My (personal) guidelines are: 1. Don't be in. 2. Failing that, turn the lights off, close the lounge door and hide! (The lounge is at the back of the house).
I've had one ocassion where the kids yelled "trick or treat", and I said "trick!" So they wandered off, being very confused...
I was more interested in whether it was legal still. Or what the police did about complaints (on both sides - razor blades in sweets / damage to houses).
