A small matter of food poisoning

Saturday was a time for abandoning my offspring to the loving care of their father and disappearing Stratford-wards with
chrestomancy for Measure for Measure.
smiorgan has already written an account (here) of this. I enjoyed it much more for a number of reasons :
- I am shorter than
smiorgan and consequently had no leg-room problems
- I studied the play relatively recently so knew it well enough to follow the language despite one rather unintelligible accent (from Lucio)
- I knew that the Duke became the friar and consequently wasn't thrown when he adopted a gorgeous
inskauldrak-like accent and shaved his head
- I have a soft spot for the play (it's my second favourite after Twelfth Night), so it would have taken a great deal to really ruin it for me
I enjoyed Isabella's performance (Emma Fielding) and quite liked the Duke as well. Angelo I was less keen on because I felt he was portrayed as a weedier man than the text of the play suggests (eg. the Duke's jealousy was less fathomable). I would, however, have preferred a more "period" setting and agree completely with
smiorgan about the wall.
The company was also good (as well as
smiorgan and
chrestomancy,
triskellian,
ao_lai and Frank/Francine/etc were present) although
chrestomancy's other half really needs a journal so that she also can be reduced to a convenient LJ tag. My malteser ice cream was also worthy of a mention (the others - minus the icecream hater - all had cornetto-type things).
Sunday was the day that my craving for spring rolls resulted in
bateleur getting food-poisoning and for
kirian and Pete coming round for a game and dinner.
bateleur and I took the twins (who were nicely behaved) around Tesco and chose some lunch things (I wanted spring rolls from the deli) and some dinner things to serve to
kirian and Pete (including a rather yummy "Finest" chocolate-fudge cake, but I digress).
kirian and Pete arrived at about a quarter to three and, after a certain amount of chat (Pete and Connall are planning to run a game called "New Eden" - I think - after Dan's "Bronze" game ends,
kirian is doing the website with
floralaetifica) the twins came down.
kirian was relieved to find that they were less screamy and scarey than she'd feared and even pronounced them "rather cute".
Because we only had a short time for roleplaying (I think it ended up being just under three hours) I had prepared an extremely quick game - "The Maunder Legacy". The three PCs were cousins who were invited to Maunder House (owned by their rich great-uncle Ashley) and then were given a test (they had reached 21 and Ashley wanted to see if they would be able to help him with his work). The house was the key to the game. It was essentially a research centre containing a number of ancient prophecies, spells and strange guardians and the game was spent taking tests in the various rooms and seeing what the place contained.
Pete remarked at the end that it was more of a prelude than anything else, but all three players seemed to enjoy it. Or rather two of them did. Poor
bateleur became quieter and quieter across the course of the afternoon and had only eaten half of his dinner and ignored his yummy chocolate cake. It was only after he had driven our guests to the station that he admitted he was extremely unwell and disappeared into the bathroom looking very pale.
I spent Sunday evening talking to my parents on the telephone about their holiday in America (they flew to Denver and did all the touristy stuff) and consequently have babysitters for
bateleur and my eighth wedding anniversary next week (they missed the twins and were delighted to offer).
Despite still looking rather white,
bateleur has gone into work today. This is despite always telling me that I tended to go in too readily when I was ill...
