I've ended up using Legacy 4.0 (http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/), largely because it allows multiple parental relationships, such as adopted, fostered, illegitimate, or enter your own (such as tutored, or pet). I've ended up using it for the cast list of the Amber game (http://mrwolf.afraid.org/spilt-blood/genealogy/names.htm) I'm in.
