But have you noticed that various small islands are in red? I assume these are nominally U.S. territory and therefore counted from visits there (at least, I suspect that's why they're in red on my map, as I have never been to any of them).
Come to think about it, this is exactly like what happens in Civ. In the early game people fight over continents. Once those have been claimed, the top powers go off and get all the islands.
I haven't yet been able to get very far with the Americans in that game...either they're overwhelmed early on; or to pre-empt that - going on a war path decreases global tech development and the game is over by the time the first tanks roll off the assemblyline (no or limited airpower; situation mostly sorted by the time the US gets its special unit).
