Here's my usual Heroes write-up from BBC3 last night - the penultimate episode of season four.
Details: Two main plotlines this week with a couple of other threads.
Main plotline one is Bennett's past brought to Claire's attention through the mirror man, Damien at Samuel's request. Turns out that he used to be married and his pregnant wife was killed by a "special". Revenge brought him to the Company and they suggested his marriage to Sandra. Claire is horrified and upset to learn this, but points out to Samuel that he couldn't have killed Lydia or she would have been shown it. She insists that Samuel give her Noah back - and he does, sending her to him in a caravan which Samuel then buries.
The second main plotline is Peter's rescue of Sylar. Then meet in the empty mind place and Peter fails to get them home. Sylar says that three years have passed before Peter arrived and then a further month passes before Peter will again talk to him. When Sylar eventually admits that he didn't want to leave because he deserved his punishment, but is ready to help now - a wall appears. They theorise that they need to break through it to leave. However it is several more "mind years" before Peter gives up his anger at Sylar killing Nathan, admitting to Sylar that he realised that Sylar was a changed man but felt losing his anger would be betraying Nathan. With the anger gone, the wall can be broken and both awake - half a day has passed in practice (and Matt has finished the wall).
The other threads include Lauren being treated by Emma, who then betrays her to Samuel despite Lauren telling her that Samuel is responsible for killing his people. Samuel sends Eli after Lauren, but she eludes him. He then announces his intention to go to Central Park, but tells Eli to go after (I think two) people who Lydia has said will hinder him. Eli then shows at Matt's as Peter and Sylar exit the basement.
General comments: On the one hand, this episode is filler which is a bit frustrating given that it's the penultimate episode. On the other hand, it's damn good filler.
The stuff with Bennett, whilst a touch contrived, makes for a better flashback than the season three crap, as it's stuff you couldn't entirely have guessed at. Plus it was nice to see Thompson again (pity we didn't get Claude as well). Also Claire's reaction, and her comments to Samuel afterwards about how he (ie. Samuel) expected to be her hero are pretty good self-awareness following earlier episodes (seasons 1-3) of how Peter was her hero. She is still an idiot though, she created his opportunity to do this and, even at the end, didn't wonder why Samuel sent her to Noah.
The wall plot with Sylar and Peter is a touch too linked to forgiveness, but it does at least make sense in context (in contrast with Hiro's cure in Pass/Fail earlier this season). And I'm rather looking forward to seeing these two work together - I can't help feeling that Eli is so, so doomed! I'm wondering to what extent Sylar has his powers though. And a side note - Matt finished the wall after Peter passed out?!
Otherwise, Emma's an idiot and I'm glad Lauren got away. I am wondering who will be in the last episode now - Tracey's a given, but what about Hiro, Ando and Matt?
Character by character:
Themes: Redemption!
Refer back moments: Thompson, Claude and Sandra. I was somewhat sorry that Peter didn't reference the other "redeemed" Sylar he knew from I Am Become Death, but I guess that was a naff episode.
Continuity errors and other weirds: Here's my rant coming up... so, Lydia told Samuel that Peter and Sylar were coming to the Carnival? I can just about accept that as part of an exchange with him to persuade him to follow Claire's plan, but I can't believe she also told him to find them at Matt's house. And, from her death scene, she'd obviously not been forced (previously) by Samuel to give up any any information, so he can't have got it that way. And, if that wasn't bad enough, Eli's opening statement is something like "sorry to break up the love fest". This only makes sense if you've been watching the inner-mind pieces of the episode as it can't be gleaned from Peter and Sylar's brief exchange in the real work. In other words, the writer of this episode Was Crap.

Character by character:
- Claire - Utterly fed-up of her animosity stuff with Noah (yet again). Or, indeed, the lack of any recognition of her own role in Samuel being able to reach this point. However, nice line about Samuel being her hero.
- Noah - Liked early Noah. However, the exchange with Gretchen did seem unlikely given all the history and Claire being pissed at him, but made Gretchen's responses to Claire an episode or so ago seem much more plausible.
- Samuel - I still don't understand why some many people still support him; Eli and now Damien. After all, Damien must have been aware that Lydia's death wasn't on Noah's conscience.
- Sylar - I think he'll be more interesting without powers than with, but we'll see which it is next episode.
- Peter - The passing of several years in his head makes him getting past Nathan's death more plausible.

Date: 2010-04-26 08:54 pm (UTC)As I pointed out yesterday, brick walls aren't known for exploding. Pretty much no matter what he did to that wall, doing the same to Eli has got to be some good.
Plus, what's Eli going to do? As far as I can tell his power is that he has sinister eyebrows. (Well OK, all of him have sinister eyebrows - but that doesn't make it much stronger.)
