The record for the hottest day ever in the UK has just been broken. It reached 37.4 C at Heathrow. Yep - that place less than three miles away from us.

I want to move back to icy Oxford.

Update : Now 37.9 C.

Oxford isn't much better, don't worry. Not got a thermometere to hand and not sure offhand where to find exactly how "icy" we are on the web...

Scratch that. I found it. According to http://www-atm.physics.ox.ac.uk/main/weather/ we are an icy 25.1 with a jolly 61% humidity. Thinking about it since we had thunder earlier I'm not entirely surprised. Though I was hoping that the thunder would come with much pretty lightnign and rain but I saw none. :(

According to the BBC, Oxford was 31 to compare with Heathrow's 38.

Not in our house - our thermometer has hit 33 today, and that's in a room with the curtains drawn to provide some shade. Not sure where the Beeb measure their temperatures, but Brize Norton and Benson (the RAF weather stations) are often slightly cooler than the city itself, thanks to geography.

We've got a pretty accurate temperature gauger and read just over 39 degrees C in the shade at about 2.45 this afternoon...

They just do more measuring at Heathrow - it's not actually hotter than anywhere else.

That's actually based on the Met Office stats - they do more measuring everywhere.

But if your figure is correct, you should write to the BBC and let them know they've got it wrong (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3138865.stm) !
