Last night's BBC 3 Heroes offering.

Details: With a title like that, there has to be a heavy Nathan-Peter component. And there is. They arrive at Nathan's office to discover that Angela has covered Nathan's absence and sent the Haitian to mind-wipe them. Except the Haitian isn't happy about this and instead gives Peter an address and tells him if he wants to know more to go alone, but that the knowledge will be terrible. Somewhat unsurprisingly, Peter doesn't go alone, and they find Nathan's body. Nathan/Sylar touches this and sees images from last season's finale, including an angry Matt. The upshot being that they seek Matt out, heal him and then he's horrified by their presence. He tells them the truth and to avoid him, but Sylar switches with him and entices Nathan close enough that they touch when someone else comes in surprising them. At the end of the episode, Nathan asks Peter if he can really cope with knowing that he's Sylar. A question left hanging for next (I hope next) week.

Hiro is sent by Samuel to stop Mohinder destroying a tape from Coyote Sands (although not to save Mohinder). We then get a flashback (to Mohinder being back with Meena from Seven Minutes to Midnight in season one) and discover that Mohinder looked at the tape and discovered that Samuel not only has an unbalanced power, but that it quadratically increases the more other heroes are around him. Mohinder also constructs a proto-type compass to find Samuel as it turns out that all Heroes emit some sort of wave. Mohinder arrives at the carnival to meet Joseph (our first sighting) and Joseph tells him that Samuel must not know the increase aspect of this power and that Mohinder must destroy the tape. Mohinder does, but Samuel was listening and turns up; then he kills Mohinder in annoyance about the tape. Of course, Hiro changes all that, rescuing the tape and Mohinder (bullet proof jacket). However, he then places Mohinder in a mental asylum because Mohinder refuses to lay low until Charlie is safe. Samuel, of course, does not return Charlie.

Tracey considers joining the carnival and the stress of the decision (What? This woman worked in politics! She eats stress for breakfast!) means she loses control of her abilities and goes to see Bennett for help. What follows is a gratuitous meet-up with Claire (again doing laundry), including a Tracey-in-the-bath scene and ends with Claire suggesting that maybe the Carnival is a good thing. Oh and Bennett shows up at the end to raise eyebrows at them both. OK, I admit I wasn't impressed with the third unnecessary Claire appearance this season.

Anything else? Oh yeah. Matt is now healed, is Sylar-free and uses his ability to get out of the hospital.

General comments: A huge plus - that they actually managed to explain most of the things bugging me including: why the Carnival is only now taking lots of new people, who Joseph was, what happened to Mohinder, Samuel's motivation for wanting more people. I'll repeat what I said last week with a slightly different emphasis - this is now my favourite episode of the season to date. There was actual speed, plot movement and more than a minimal number of characters. OK, Claire's appearance was the third this season to look like "let's put the twenty-year-old blonde in every episode", but otherwise good. I loved the stuff between Peter and Nathan and that it's heading towards some sort of resolution. I also liked seeing Mohinder again (welcome back Mohinder and Mohinder music!). Plus - the Haitian again. On the less good side, personality-Sylar survived (although at least this means we keep Matt). Also on the negatives - it seems to have reverted to season two with Peter, Mohinder and Hiro competing for least wise action (taking Nathan at once against the Haitian's orders, looking at the tape and giving Samuel the tape before getting Charlie back respectively). I also ought to mention [livejournal.com profile] bateleur's criticism of Peter taking Nathan's power before healing Hiro, as Jeremy is now dead.

Character by character:
  • Claire - Gratuitous appearance, let's move on.
  • Noah - Blink and you miss him.
  • Tracey - Whilst I thought that the actress did a good job, these scenes were unnecessary as she looked pro-Carnival at the end of the last episode she was in.
  • Matt - Glad he's back and Sylar-less.
  • Nathan/Sylar - Glad he's still in control; although I guess it won't be for long. Although it raises the question of how submerged Sylar now is and whether Nathan will have any permanency. I guess there was a small hint that Sylar is underneath when he threw Peter against the wall (that said, Nathan tried to beat Peter to death in the fire back at the end of Villains because he was cross about losing the formula)
  • Samuel - Dangerous and power mad. Plus [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and I now reckon that he led Denko to Joseph.
  • Peter - Was a bit slow in this episode. As soon as Matt explains about Nathan/Sylar, what's left to fit in?
  • Hiro - Too trusting, but I'm pleased he saved Mohinder.
  • Mohinder - I liked Meena's reappearance as well as Mohinder's. Also, the teaching stuff in India seemed very likely as his task/destination after Coyote Sands.
Title: One of the better ones.

Themes: Brothers.

Refer back moments: Meena of course. Also, the actor who played Chandra in 1961. And Coyote Sands in general. The Haitian acting on his own (again, in favour of Peter after trying to help him (OK, by memory-wiping him!) in Four Months Ago and offering to shoot Arthur in Our Father).

Continuity errors and other weirds: I'm even more convinced that the Samuel-testing-Peter sequence was for a plotline that got altered as the season went along. As he's got no need to test Peter's "goodness". Also, another weird is how little Angela and Ando have had to do this season, despite the smallest cast to date.
