The New Year started well; Ryan & Beatrice have settled back into their old sleeping patterns (a 9am start), the electrical repair is working, and [livejournal.com profile] triskellian & [livejournal.com profile] smiorgan came for dinner.

Having people in the house who talk back (other than saying "Egg") is becoming something of a novelty for me and it was really good to see them both. They had spent New Year's Eve at Templars, along with most of the other East Oxford roleplayers. We talked about the party, and I asked after all the people I have not seen in over a year. Apparently everyone is getting on OK, but I'm now pretty keen to travel to Oxford myself and actually see people in person (rather than just hearing about them).

[livejournal.com profile] bateleur made curry which we had with a white wine (brought by [livejournal.com profile] smiorgan - whose taste in wines I like) and then finished with chocolate & coconut ice cream and port. [livejournal.com profile] triskellian was driving, but wanted port so she had a small glass (and told [livejournal.com profile] smiorgan he was driving next time !). The conversation covered a vast range of topics including themed weddings (eg. the guests all dressed Reservoir Dogs style), tattoos ([livejournal.com profile] frax and I will actually get tattooed this year !), Live Journal and families.

My "things to do" list now contains a note to organise visiting Oxford some time in the next couple of months. [livejournal.com profile] triskellian offered to put us up if we stayed overnight.

Meanwhile, the twins seem to be happy despite the lack of doting grandparents, aunts and uncles (OK, so they barely saw their uncles). Ryan has managed to climb the first step of the stairs whilst Beatrice is making some heroic-yet-unsuccessful attempts at crawling. The only downside is that they are fighting over the musical snail (thirty tracks - played at random) and consequently my days are currently filled with half-finished nursery rhymes.

In other news, I have finally finished Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow. Frances bought it for me when I was in hospital, at the end of 2001, and I lost it when I first came home (only a few chapters in). I finally found it again a few weeks ago and I finished it over Christmas. I enjoyed it, but I'll leave out a review as [livejournal.com profile] venta did one a few weeks ago.

in a word, yum!

you are making my tummy growly.

In the US, that book was published as Smilla's Sense of Snow. I read it ages ago, but mostly I remember that it was oddly flat. There may be a new, better translation.
