Well, I felt that both episodes were a little on the slow side. Not a bad evening, though.

Potential

One of the few episodes that made me feel sorry for Dawn. I felt that the writers had accurately gauged the expectations of the audience and consequently produced a few surprises. The end piece with Dawn and Xander was really nicely done and Amanda proved to be a reasonable character. The 'potentials' training was quite fun to watch and provided an interesting comparison with Buffy's test in Helpless. All the "one of you becomes the Slayer when I die" stuff though - haven't the gang realised yet that this would mean there should be three Slayers ? It's only Faith's death that will matter. No particular season plot development (the First appears to be sulking somewhere) and no Giles, but otherwise a good week.

Soulless

This was an episode all about Angelus starting to break-up the gang. It was good to see Angelus reappear on a genuinely reasonable context instead of that lamentable appearance back in Eternity (nope, I haven't lost my soul, it just took the night off to get stoned). And there are some satisfying hints that something else is wrong - indicated by the whole 'missing soul' ending (also, I now believe that Angelus was not responsible for the 'drugged drinks' in Long Day's Journey). On the minus side, there was little advance of the season's plot. Were the priestesses after the Beast ? I guess we may find out at some point.

Today will be spent sorting out the last few things before my mother-in-law arrives tomorrow (clean bedding - check, floor space - check, twins - check, etc.) Also I have been printing maps of Oxford and Stratford for my plan to see As You Like It with Frances before returning for a meal with [livejournal.com profile] triskellian and [livejournal.com profile] smiorgan and then [livejournal.com profile] zandev's thirtieth birthday party at Templars.

Plus I have a couple more Friends Reunited emails to respond to. It appears that my friends all left the country after I last saw them. Hong Kong, Maryland and Germany - and one of the other who I might email is in San Francisco. Perhaps it was something I said.

...The first Buffy episode for weeks that actually seemed fun!

Maybe I can only put up with a certain amount of grand-plot-bodeyness, or something. Maybe I just miss the Watchers' Council. Or maybe I'm still mad at them for what they did to Jonathan... But this episode made up for a lot, I think. And good for them, not yielding to the obvious ending.

But, hmm, Soulless... Oh no, the incredibly important glass jar is missing! How predictable was that? Surely it could have been done better...

The Gibbon also misses Jonathan.

The Gibbon thinks that we (the audience) are not supposed to believe that one of the team is a traitor, hence the continued "that important thing went for a walk" stuff.

Possible other things that The Gibbon thinks unlikely but can still hope:

1. What if Angel is faking loosing his soul; it was a set up between him and Wesley to try to find out who the traitor is.

2. The fight between Gunn and Wesley was set up to persuade the Evil Angelus that his plan was working. Not sure why, exactly, but you never know.

Unfortunately The Gibbon doesn't believe either.
