The art of selling kittens
May. 27th, 2011 12:06 pmThere's a pet shop opposite Station Approach that I walk past on my way home every day (and run past in the morning when I'm late for my train). There are adverts on the door for various animals and this usually includes at least one set of kittens. I'll sometimes read these in the evening because I'm nosy and there are often pictures.
Last week I saw an advert for a litter of kittens - the black ones were going for £25, but the black and white one that "looks like Felix" was going for £35. Instinctively this feels wrong and I felt very sorry for the black kittens.

But black cats are brilliant!

Some years ago I walked past a pet shop in Whitby which had a poster in the window saying "hamsters - buy one get one free!". For some reason this struck me as really funny.

Date: 2011-05-27 02:42 pm (UTC)A responsible owner spays their cat, especially if she's an indoor/outdoor cat. There's a big enough population of feral cats most places, we don't need more. If they plan to breed her, they keep her indoors, mate her to a known tom, and only do so when they know they can find homes for all or most of the kittens.
So an advert for a cheap litter of kittens usually means either that someone couldn't be bothered with spaying, or that they're trying to make pin money from kittens. Neither of these things makes me think they care for their cat's health, or the wellbeing of those kittens. I'd be interested to know whether the mother had received any vaccinations.
Of course there are exceptions - accidents happen - but from the attempt to make money off the Felix-lookalike, I somehow don't think the person who placed the ad you mention is one such...

Date: 2011-05-27 02:46 pm (UTC)I don't really understand, I think black cats are great. Especially when they have a tail the size of the rest of the cat :-)
(Also yes, comments about probably being a bit too profit orientated to be convinced about their care of the cats)
