...and I've finished the Order of the Phoenix.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix

I definitely enjoyed the book, but, I didn't feel it contained much in the way of plot advancement. It was all really about character advancement. The addition of Luna and the development of the other five seemed to be the main theme. I thought that the prefect choices were pretty obvious and Umbridge was impressively good as the book's pantomime villain(ess). The romances in the book were light compared to last year meaning that the fans can continue to guess at the final pairings.

The main disappointment was the number of unanswered questions. We still know no more about Snape and the link between Harry and Voldemort wasn't really much of a surprise. The death was a surprise (not my main candidate) and the character will be missed (by me, at least). And it would have been nice to have found out the OWL results (although I never really expected it).

However, by the end of the book, the only main advancement was the acceptance of Fudge and the others of Voldemort's return. A pity, but I guess plot needed to be saved for the last two books.

So, back to Swordsmaster, I guess.

I've just finished it as well. It was OK, but I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't much stand-alone plot. The previous books were individual stories that also advanced the main story, but this one seemed to just meander along for a bit.

Yes they were. It was one of their biggest strengths.

Bah Humbug...

I've said it before and I'll say it again;
Harry Potter = Mallory Towers with broomsticks.

Don't expect so much of it, for disappointment will be inevitable (unless you're Ms Rowling, of course, in which case you're laughing all the way to the Maldives)

That's a bit of an exaggeration. Whilst the people who obsess over HP, camp out to buy it on the stroke of midnight, and compare it favourably to Lord of the Rings have gone way over the top, Rowlings is in a different league to Enid Blyton.

Mallory Towers had no ongoing plot (if you had any lofty abitions for the end of the series it was about the heroine - Darrell - becoming head girl) and no episode plot either. Each book covered a term and would focus on how the new girls (not yet versed in the MT ways of enlightenment) finally fitted in and became part of the class collective. HP does at least go beyond that.

About that character development...

Am I the only one who felt that Harry's character had definitely changed since the last book? All this anger stuff?

I think it was supposed to be his teenage angst phase. Yes I did notice, it made him a whole lot harder to sympathise with.
