Today Roland Versus Sophie was ready to be collected from the bookbinders. So, idiot that I am, I trotted down the stairs hunting out my keys and glasses from my bag. Not concentrating on my footing, I missed the last couple of steps and came down very hard on my ankle.

I screamed. And screamed. I bet that Ryan was impressed that I could reached such a volume. [livejournal.com profile] bateleur came down and fetched pain killers whilst I burst into a huge flood of tears. Having fed me painkillers and got me comfortable in the lounge he then kindly drove off to collect the book himself.

He's now back and the ankle has been deemed OK enough for me not to have a boring long wait in Casualty. But I think I've scuppered my chances of making it to Mother and Toddler group tomorrow (a mile walk each way).

As an expert in such things...

1. Do not even think about walking anywhere tomorrow.
2. Your ankle will hurt more tomorrow than today. And more the day after than tomorrow. And then it will continue hurting ever worse until one day it's better. It all seems to be a bit Escher-esque.
3. Ice cubes are your friend, as is wiggling the foot a little bit occasionally so that the muscles don't stiffen up
4. Beware the Jabberwock. Possibly not entirely ankle-related, but a sound piece of advice nonetheless.

The bath is my friend too.

I'll listen out for the whiffling and burbling.

Ouch, Sympathy in spades from one with historically dodgy ankles.
Neurofen is your friend (unless you get acid reflux with it). Trust in 3 times a day neurofen for the next week and it will be less hurty.
[livejournal.com profile] lanfykins speaks truth regarding cold things and putting it up (but I'll be astounded if you manage more than 10 minutes of foot-up with the twins about...)

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] bateleur was around and today the ankle is slightly improved (although I doubt I'll be taking them out). Unless the improvement stops, I expect to be able to hobble them to playgroup tomorrow (which is closer than their Mother and Toddler groups).

Cold compress, as Sarah says.

If you have such stuff, black pepper oil (in a carrier oil, of course) on the compress may be helpful - it's reputed to bring any bruising up very quickly, but it will bring it up as just black-and-blue bruising rather than swelling.

Personally, I've never managed to injure myself sufficiently (or rather, to injure myself sufficiently in two comparable spots to allow fair testing) to test JUST how true this claim is, but it certainly does seem to be a good oil for using on aches & pains in my experience.

'Fraid not. I've got very little in the way of either conventional or non-conventional (adult) medicine (with the exception of pain killers).

but it will bring it up as just black-and-blue bruising rather than swelling

I suspect it wouldn't have stopped the swelling in this case. Not that I'm casting aspersions on its effectiveness, more that no normal human could have got it onto my ankle in the ten seconds before it swelled up!

Oh dear. That sounds nasty. Poor you. Sounds as if you're lucky it isn't broken. Hope you feel better soon.

[livejournal.com profile] bateleur said that too. I, on the other hand, know my own wussiness when it comes to pain.

It's definitely improved already. Consequently I have hopes of a speedy total recovery!

~Sympathy~

Definitely appreciated! And I like the "~"s. I think [livejournal.com profile] bateleur's recent poll (http://www.livejournal.com/poll/?id=351465) must have missed a trick there.

Ooh, bloody hell. Hope you get better soon. Look after it and don't do anything that could make it worse until it's definitely healed (I speak from personal experience). Much sympathy.

I'll try not to. I would joke about trying not to fall down the stairs again but, given how much more awkward it is to climb up and down, it isn't that much of a joke!

The Gibbon sends much sympathy. Ankles are right bastards when they go wrong.

But, at least it protects you from walking around an infinite no. of museums...
