Not to a dictionary, but to my baby daughter who has started to show more than a passing interest in conversation.
If you say "clap" to her (no accompanying gestures, please !) she will clap her hands together and smile. If you show her a cat (either a picture cat or the Emily), she meows (OK, that's probably my fault).
Bea is also taking more of an interest in the CBeebies channel. I often switch the television on when I want to keep them amused and I'm not at the computer (usually when I do the washing up). Ryan likes the TV for background noise, but Bea watched avidly and complains if you switch off during her favourite shows.
Bea's preferred viewing :
Teletubbies (everyone can name them)
Tweenies (I can now name them)
Bits and Bobs (she likes the "Trogging along" song)
Bea's "vaguely interested" shows :
Fimbles (I can't yet name them - hurrah !)
Storymakers - particularly if it is a "Blue Cow" story (at least it has the Cat from Red Dwarf to increase its "Cool" factor)
The Shiny Show (with its dodgy "give yourself a shiny" catchphrase)
The shows Bea ignores :
Ballamory (although she watches the intro with the coloured houses)
Clifford the Big (Moralising) Red Dog
Noddy (now a politically correct version)
Pingu
Come Outside (the one with the spotty plane and the dog)
Plus a few that I can't (yet) name.
Ryan, in contrast, is still of the opinion that nothing beats reaching for objects he's not allowed.
