Distractions
Jul. 11th, 2009 08:18 pmEpisode 14.
Summary: Sylar escapes the company and goes after Claire. He finds Sandra instead and, after getting her to let him (stay) in the house, begins to worry her and then attacks her. Mr Bennett and the Haitian come to her rescue and remove her memory, also wiping knowledge of her agreement with Claire that the latter can bunk school. Claire arranges to bunk school with Zack on the pretext of visiting an aquarium for a school project, but in fact to meet her biological mother, Meredith. She and Meredith demonstrate to each other their abilities and, as she is leaving, Claire asks after her father. Meredith tells her to wait for next time, but then rings her father - who turns out to be Nathan. Hiro and Ando have to persuade Hiro's father (and Hiro's sister) to leave them to continue their quest rather than return to Tokyo where Hiro is the heir to the company. Hiro's father rips up Isaac's painting in disgust during their exchanges. Finally, Hiro comes up with a plan and convinced his father that his elder sister is the rightful heir to the company and its values. His father then leaves him to continue. Simone shows up at Isaac's loft and asks him to find Peter. Later on she returns to find a picture of the two of them together and goes to the roof to find him. They act out the scene in the painting after Simone tells Isaac she believes in him, then go to dinner; unaware that Peter and Claude are watching them. Claude is trying to teach Peter to control his abilities, firstly by seeing whether Peter can hold on to invisibility in his absence. As Peter explains his failure, Claude becomes convinced that it is Peter's attachments to others that is causing the problem and takes him to see Simone whilst she is unaware of him. Upset by what he sees, Peter still refuses to agree with Claude's approach whereupon the latter throws him off the building in an attempt to force him to fly. Instead Peter falls but then regenerates, then realises that Claude's approach is wrong for him and that he needs to remember people and not shut them out.
Comments: There's a big 'incompetent younger sibling' thread this week; Hiro's older sister shows up (the better heir to his father's company), Niki talks about her sister Jessica (who also comes across as being the elder from this description, and the better piano player) and Claude susses that Peter was the younger, less valued son to his own father. I liked that aspect of this episode - I like the way that Heroes approaches family relationships more than the way it tackles romantic relationships as a general rule. On the cast list, this is a rare episode because it is missing Mohinder. There's no Matt (or Ted) either, no DL plus only a brief glimpse of Nathan and Micah. However, lots more George Takei and Christopher Eccleston.
Cast list absences: Mohinder, Matt, Ted and DL. Brief glimpses of Nathan and Micah..
Claire/Zack/Meredith/Nathan: Zack's stuff is great, particularly the way he cuts off her "exit strategy". Also, Claire/Meredith is nice as is Claire's correct instincts about the other half of her parentage (whilst considering Meredith's trailer): "I thought they would have a penthouse in New York" (he effectively does). And the Nathan twist is wonderful, an excellent touch.
Hiro/Ando: As ever, their lines are good: "Your father looks cross." "My father always looks cross." Also Hiro's plan is a smart one and it's nice to see him pull it off.
Sylar/Sandra/Mr Muggles/Mr Bennett/Haitian: A pretty good pairing this (Sylar/Sandra) and I liked the scene where Sylar starts talking about Claire's "talents" and Sandra gradually realises the danger. Mr Bennett and the Haitian are brief, but good as well. One last thing - for a man previously declared dead, Sylar is back on his feet really quickly.
Peter/Claude: The training is rather nice as it's a real insight into how it might be done. The scene with Simone is a bit of a shame because it's kinda predictable - that the one time she's followed happens to be a bad moment (you can almost hear someone muttering about eavesdroppers never hearing anything good about themselves in the background). One interesting aspect is that Peter appears to favour healing over flying - I did wonder whether this was coincidental (because it suited the plot) or whether it was to underline that he had more in common with Claire (now revealed as his niece) than his ambitious brother. Finally, good quote from Claude which goes something like "I see people for what they truly are... selfish, deceitful and gassy."
Niki/Jessica: I think this is my favourite Niki/Jessica sequence to date - lovely switch and nice chat with the psychiatrist beforehand. Also, good to see her finally out of there. Heroes is fond of imprisoning people and it's dull after an episode or two. Not to mention - we now get to see Jessica in action for future episodes.
Isaac/Simone: It's the closest these two have been since the start, and yet... still not very close. On the one hand they embrace and "go off for dinner", on the other, they don't kiss and Isaac is painting in his loft, alone, later that same evening. I never knew how much Simone was supposed to still be choosing between Peter and Isaac, but I always had the impression that Isaac was over after the second episode. One nice scene though - Isaac realising that Peter is invisible and then Mr Bennett making it clear that he knows Claude.
