I have finally completed Final Fantasy VI.

I thought it was one of the better FF games. OK, it has problems. But most of those come from its age - poorer graphics, sounds effects (I'd have loved to seen the entire opera scene in FMV and full sound) and the battles are obviously an earlier version.

That said... once you've played for a while it's quite easy to get to like the graphics, the sound isn't bad (I love the main theme) whilst the battles have some nice features which have been removed from later games (I find it overall preferable to VIII or IX). The whole idea of learnable magic combined with "Fight", "Item" and a special character-specific ability makes the characters different enough to feel they aren't clones but still give them enough in common to make the game easy to follow. Plus I prefer the way in which "Zombie" is done (anyone zombiefied is no longer under your control).

There is vast range of characters (up to fourteen different final party members) and they all have cute little portraits and (very roughly) equal roles. Unlike VII - X, VI doesn't have a main character. If I had to nominate one, then Terra would win as it is primarily her story; but she's not nearly as obvious as Cloud, Squall, Zidane or Tidus.

I would say that VI's best points are its plot(s), side quests, character variation and the fact it provides plenty of save points in the last part of the game (this last point is a failing in most other FF games). There's a bit of everything - the main "world in trouble" stuff along with explanation of magic, family tragedies, love affairs, family re-unions and government battles. It's a bit of a pity that they never choose to explain why Kefka is a total nutter; but then they rarely do indicate why the big bad is attempting world destruction (eg. Ultimecia, Necron, Jenova). Also, it's a nice, long game and you feel you get plenty of play hours for your money's worth.

It has non-age problems. It's easier to get lost in VI than most other FF games. You end up having to do more walking around (when you've collected something/someone from a dungeon, nine times out of ten you have to walk back out again through the random encounters). And you can get to the end and not be hard enough to win (although, with the exception of VII, I've usually found this to be the case) - although I was interested enough in the side quests to manage this time.

Overall, I'm pretty impressed. At some point I'll replay it and try to find all the things I missed the first time around.

Well, I also own Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II. But first, I have a book to finish.
