A watchable Buffy episode and a great Angel episode.

First Date

The best part about First Date was Principal Wood. A good character with an interesting plot development at the end. Xander's date, in contrast, suffered from the "we've seen this too many times already" problem. OK, that may have been a deliberate choice on the part of the writers, but it was still a bad choice. Also, what's with Giles ? The Buffy gang have always combined dating with slaying. I thought he got over that back in season two.

The Andrew development was nice, but The First was looking a bit desperate. After all - Buffy has already killed one of those super-vampires, what good would another one really be ? Does the Biggest Bad Ever have a "grand plan" problem already ? Oh, and I was personally delighted to see that it was Jonathan this week instead of Warren.

Salvage

For me, the episode was truly great just for the "jailbreak" scene alone. The appearance of Faith was extremely welcome and even the bits without her were pretty good. Wesley and Lilah was nicely done; not too long, but essentially signing off their relationship. The destruction of The Beast was appropriate, although why Cordelia had give it back its dagger (at a convenient moment for Angelus to pick it up) remained unexplained (probably forever). Now the situation is the gang vs Angelus and evil Cordy. A much better standoff.

In other news, Mike liked the twins and they seemed to like him. He is vanishing from the continent pretty soon; so it was good to see him before he left. We discussed the game he had run based on the first three books of Jordan's "Wheel of Time". By the way, does anyone know when/if the series will end ? Apparently Jordan has been quoted as saying that he has an ending planned, but not when (as far as we could tell).

Admittedly, I never even started it. Initially players were banned from reading it and when the game finished I still wasn't keen. Why ? Because I don't like starting a series without an ending, in case the author never finishes it. Having already been stung by Wurts' Mistwraith saga (supposed to be five books, currently six are out and it looks likely that at least another six will be needed), I didn't fancy starting anything else.

And only twenty-nine days left to the second week-long abandoning of the twins.
