Before I could get jealous of [livejournal.com profile] venta's one, I got my own.

The Mother and Toddler group birthday party went well. And, thank god, that's the end of having to take in cake, food, candles and the end of panicking over whether I've taken enough or too much or all unhealthy stuff, etc...

My photos arrived back this morning. There were some nice ones of [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and my weekend away at the start of October (cows on the road!) and a rather fine silhouette of Beatrice on a tall climbing frame. Sadly, however, the rest of them (mainly Bea and Ryan's first third birthday party) are a bit rubbish (red eye, blurring, naff picture composition). However I've finished a second film (wall to wall birthday celebrations) so I'll send that off and see if anything better returns.

In other news, I'm continuing to conquer ancient China and I have to say I love playing Sun Ce just based on the intro movie sequence for him (standing back-to-back with his strategist, about to be killed when the rest of him family arrive and save him with troops and sarcasm). It doesn't quite match my enjoyment of Final Fantasy VII's "leaving the Shinra Building" FMV but then, what would?!

And today I have a gold winged lion holding a book, against a blue background with gold stars. Mmmmm, lions... :-)

Nah. Not fussed about lions. Now if it were a dragon, that'd be a different matter.

Well, I'm not really, either, but this is a Venetian lion. So it's cool 'cos it has wings, and it's 'specially cool because the whole city is packed full of lions. So they now remind me of a great holiday in a wonderful place. Hurrah!

Today I got a shepherdy dude, complete with crook and lambling.

I suspect from the overall picture on my calendar that it's going to be a fairly biblical advent for me - so the likelihood of winged lions (or indeed any other kind, except possibly one which lies with lambs) is small.

Despite the camels, weird trees and square-topped houses of the overall picture (it's a crib scene), there are some worryingly non-Judean details. As well as a full complement of shepherds, kings, cow and donkey there seem to be in attendance also a puzzled tabby cat, a chirpy rough collie, and a rather sad-looking fox. Not to mention a most unlikely coloured cockerel strutting about on the stable roof.

Except the token dark-skinned hands of a kneeling king, every character is white Caucasian (natch), and even the cow displays a worrying quantity of Jersey in her ancestry. One of the shepherds has thoughtfully brought a Davy lamp. What a jolly, happy and cheerfully coloured place that stable was, to be sure :)

Not a badger to be seen :(

I may have to get [livejournal.com profile] bateleur to draw one in for me :)

I suspect that any elements of Christianity which sneak into my advent will be there for reasons unrelated to their religiousness ;-) But at least mine all goes together and makes sense: canal, gondolas, palazzi, Byzantine art. No anachronisms here. (Is there a word which is to place what anachronism is to time?)

Wait a sec... wasn't that from Revelations ? Are we expecting a particularly apocalyptic Xmas this year ?

Er, I don't think so... the bit about every animal curling up tidily together and a little child leading them is, er, Old Testament, I think.

Aye, here we are. This was the bit I was thinking of, anyway:

Isiah 11, v6 (http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/etcbin/toccer-new2?id=KjvIsai.sgm&images=images/modeng&data=/texts/english/modeng/parsed&tag=public&part=11&division=div1).

On good days, I can spell Isaiah, too.

Nuts - you're much too quick !

(That'll teach me to search for the exact text of the misquote !)

It's also Buffy Season 1, Episode 12 (Prophecy Girl) Jenny Calendar says which Bible passage it is and Giles quotes it.

Isaiah 11 according to Mr Web. I stand corrected.

But it is post apocalyptic, which is why I assumed it was in Revelations.

Annoyingly, I can't remember much of the context, except it being a vision of Isaiah's. My homework for this weekend is obviously reading OT prophets :)

The usual test for the Revelation of St. John is, "would you have to be on acid to even consider writing this down?". If the answer is "no" then it's not our Patmosian friend's handiwork. If the answer is "yes" then it's probably him, but might be Ezekiel.
