Video Game Tourism in Polperro
Apr. 20th, 2014 12:12 pmI first met The Lost Crown back at the end of 2008, having received it as a Christmas present (I think it was one I'd asked for having played two Dark Fall games). I played it, loved it and have been waiting impatiently for the sequels to release. The game is set in Anglia, but I found out it was filmed in South-East Cornwall. So, I talked
bateleur into going for a long weekend.
We arrived on the Friday after a long and rather unpleasant drive. Fortunately the place we were staying - the Crumplehorn Inn - was easy to find. We settled in, had dinner at the Inn (chicken stroganoff for me and fish and chips for
bateleur) and then went for a brief wander around. Then we turned in for a very early night.
Saturday morning we had an excellent cooked breakfast at the Inn and then wandered out to spot some Lost Crown locations. I found half a dozen (I think) in Polperro, of which the most recognisable is Studio Cottage - the Harbour Cottage of the game where the protagonist stays.

We also visited the Museum of Smuggling and Fishing and had a good look round. It had some very interesting displays about how Polperro was mainly a smuggling den where the inland revenue were considered the villains. Then I had the idea of walking to one of the church that appears in the game as it was only a couple of miles away.
Except, the two miles wasn't flat. It was a lot of up, a bit of down, a lot more up, a bit more down and a lot more up. We got lost at one point. We stopped and had ice cream at Talland Bay (a scoop of rum and raisin and a scoop of chocolate for me). Then we eventually reached the church.

Both exterior and interior feature in the game (although the underground passages do not exist in real life). It was very beautiful and, once I'd got my breath back, I felt it might be worth the walk.
Needless to say we didn't do a lot when we got back to Polperro. We had an afternoon cream tea at the Bean and Scone. The scones were home made and the tea was very welcome. (Yes, the holiday did involve much food!)
In the evening, we had a big meal out at The Kitchen. Highly recommended. As desserts are their specialty, we skipped starters in order to ensure we reached them. I had locally caught fish for my main (sadly not listed on their website) and "Homemade clotted cream cheesecake with fresh mango, passionfruit coulis and passionfruit sorbet" for dessert - it was amazing. I think
bateleur had "Mediterranean stew using fresh locally caught fish of the day, Fowey mussels, prawns and rouille topped ciabatta" followed by "Ginger brulee, rhubarb compote and clotted cream". We shared a bottle of white Rioja. Best of all was the service - it's owned by a couple and she cooks (I think we saw her through the doorway), whilst he does front of house. He was a lovely man, as was the girl who was serving.
The next day started with another cooked breakfast and then a gentler ramble around Polperro, shopping for souvenirs (I now own a small ship in a bottle - I've always wanted one) and bribes for the duo. Oh, and postcard-writing. It was a beautiful day and I got this shot of the shore. (This is also in the game, but looking cloudy and more sinister).

We had cornish pasties for lunch and then settled in for postcard writing and a bit of reading.
I realise I haven't said a lot about the Inn - it was a nice place, and they'd given us an apartment rather than the straight bed and breakfast I'd initially requested. It had lots of nice little touches to it (for example, all the apartments were named and had a little nameplate on the door explaining where the name came from - ours was Pirian the patron saint of Cornwall and also tin miners). The bar was lovely, as the website says it's been there since the 13th century. It had lots of little lights on the ceiling and different styles of pictures of the inn on the walls. People walking up and down the metal stairs disturbed
bateleur in the night, but I slept through it and, apart from that, the other guests were extremely quiet.
We had dinner at the inn on our last night; chilli for me and curry for
bateleur. Both highly recommended. We finished by sharing chocolate cheesecake (yum!).
The morning we departed,
bateleur had smoked kippers for breakfast (which you have to order the previous morning) - he was very happy with them. I had my usual cooked breakfast, then we headed home.
It's a bit of a specialist holiday - but I loved it.
