Last night's BBC 3 Heroes offering.

Details: Three main plotlines.

Main plot one is Nathan's wake. Angela asks Claire to offer Peter a shoulder to cry on as she's scared he's bottling up grief and will go after Sylar. It quickly becomes apparent that Peter has not been able to grieve, he doesn't want to stop and think about it, and he goes after a homicidal office worker attempting to help. Peter does mostly talk the guy down, bur is shot in the process. Claire gives him her healing power, but only after talking some sense into him. They then reminisce on a roof top; Peter promises not to lie to Claire and she calls her ex West so that Peter can copy his power as a tribute to Nathan.

The second main plot is Edgar turning up at Noah's place (Claire asks Noah not to go to the funeral as she doesn't want to see him at the moment because of his role in Sylar-Nathan). Noah captures Edgar and then he and Lauren consider how to get Edgar to help them. After Lauren urges talking over torture Noah hears what happened to Edgar. However, whilst initially agreeing to help, Edgar leaves with all the maps after he realises that Noah and Lauren regard the Carnival as a cult rather than only Samuel as the problem.

The third plot is Sylar turning up at the Carnival and attempting to kill Samuel. Samuel subdues him, although realising that Sylar failed in the first place to make the killing blow. Lydia uses her ability to determine that Sylar is afraid to die alone whilst Sylar takes hers and determines she want to use him to get Samuel. Sylar then goes to Samuel and asks for ink to determine where to go next whilst Samuel tries to talk him round telling him about his love Vanessa and how he and Sylar are alike, they are not wholly evil and want not to be loners. However, on using the ink, Sylar does not get a tattoo of the carnival but of Claire and goes off to see her.

General comments: Very slow. The whole Peter's grief plot should have been a sub-thread to an episode, not the main viewing. In many ways this episode was a vivid reminder of how little actual plot is floating around this season (eg. what plot do Matt, Angela or Ando have? None!). Perhaps it's in part because the writers like putting out little webisodes and comics and things - they've left too few stories for the main show.

The Edgar thread was pretty awesome - mostly because of Edgar and Lauren; I do wish that the writers would put down the whole "HRG protects Claire" thing and give him something else to focus on. One season of that was good, but it's really irritating now.

Sylar going after Claire is interesting - but I can't help feeling it's to give Claire something else to do so that they can continue to put her in each episode. Maybe there'll be a point to it though, so I'll wait and see.

Peter and Claire always make good viewing and they've had few scenes together since season one (there's a couple in the volume Villains, but still). Also it was nice to see Angela in screen for more than a sentence. I wonder what the future does hold for her relationship with Peter after this particular lie - although he seemed far more forgiving than Claire about it.

Finally, in a rare moment of not being irritated by Sylar this season, I almost cheered when he attacked Samuel.

Character by character:
  • Claire - Still dull. And her interactions with Peter were too old for her character, even given all the growing up she's had to do.
  • Noah - His stuff with Lauren is great, but he so needs to abandon Daddy mode.
  • Samuel - Vanessa is an interesting subplot; pity it's only just turned up.
  • Peter - I liked some of his stuff (eg. on the rooftop - "I have a love/hate relationship with roofs"), but there was too much of the grief thing in terms of dominating the episode. I was also slightly dubious about the whole "ex-hospice nurse unable to cope with grief" thing.
  • Angela - Hopefully this is the start of her actually appearing occasionally.
  • Sylar - Hope they're going somewhere interesting with this.
Title: Grief; and literally for both Peter and Claire (and arguably Edgar).

Themes: Homes and families again. Similarities between people.

Refer back moments: Nathan's sons made the cast list again (although I missed them on-screen, I assume they were at the wake). Also, there was a rare refer-back-to-season-two moment with West (I think that the writers loathe two as they never got to do it properly because of the strike). There was a reference to Hiro telling Sylar he would die alone (Once Upon A Time In Texas) and I wonder whether Sylar will ever find out that Hiro was referring to his fake death (although, perhaps for Sylar this doesn't matter because he's worried about it happening anyway).

Continuity errors and other weirds: I did think someone should have referenced the hospice nurse angle with this episode (although not to Peter's face). Will Claire's picture on Sylar's arm ever have a decent (or even awesome) explanation? Oh, yeah, and why is Sylar only now worried by Hiro's "dying alone" comment when it was made even before he killed Jackie?

I would have cheered for both that and when Samuel shredded him... if I thought for a moment that they didn't both have de-facto immunity to death.

there was a rare refer-back-to-season-two moment with West

It made me so happy that we didn't actually see him. If only all duff characters would stay offscreen so obligingly!

but it's real irritating now

I think you mean "really". The Americans are getting to you!

I've changed it to "really" now.

I would have cheered for both that and when Samuel shredded him... if I thought for a moment that they didn't both have de-facto immunity to death.

Well, indeed. Another thing that annoys me is that Sylar now seems to have the "empathy" power. Despite it being hot favourite in the "worst thing to have been considered in the Villains volume" category.

Ah, yes. In fact that doesn't even make sense to me. But they cheat so much I can't work out if they've screwed up (again) or I've just missed some way he might have picked it up.
