Hearing Tests

Ryan and Beatrice went along to Hounslow for hearing test number three today (eight months - their adjusted age). The test itself works on distraction. The baby sits unsupported on its parent's lap for the test. One of the two doctors plays with toys in front of the baby whilst the other makes noises behind it. The idea is that the baby will turn to face the noise to find out what it is.
The second part of the test involved sticking monitors in the baby's ear and checking the middle ear. Again, the baby sits on the parent's lap for this.
Ryan (and Dom)
Problem number 1 : Beatrice decided that this was a good moment to smile and chat. I had to take her out fairly quickly so as not to disturb Ryan any further.
Problem number 2 : Ryan got the whole idea rather too quickly. Consequently he stopped looking behind himself after a while, 'cos he knew it was just the second doctor making all the noises.
Problem number 3 : When having his first ear monitored, Ryan wanted to take a more active role in the whole procedure - by eating the cables. When he was stopped he burst into tears and refused to have his second ear checked.
Beatrice (and Me)
Problem number 1 : Bea can't sit unsupported. So I had to support her whilst not restricting her movement.
Problem number 2 : Bea has always been more interested in people than in sounds. Consequently she didn't really want to look away whilst she had a nice doctor sitting in front of her to smile at.
Half an hour later the verdict was clear - they need another test (and this one was already a repeat 'cos the first "eight month" one was set by their actual age - ie. three months too early). However, the doctors commented that it can't be much later or the babies will get wise to the whole idea of where the sounds come from. Sadly, we think Ryan (and possibly Bea as well) has already reached that stage.
