The Titanic Duck

I have been in Northern Ireland for the last couple of days on a visit (to HMP Magilligan). This meant staying overnight in the Stormont Hotel. This hotel is one of a chain where they leave you a bath duck - with their chain name - as a present (despite mostly only having showers in the rooms). This visit, they had changed the duck from a suited one to a "Captain of the Titanic" themed duck (because the city is the home of Titanic Belfast). Here is a picture of one. I brought my duck home and gave it to Bea.

Today I was telling my colleagues about it. One of them listened to the story and said: "I don't know how to put this delicately, but, does this duck... float?"

There is probably something obvious I'm missing, but why was your colleague saying "I don't know how to put this delicately"?

In this case, delicately means carefully avoiding offending me. Although he's joking - because he knows that the Titanic isn't a tragedy that affected me personally.
