Angel review
Apr. 4th, 2004 01:47 pmWatching this episode made me realise how much I had missed Cordelia Chase. Her put-downs are wonderful; not least because they are lines which no-one else could get away with in character. Most of the one-liners on Buffy and Angel are transferable, but these were not.
What else ? Nice to see Lindsey (and I blame the BBC for earlier mis-spellings of his name) back, although I found the sudden conclusion of his vendetta rather abrupt. Not to mention that his motivations - did it really boil down to 'I wanted the position Angel got and I'm sulking' ? - were disappointingly thin.
I found the twist of the tale a surprise despite, on reflection, realising that there had been clues dropped left, right and centre. Also it was good to see the Connor disappearance being explained (a little bit) under the guise that Cordelia remembered him. Plus the whole 'Was it ever Cordelia or just Jasmine ?' scenario effectively answered.
All-in-all this was one of my favourites of the season, probably my favourite to date. Not just because of Cordy and Lindsey, but because it was a genuinely up-beat moment from a season of watching Angel get depressed. The Powers-That-Be still like him enough to arrange to save him (although, admittedly, it was Cordy that they were effectively repaying), Spike is showing signs of wanting to join the gang and Angel himself is starting to think he can survive Wolfram and Hart.
OK, I'd have liked Cordelia back permanently, but there's less than half a season left now.
Btw, anyone heard any more about the "Save Angel" campaign ?

Not to mention stupid. Any of the incurably upbeat fan types round here want to come up with an excuse for why he made no attempt to stop Cordelia switching off his unnecessarily large machine of release-the-big-bad ?

Date: 2004-04-04 10:11 am (UTC)I've always liked Cordy - she added humour to the Angel series ("Well... my soul's better than yours!"), which I don't think any of the current characters can do. Lorne maybe, but he's being rather under-used atm.
Whoo! Save Angel!

Date: 2004-04-05 02:26 am (UTC)Seriously though, there isn't really an overarcing plot in Angel, though - the character was getting written out of Buffy, and it was serendipity that gave the spin-off. And who cares about the Shanshu propchecy really? Cordy's gone, SMG isn't going to guest star, and the whole benefit of the Shanshu prophecy was that Angel would finally get to do all those things he can't because he's under a curse...
At least Farscape had a bit more substance in plotline going for it.

Date: 2004-04-07 06:11 am (UTC)Only watched this yesterday (or was it the day before?) so I'm coming into the conversation a bit late... What twist in the tale? I don't remember noting anything particularly twisty in the episode...
