A fruit bowl

bateleur explained to a sceptical Bea that fruit used to be an expensive gift. Which is why the Prince gives it to Cinderella's ugly sisters when he marries her.

Even knowing all that, I still can't see a fruit bowl as really Xmassy. I've evidently been corrupted by modern approaches to the festival.

In other news, I'm doing well out of the M and S 20 per cent off days. A new pink top (admired by Bea) and some black combat trousers (admired by bateleur) plus a wine bottle with a pair of shiny green cat eyes on it.

I love the scene in the Godfather II when a young and poor Robert De Niro brings home a carefully wrapped single pear for his family and his wife which is much admired.
