Buffy, Angel and Exalted - Dragon Blooded
Feb. 17th, 2003 09:41 amNow that the floor has been fixed, we finally got around to watching Thursday's Angel episode.
Selfless
Probably my favourite episode of the season to date. The main plot was great, it linked up with several previous episodes (including Once More With Feeling, Bargaining, Triangle, Something Blue and Becoming - part 2) and it ended with a nice touch and the removal of an irritating character. Whilst I found the Once More With Feeling flashback a little pointless (was JW missing song writing ?) overall there were some lovely character interactions (most notably Buffy - Xander) and it was satisfying to see D'Hoffryn acting like a demon for once.
Slouching Towards Bethlehem
In contrast, this week's Angel episode was pretty dire. To start with, the producers included what I regarded as either an implausible situation or a continuity error. What was it ? Well, Lorne has just (at that moment) arrived back from a long journey and a harrowing few months in Las Vegas. So does he spend the first couple of hours moving back into his room / collapsing for the evening / going out to see other old friends ? No ! He finds and brings a human-eating demon back to the hotel (where Cordelia is effectively a mundane) and then leaves it to roam the corridors unsupervised. Also, unless I have forgotten something, I think this is the first time he has brought a dangerous demon back to Angel Investigations. A good night to start.
Even ignoring that, the episode was paceless and plotless. There were a couple of nice Lilah moments and a couple of nice Connor moments and that was about it.
Seeing the Exalted - Dragon Blooded system was a bit of a nostalgic moment for me as it brought back memories of generating White Wolf characters from the days when I actually lived in Oxford. I have generated a mage character I am rather pleased with (and have
elethiomel's honourable fighter character as a twin brother - we thought briefly of Dragonlance... although my character does not pretend to be dodgy or disdainful).
The afternoon was spent generating characters, eating pancakes and wincing as Ryan behaved like a complete ****. His behaviour has not been that bad since
bateleur's Monde game. The evening was spent chatting, eating curry and reminiscing over Robomancer (
bateleur told
chrisvenus and myself the background plot - he had meant to run several more years then never did, so we wanted to know what was actually going on).
Today all is peaceful and quiet (particularly in the baby pen) and I plan to get some writing and game planning done.
