I feel for you. It's disgustingly muggy and hot hot hot here in the American South (did you know that I am now officially living in the South?). I crawl from one air-conditioned spot to another. I wish I could send you an air conditioner, but after some study I think it's true that American ACs violate about a million EU environmental regulations.

Otherwise I'd send one post haste.
Stay cool. When I get desperate I stick my head in the freezer. Or take a scarf and tie a packet of frozen vegetables to your head. Not only does it work, but the neighbors will never, never ask you to just look after their kids for "a few minutes".
Maryland is in fact south of the Mason-Dixon line (http://freespace.virgin.net/john.cletheroe/usa_can/usa/mas_dix.htm), the official delineation between "us" and "them". However, it's not Deep South, which is where they lynch black people and eat Jews.
So far I have only seen a few signs that I am in fact South. They are:
Cheap collard greens/kale/mustard greens. Really. They're $1.29/lb in New York, and $.69/lb here in Maryland.
Wide availability of corn meal.
Preternaturally polite children. No foolin', the kids here say "Sir" and "Ma'am". A little boy on a skateboard nearly ran into me and stopped, turned around and said "Pardon me". I nearly died of shock. My friend Cliff, who is from Georgia (the Deep South) assures me that this is a Southern Thing.
