Heroes episode 25 (episode 2 of season 2).

Summary: Peter is taken back to the smugglers' home (a pub), beaten up and interrogated (about missing IPods). When the smugglers depart to inform their employer that there's a problem, the employer's son arrives and attacks the smuggler leader's sister, Caitlin. Peter, having escaped from his bonds through use of Phasing, saves her and is treating her injuries when the others return. The leader says Peter is to help them with a new, bigger job to square things with the now-furious employer. In exchange he offers everything Peter was carrying when they found him - which includes his first name that they now use. Claire learns that lizards can regenerate in her biology class and asks questions - which draws further interest from West. After her father refuses to consider testing her ability further she takes a step herself; cutting off her toe and then watching it regrow. However, she realises West has seen her, runs out of the house to find him nowhere, but the Suresh book, which he said he would lend her, on the ground. Mohinder starts at the company and is immediately sent after a Hero dying of the virus - which turns out to be the Haitian. At first it seems that, on curing him, Mohinder has his memory taken; but after a conversation with Bennet it instead becomes apparent that this was staged and the Haitian and Bennet are reunited. Bennet also sees the picture of Kaito's death in the paper and reveals to Sandra that this was predicted by Isaac through a painting - the first of a series of eight. Matt is brought in to investigate Haito's death and meets Ando who tells him that the symbol means "Godsend" and that Hiro is missing. Angela's fingerprint is found on the photo and she is interrogated during which she reveals that she and Kaito were once lovers. She also recognises Matt's mind-reading ability quickly - suggesting she's seen it before. Nathan is called in as her lawyer despite her not wanting to see him "she has no-one else". However, when Matt and Nathan are talking, Angela is attacked in her room, Matt breaks through the screen to get to her to find no-one there. Hiro tries to get Takezo Kensei to help the Swordsmith's daughter, fails, so does it himself wearing the armour and mask. He then tells Takezo Kensei who, initially skeptical that Hiro would leave him the credit, agrees to continue, only to be shot dead by the Kensais that Hiro defeated earlier. However, Takezo Kensei reveals himself to be a Hero with regeneration when he recovers from the wounds. Finally, Maya and Alejandro get help from their old nurse to cross the border from Guatemala to Mexico (they started in Honduras). At her house Maya is seen by a healer who tells her she is cursed and can not be cured. On crossing the border without Alejandro, Maya panicks and shows her ability to kill people on camera - she cries black tears. However, Alejandro appears unaffected and his own eyes briefly go black as he appears to absorb the blackness and it brings their nurse back to life. However the nurse then runs away, saying that they are both cursed and evil.

Comments: Not a bad episode, but I found it (mildly) disappointing on a rewatch. The trouble is, there isn't much new material; it's primarily a continuation of the previous episode, but without any big surprises (plus no outstanding lines from anyone). The first series, in contrast, has at least one new twist in every episode. The new information in Lizards is that the virus is spreading, that Takezo Kensei has healing, that Alejandro appears able to reverse the effects of Maya's "curse", that the killer attacking the previous generation appears able to travel through walls, that there is another series of Isaac paintings, oh, and that Angela and Kaito once had an affair. None of these are show-stoppers and all moderately easy to guess to some degree. I suppose Peter having phasing also counts - he was a long distance from DL, so I guess he may have the "locate person" ability and all the rest too. On the subject of abilities, this episode seems more of a revisiting - phasing isn't new and neither is regeneration, but they've now been given to different characters. Exploring regeneration looks more promising. In short, this episode probably belongs to Mr Muggles - it's the one where he gets to watch the dog show on TV, plus, when West disappears, he barks skywards and jumps in the air several times.

Cast list absences: Same as for the previous episode - Niki, Micah, DL and Sylar. Only brief appearances from Ando and Nathan.

Continuity issues raised: Nothing much so far. The new "series of eight" is a bit iffy, because there wasn't a sign or a mention of them from Isaac in season one. However, it's passable. What happens with the Suresh book may qualify though - as Zack gave Claire a copy in season one (she was reading it in Homecoming when he came tapping on her window); depending on what she says about it later.

Claire: The bit where she gets her car stolen is rather sad, plus, isn't it insured? Would Mr Bennet seriously (let his daughter) own a car which wasn't insured? The regeneration is interesting and could definitely be taken further. Also, the business with rescuing the ring from the boiling eggs in front of her mother is good - a reminder that Sandra now knows, and isn't entirely comfortable with it.

West: Well, he's big on the prospect of genetics for understandable reasons. Not much else to say.

Mr Bennet/Haitian: Brief, but good stuff. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the company will be brought down. Plus I always like appearances from the Haitian.

Matt/Nathan: Not a bad interaction and they make a good partnership.

Ando/Hiro's father: Rather brief, but good. I also liked it that he and Matt met.

Hiro/Takezo Kensei: So was Hiro really Takezo Kensai (ie. the story stuff)? I like the idea, but hope that they don't string it out too much now that the possibility has become clear to the audience.

Mohinder/Bob: Still great to see Mohinder fooling the company.

Angela: In many ways, she's got the most interesting plot so far this season (with the exception of the Bennet/Mohinder attack on the company). Her comment that they are being attacked out of revenge because "we did something terrible" is intriguing. Glad she didn't die. Odd that Nathan observes that his mother doesn't have anyone - has she lost her friends since season one or was she always completely focussed on family? Or was it that her friends were Deveaux, Linderman and/or Haito?

Peter: So, phasing gets added to his list of abilities. Plus, will the smuggler leader keep his word and only involve Peter for one job?

Twins: I love the idea of a two-person power. Hope that they make more of this.
