I enjoyed Settlers of the Stone Age; not least because I won. I think I prefer it to the original (I never won that) as it seems to be a less random game (although we still rolled more fives and elevens than could be reasonably expected). [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy talked about his approaching scuba holiday and year off plans; both with Frances (also known as <lj user="angry_marmot">). The latter seems as though it might actually happen this time around.

Monday was unremarkable apart from a rather nice chinese takeaway from our local (chicken, cashew nuts and water chestnuts in yellow bean sauce, fillet beef in spicy mandarin sauce and egg fried rice).

Apart from the usual twins stuff, I'm carrying on with my writing (I have a short story to do before the end of the month) and playing Final Fantasy VI for, believe it or not, the first time.

It has to be said that FFVI is really only for the FF fanatics. Converted to the PSOne from an even more ancient platform (I should know which, but don't), the graphics (2-D) are very, very basic. There's the odd FMV sequence that they've added when they converted it, but mostly you're looking at 2-D shapes moving up/down or left/right (but not both at once). However, to make up for this, the music's not bad and the plot (so far) qualifies as rather good.

The game itself is a mix of VII and IX. The idea of finding items in various containers everywhere, of talking to everyone and the slightly more hidden directions for the world map are all VII-like (not to mention the amnesia - although that is a theme of many an FF game). However the different party roles, the equipment (cotton robe, leather hat, etc), the moogles and the fighting music (with four person line-up) are all IX and I now see why people referred to IX as having more in common with pre-PSOne incarnations than either VII or VIII did.

I'm also keeping my eyes open for X - 2 and XII release dates, of course.

Nothing planned for tomorrow, but on Friday my parents are coming over to babysit. [livejournal.com profile] bateleur is working from home so should be ready for a prompt exit that evening to the local cinema complex to see Tomb Raider II. Yes, I know it's supposed to be cr*p. But it has Chris Barrie in it and therefore will still be worth watching.

Oh, and the chocolate pots reappeared in Tesco.

If I recall correctly, FFIV was originally a SNES game.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the graphics. They are indeed 2D and pretty crude, but they do convey the FF feel quite well.

The gameplay itself is also of similar complexity to the later ones.

Have you tried any of I, II, IV or V (also out on PS1) yet?

No - I was going to see how I got on with VI first. Admittedly I'll now have to buy them off of ebay, but never mind.
