Self Service and Shakespeare

This weekend marked the start of a new era for the twins - they were expected to feed themselves.
Of course, they did not respond well to this change. From the moment that the bibs were tied (OK, I used clothes pegs to attach them in the end), I could tell that there was going to be trouble. Beatrice tried to throw the bowl on the floor (fortunately we had attached suction pads to the bottom). Then, once she realised that the bowl was stuck permanently, she contented herself with waving the spoon in the air; then throwing that onto the floor instead.
Ryan, on the other hand, simply scowled at his food for five minutes. When this failed to summon the feeder (me) back to their post, he burst into tears. Consequently we came up with a compromise; wrapping their hand around the spoon, then holding and guiding it to the bowl and up to their mouths. This worked surprisingly well; although there was still a substantial amount of ick all over their bibs. However, I imagine it will be some weeks before they can do it alone (even in a messy way).
In the meantime I have been counting down the days to the week with the grannies (eight to go) and planning a few other offspring-free trips.
I am off to see Measure for Measure in Stratford with
chrestomancy, Frances,
triskellian,
smiorgan and
ao_lai. Measure for Measure is sometimes described as a "problem comedy". There is a famous saying for dividing Shakespeare's plays into comedies and tragedies, "A comedy will end in the church, a tragedy in the churchyard". Under this definition Measure for Measure is more of a comedy; but much will depend upon how Isabella is played in the final scene.
In addition to Measure for Measure, there are apparently going to be open air performances of Twelfth Night and The Tempest in Oxford. I have studied both plays and would quite like to see both performed, although I have a preference for Twelfth Night as this is my favourite of Shakespeare's plays and Viola is probably my favourite character. I'm less fond of The Tempest, but I have never seen it performed, so perhaps should (although I was given a radio performance which starred Patrick Stewart as Caliban for my OU course). It is one of the few Shakespeare plays which includes an obvious use of magic.
Nottingham is my preferred destination for a long weekend with
bateleur. I went to university there (a long time ago now) and always loved the city. Additionally it has Wollaton Hall and the attached park (with deer) where I set a number of my roleplaying campaigns (Mage, Witchcraft and some of Postcards). We may go on our wedding anniversary (early July), but it is now more likely that we will travel up in September. Either way, we will need to agree dates with the grannies (who may be put off after seeing the newly-mobile food-throwing duo in just over a week). Like The Black Lion Hotel last December, it is likely to involve lots of eating, drinking and sleeping.
Apart from dreaming of future events and mopping up baby food I have mostly been planning a couple of one-off games for the approaching holiday and replaying various computer games (including MOO-2-BAA and Boddler's Gate). The writing is on hold until after I get back from the Lakes.
