I think there's an argument for Jerry counting as being more human in this book than the others. I think it's part of the point as Smiley becomes more like Karla as the trilogy progresses. However, I didn't like the particular person that Jerry was and he reminded me too much of the central character from The Naïve and Sentimental Lover. Both are quite human, but I need to be able to empathise with protagonists to enjoy a book. In both cases, I didn't.
