Final Fantasy IV Review
Jan. 26th, 2004 04:21 pmAs I now own a copy of Final Fantasy Anthologies, I have spent the last few weeks on Final Fantasy IV.
At first glance it's much the same as the other pre-VII FFs. 2-D graphics, Uematsu music, Chocobos, Bahamut, weapon shopping and Cid. I found a few aspects initially irritating (not knowing how a weapon/armour compares to your existing stuff until you pay for it, limited equipment spaces) but soon got used to them.
However, once I settled down, I developed a high opinion of IV. It has an interesting plotline (or several), the class system works rather well, the main character isn't a jerk and, best of all, you usually know exactly where you're supposed to be going next. I also liked all the characters; the twins are my favourite, but Rydia, Cid and Edge come pretty close. Having finished it, my opinion is now slightly lower. All of the above is true, but the end boss is *incredibly* hard compared to the rest.
I found most of the game interesting - battles were often difficult without being impossible, but I never had to wander around levelling up before I could face the next section. However, all that changed. I found I was roughly fifteen levels too low (ie. the last 7 hours of game play from a total of 27) when I came face-to-face with the final boss (mainly important 'cos of HP vs his damage levels). Even after I went off and finished all the side quests, this was still the case (and, yes, I know all about the Dark Matter stuff which helps win that last fight).
Overall - recommended, but it should carry a warning tag about the last fight.
Anyone who has had half an eye on my LJ will already know -
bateleur and I are now twinless. Having spent a useful morning at the dump (necessary during their absence), I'm now looking forward to a relaxing week.

Clarification: We weren't at the dump disposing of the twins - it was the remains of an old wardrobe (and some other junk) !

Date: 2004-01-26 09:01 am (UTC)I've also got all the Final Fantasy rereleases, but have only really played VI to any significant amount. I may have to give them another go.
It looks like Final Fantasy X-2 should be out 20th Feb, and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles will hopefully be out in March (on the GameCube). So we should be getting lots of Final Fantasy goodness shortly. :)
