For the win - one correct guess to me.

Ryan has drawn a two-sided picture. On one side is a sad face, with tears and the mouth turned down at the corners. On the other side is a happy, smiling face. He explained these to [livejournal.com profile] bateleur:
"The boy is sad. His mummy isn't here."
"The boy is happy. His mummy has come home from work."

Guilt-trippery. From the one in the household that I can't really explain it all to. (Well, apart from the Ems. And she can't draw.)

Yeah. Particularly as he has a point.

I daresay I'll cope. :-)

I've been on the other side of that one, actually.

As a child, there were days when I never saw my father; he would go out to work before I got up, and come home after I'd gone to bed. Even when he did get home while I was still awake, he'd often be on the phone until gone my bedtime.

And yes, it made me sad. But I didn't blame him, not really. I just accepted it as a force of nature. And it did mean that getting to actually spend time with my Dad was the bestest and most wonderful thing in the entire world.

Today, I've forgotten almost all the detail of my childhood. But I still remember my Dad unexpectedly picking me up from school as one of the best things that ever happened to me.

So... there are consolations.

For some reason that reminds me... I still remember finishing exams and Dom and Dawn being there to meet me (this was after they moved to london and although I don't recall for sure I presume when they both had jobs). I won't class it as "bestest thing ever" but given they are the only two people I specifically remember being there I figure it had a good impact on my mind. :)

Just a random aside there (and now hoping it wasn't something I imagined due to extreme alcohol consumption). :)

I remember that too! I think we found a weird (red?) champagne in Oddbins(?) and brought it along.

:-)

That's a really sweet story. And I'm going to see their Nativity play next week - first time ever seeing one of their school things.

But that moment of joy when you come home -- surely that's a good, sweet thing!

When he was explaining the picture to me he was actually in a very cheerful mood (despite Dawn being at work at the time). Discussing the happy face he said "Mummy's home from work. Big hug. Happy boy!" (which is what he does himself).

He makes stories like this to help him wrap his mind around the way his world works, but as I explained to Dawn he isn't constantly sad whilst she's away. Indeed, he likes to spend his time drawing!

If she could, it would probably be more about empty vs full food bowls.
