Final Fantasy X-2

As ever, having played through Final Fantasy X-2 with
bateleur, I then went through the whole game again by myself. This meant I got to see all the things we missed the first time around, including the Happy Ending and the Perfect Ending.
FFX-2 is unlike the other FF games. Instead of being a long, linear, plotty game it is really a collection of mini-games. These range from the easy (eg. "give away the balloons") to the insanely hard (eg. "reconfigure the lightning towers"). I thought that the range of puzzles was good - from the mental to the quick reactions and I particularly enjoyed Sphere Break. However nothing hooked me quite as much as FFX's Blitzball.
I also enjoyed what plot there was (mostly surrounding the Paine, Nooj, Baralai and Gippal group), but would have liked far more. However, I thought that "Spira after Sin" was well thought out and pretty realistic. I also liked the recurrence of Maechen and Tromell (assuming I've spelt those correctly) and the scenes involving the key characters from FFX which included lengthy sequences (eg. Wakka, Kimahri and Lulu) and brief asides (eg. Seymour, Braska, Auron and Jecht). On the other hand I hated much of the "Girly Gullwing" scenes and the "Hot Spring" scenes (I saw both) left me feeling like a voyeur.
I felt that the Garment Grid / Dress Sphere set up was a great idea. Very reminiscent of FFV (which I've now started) and a lot of fun to use. I did miss the Sphere Grid though. I also liked the percentage of finished game counter. This was particularly useful when I was trying for 100 per cent.
bateleur and I sided with the "Youth League". So when I played again (using "New Game Plus") I took the "New Yevon" route. This made it easier to get 100 per cent (doing both takes you to 105-110 if perfect, so you can afford to mess up), but there was still a nail-biting finish as I wondered if the Cid-and-family conversation would move me from 99% to 100% (I really wanted the figures to the next decimal point!).
And as for the endings? Well, I liked both the Happy Ending and the Perfect Ending, although the last is probably not worth the effort. At first I thought I was not getting them, but eventually realised that they were post-credits things. Also, if I want to play again from my second game I can apparently have the "Aurochs Ace" in a blitzball team! However, I see this game going to the back of the cupboard for a long while now.
Overall - I think I prefer the other Sony Final Fantasys (ie. VII onwards), but I don't regret buying it.
In other news, Ryan is the spottiest toddler ever. It looks exceptionally painful, but he doesn't seem to mind. Bea, on the other hand, only has a few marks left.
Today is a new milestone for Beatrice. First skirt!
