Heroes season 3, episodes 11 and 12
Oct. 18th, 2009 01:34 pmSummary (mostly a list of where everyone's now got to): The Eclipse has gone, so everyone has now regained their powers. Peter, Nathan and the Haitian triumph over Baron Samedi, but in the process Nathan effectively switches sides. Following agreement between Tracey and Arthur, Nathan takes control of the "powers" operation and successfully inject a military man. Sylar is told by Bennet that the Petrellis are not his family and that Elle knew. Sylar kills Elle and reverts to bad guy status, taking a lie detector power. Hiro teleports himself and Claire sixteen years earlier to the events of Company Man. Hiro has his memory restored by his mother - a healer - and she gives him the Catalyst, changing the past. However, Arthur shows up, steals Hiro's powers and the Catalyst, then throws Hiro off the building (to land on a pole) and teleports himself and Claire back to the present. Matt, Daphne and Ando return to New York and gain the fabled Mendez sketchbook to discover Hiro is lost in the past. Mohinder escapes Pinehurst, goes to see Maya, but arrives after the Eclipse ends and so regains his warped power (and runs away from her). Finally, the Haitian and Peter attempt to kill Arthur; Arthur does not believe Peter can do it, but Peter eventually pulls the trigger just as Sylar turns up. Sylar stops the bullet, asks Arthur whether he is his father, and makes the bullet kill him when he lies.
General comments: The plot pace is continuing to be strong and I'm continuing to like how things are left, although I'm less keen on how many of them look like a plot reverse following audience feedback (eg. Sylar not belonging to the Petrelli family, Elle's sudden death). On the subject, however, Sylar is still way over-powered. For once it is Hiro and not Peter stuck in Suckiest Position Ever and I will be interested to see how they get him back given that there ain't no time travellers left. However - the continuity errors just keep coming. Similarly, there seems too little in the way of plausible character development - Nathan's switch, in particular, just seemed "Huh?".
Continuity errors and other weirds: As a follow-up to my last entry - Isaac's last drawings of Hiro were for the end of season one and therefore even the stuff left in the sketchbook should be way out of date (as an aside - I wonder if we will we see the other sketches - eg. Charles and Peter/Simone - no answers please!). What else? Ah yes, how did Arthur know where to find Claire and Hiro? That Bennet and Elle knew all along that Sylar wasn't a Petrelli is weird (and one from earlier - when Elle turns up and attacks Sylar at the end of season 2, there's no indication of any previous meeting between these two).
Note: Possibly a final update on the lists given I'm nearly at the end of Villains:
Angela's Heroes
- Peter
- Matt
- Daphne
- Hiro
- Ando
- Claire
- Noah Bennet
- The Haitian
Arthur's Villains
- Nathan
- Elle
- Tracey
- Fear guy
- Flame guy
(and an unwilling Mohinder)
Odd One Out
- Sylar
Good/OK things:
- Arthur Petrelli as chief bad guy.
- Arthur's death.
- That Nathan changed sides.
- Peter and the Haitian; loved their scenes.
- Sylar choosing to take responsibility for Arthur's death (because he took it from Peter?).
- Hiro's mother and that she was the catalyst (the actress was also Ivanova's predecessor starring in the Babylon 5 pilot episode).
- That Hiro was briefly "the light".
- The revival of Isaac's sketchbook.
- That Sylar isn't a Petrelli.
- Seth Green (Oz from Buffy).
- That the Catalyst is gone (but there's still some formula left).
Bad/less OK things:
- Why Nathan changed sides.
- Sylar tells Peter he isn't a killer, after Peter has fired a shot that would have killed Arthur were it not for Sylar's intervention.
- Why Isaac's sketchbook was important.
- Elle's death, just seemed unnecessary.
- That the Sylar-not-being-a-Petrelli plot looked like a sudden reversal rather than planned.
- Not enough Matt.
Just one more episode before the end of Villains, then we'll be into Fugitives.
