Better Halves
May. 24th, 2009 02:26 pmEpisode 6.
Summary: This episode starts with Peter in Isaac's apartment answering the phone to Hiro and Ando. The main part of it is DL's return and the development of Jessica, ending with him realising that she was responsible for framing him, him then knocking her out and running off with both Micah and the suitcase. Hiro and Ando get collected by High Roller before they can leave Vegas for New York and are then forced to play cards until the game is interrupted. Mohinder leaves for India having totally discounted Peter and Eden is revealed to be working for Mr Bennett when she phones him (at the end of the episode she calls on Isaac). The other part of the action involves Claire's fake bio-parents showing up and being normal. The episode finishes with Niki lying on the floor.
Previous comments: So Eden's a bad? Or is Claire's dad simply another faction? I'm starting to wish that they'd join the existing heroes up a bit more quickly. Also - interesting that Niki's other has a name of her own.
In more detail: I'm trying to decide whether I'm less keen on this episode than on most or it just happens to be less interesting on a re-watch because it is dependent on surprises. The stuff with Eden is all excellent, but I'm tired of the gambling stuff by now and the Niki stuff doesn't interest me that much. Also, having now written this up in my usual style, I realise that there are fewer characters kicking around than usual (no Nathan, no Matt, no Sylar and not much Peter or Mohinder either) and therefore fewer plotlines (and, consequently, it doesn't help that I dislike two of the plotlines in the episode). The best line is "I have a sword!" and a close second is Hiro pretending to be light saber-wielding afterwards.
Character absences: Nathan, Matt, Sylar and Simone. Brief appearances from Peter and Mohinder.
Claire/Zack/Mr Bennett: Zack's suggestion that he knocks the bio-parents into something on the way out to see if they heal is great. That the bio-parents are fake is also very nice. I felt this was also a "Claire's mum" episode as she was less Mr Muggles obsessed and I loved her comments "Should we be eavesdropping? OK, I guess we have nothing else to do".
Hiro/Ando: The best part about this (other than the sword stuff at the start) is that, on a rewatch, I can hear "Who invited her?" and therefore know it's a Jessica tie-up. I missed that line at the time. Although Hiro/Ando is also good for the line "You don't need to have a superpower to be a hero".
Peter/Isaac: There's not much of this, but the realisation about the panels and the comic book effect is nice. Also Isaac's sarcasm about Simone wanting to hear about the guy from the future is among his few good bits. Oh, and Isaac now spotting the tattoo on the Niki picture is good as well.
Eden/Mohinder, Eden/Mr Bennett and Eden/Isaac: Eden is the main reason for watching this episode. I loved her and Mohinder and loved that she was a kind of bad. Her line to Mr Bennett about the cheerleader and his reaction is good as well.
Niki/DL/Micah: The best part about this trio is discovering what DL's power is - very cool. That said, much as this is my least favourite plotline, the actress is very good at the Niki/Jessica stuff and I think I was suitably impressed that Jessica had framed DL the first time around. However, even the first time around, I found the domestic stuff dull.
