Heroes episode 34 (episode 11 of season 2). The final episode - a good cliffhanger and a bad one.
Summary: Peter takes out Hiro and then Adam takes the sword from him. They go down to where the virus is and Peter has to attack the door with his mind. Bennet tells Elle about her father's testing of her and then strikes a deal with Bob to stop Claire from publishing his notes. West does not want his secret revealed, so Claire gives him his own file and the implication is that they've split. Bennet returns home on the deal that his family will be untouched if he returns to the Company. Maya discovers Sylar killed her brother whilst Mohinder discovers that Sylar was injected by the Company. Sylar shoots Maya, forces Mohinder to save her with Claire's blood, then takes the samples of Mohinder's and Claire's blood to cure himself. Elle checks her own file, finds it empty, then spots Sylar on the camera of Mohinder's lab. She arrives in time to save Molly, Maya and Mohinder from Sylar. Niki and Micah rescue Monica but Niki is left trapped in a burning building which explodes. Peter opens the door, then takes on Hiro and Matt whilst Adam goes in for the virus. However, when facing Nathan, it gives Hiro the opportunity to go in after Adam. Nathan makes Peter realise that Adam has used him and Peter arrives in the room in time to stop the virus from smashing on the floor where Adam has dropped it. Hiro speaks to Adam one last time and learns of Adam's determination to use the plague to wipe out humanity and start afresh and consequently teleports them both away. He traps Adam in a coffin buried underground so he can do no more damage, then returns to his job and to Ando. Nathan, fed up with the mess left by the previous generation, asks Matt to arrange a press conference to go public about the abilities. However, he is shot just before he reveals the truth. Then his mother receives a phone call where she agrees it had to be done but says to the unknown caller "you do realise you have opened Pandora's box." At the end of the episode, volume 3 begins and Sylar injects himself and his abilities return.
Naming the episode: A good one - the episode is all about power. Sylar regains his and the issue of power through keeping abilities secret arises with West, with Claire and with the Company.
Comments: Peter takes far too long to realise Adam's agenda. Whilst there are earlier hints that he's starting to reconsider, it's only after he's fought both Hiro and Matt - former allies - and faces Nathan that he recognises the truth. I liked the shooting of Nathan and the implication that another force was behind it. However, I disliked Sylar's restoration. It's just a return to the first season all over again - as disappointing as the appearance of Niki/Gina was. Likewise, Bennet's return to the Company is disappointing, I'm not big on repeat elements. On the plus side, the virus wasn't released; I really expected them to and was pleased it didn't happen. Also on the plus side - a lovely ending for Adam.
Cast list absences: None of those still living - although only a brief appearance from Ando. However, it looked like West and Adam have exited the scene even though neither are dead.
Continuity issues raised: The stupid - again.
Paintings realised to date:
Elle/Bob: More daddy/daughter issues. I assume that both will return and it will be interesting to see how Elle changes (I hope).
Claire/Bennet: It looks like they're right back where they started, although now the secrets are gone.
West: Gone, thank god. I hope he doesn't come back. I really didn't like him as a character. Plus his entire personal plot was "Claire's love interest".
Hiro/Ando: Also back where they started, but only spatially. I think Hiro had the best season of the lot and I loved his resolution with Adam.
Mohinder/Molly/Maya: I saw this as a set-up for the start of season three. I guess Mohinder is still part of the Company; although there is the question of what he makes of them injecting Sylar.
Sylar: It's just a huge shame. He should have died at the end of season one. Given that they were desperate to bring him back, I thought it was good he'd come back without powers. But, sadly, that's no longer true.
Adam: This is a much better resolution of a season villain - about the one thing I feel season two has over season one.
Peter: Well, yes. Let's move on when it comes to his powers of reasoning. Good to see him finally reunited with Nsthan though.
Matt/Nathan: An excellent pairing and the flying stuff was great. Nathan also did the whole "save the world thing" - although it looks like he may not survive it.
Monica/Micah/Niki: Micah appears to have lost two parents in one season. That's got to suck. I'm glad Monica has survived; I doubt that Niki has though.

Date: 2009-10-11 02:24 pm (UTC)Nope. But it's shipped and I'm hoping it will arrive tomorrow. At which point I have to work out how I'm watching it. With the first two seasons, I'd seen them both through before I started writing up episode reviews. However, if we do an episode a night, I might write reviews as it goes along.

Date: 2009-10-12 06:39 am (UTC)It's been a while since I watched the episode, but Hiro was there independently, wasn't he? So if Peter hadn't been there, Hiro could have stopped Adam at the start of the episode, before he got anywhere near the virus. To me that looks like a beautiful setup for a 'trying to change the future causes it to happen' kind of thing, and it nearly goes that way too. Yet this time, for no reason that I can identify, the virus isn't released after all. That's nice, but it doesn't make sense to me that way!
I have heard, of course, that originally it *was* going to be released, but the writers' strike made them change the ending, so perhaps I can let it go. But it still feels a bit wrong somehow...
