Heroes episode 20. This episode is one of my top five from season one.
Summary: (Note - all people are future versions of themselves except Ando and Present Hiro). Ando and Present Hiro arrive five years in the future to discover that the bomb has exploded. They go to Isaac's apartment and meet Hiro there. Hiro tells them that the future is a bad place and he has been mapping the timelines to determine where to go back to in order to stop the bomb. His plan was to ask Peter to save the cheerleader. Ando and Present Hiro confirm this took place, so he starts planning to send them back, because Present Hiro has to kill Sylar, when they are interrupted. Homeland Security, including Matt and the Haitian, burst in and capture Present Hiro, whilst the other two escape. Hiro then plans to free Present Hiro and says he needs Peter's help to do so. He takes Ando to Vegas where they meet Niki, now Peter's girlfriend. However, she tells them that Peter will not help them. Instead she gives Hiro Bennet's location. It turns out that Peter is present, but invisible, and he asks why they were there. Meanwhile Present Hiro is being interrogated by Matt, who is frustrated that his memories for the last five years are gone. Matt telephones the President, Nathan, to explain this and agrees to try again with Present Hiro. Nathan then meets with Mohinder and they discuss how the genetic condition can not be reversed - instead Nathan suggests genocide to deal with dangerous people. There is also much television coverage of the bomb - it is the fifth anniversary of the event - and Sylar is shown to be responsible. Hiro and Ando meet with Bennet (being assisted by Hannah in hiding special people) and Hiro asks for the whereabouts of DL, Candice and Molly Walker as they will be able to help him rescue Present Hiro (all three are people Hiro brought to Bennet). Bennet is not prepared to help until Ando points out that Claire is alive. Mohinder arrives in New York and examines the time map that Hiro designed. Remembering the train journey with Peter, Mohinder realises what Hiro is planning to do. Nathan arrives and Mohinder tries to persuade him to accept Hiro's plan, but instead Nathan tells Mohinder to kill Present Hiro. Claire is currently in the diner where Charlie worked, planning a future with her finance. Bennet shows up with new id for her and tells her to leave. Meanwhile Matt bursts in on Hiro and Ando, knocking Hiro unconscious. However, they are saved by Peter who takes them back to Niki's bar and tells Ando that he died in the explosion. Meanwhile Matt talks to Bennet about how they are both hiding children of interest. It becomes clear that Bennet is only hiding people with safe powers and is handing the others over to Homeland Security. After thanking Bennet for his help with Janice and the baby, Matt mindreads Bennet for Claire's location, then shoots Bennet (Hannah's dead body is also shown). Matt turns up at the diner and takes Claire. She is seen examining the family pictures in Petrelli mansion when Nathan turns up and speaks to her, he says a great deal about power and eliminating the competition and, eventually, is revealed to be Sylar posing as Nathan. He kills Claire. Peter and Niki have a row about Peter helping Hiro during which Peter reveals that he was the explosion, not Sylar, and Nathan was trying to protect him by saying otherwise. Peter, Hiro and Ando then take on Homeland Security; they get through the ground floor without difficulty. The second floor proves unexpectedly easy when Mohinder changes sides and, following the pictures in Isaac's final 9th Wonder comic, kills the Haitian instead of Present Hiro. Peter, Hiro, Ando, Present Hiro and Mohinder gather on the top floor, but Hiro is shot before helping Present Hiro to return to the present. Matt calls Nathan and tells him that Peter is stopping them from killing Hiro whereupon Nathan flies over, pulls Peter through the door, becomes Sylar and attacks him. Ando and Present Hiro escape just in time, returning to the present.
Comments: This is a great episode in many ways; it properly links up with the earlier sighting of Future Hiro, it shows that Linderman's plan fails and it leaves Hiro and Ando with plans to save the world that the viewer already knows are flawed. However, there is still hope that they will be enough - as it is not clear whether removing Sylar might be enough as he might be responsible for the negativity following the bomb (when did he become Nathan?) and his presence might have tipped the balance to Peter exploding. It's also a fascinating episode in terms of where everyone ended up. It's apparent that Micah and Ando were killed by the bomb whilst DL and Candice were killed by Sylar after Bennet handed them over. What happened to Ted? It's not answered here.
Cast list absences: No DL, Micah or Ted. Technically no Nathan.
Claire: Is the dark hair purely a disguise? I felt this was a bit of an odd, sad future for Claire - working in a diner until Sylar finally catches up with her. Particularly compared to so many of the others.
Mr Bennet: Doing his anti-company bit is a suitably grey way. I thought his role of working with both Hiro and with Matt was a lovely and realistic touch for this character.
Matt: Due to some of the exchanges with other people, Matt makes it clear he had to choose sides. He's clearly not happy with where he ended up and has become something of a thug and seems much less interested in detective work. One slight flaw - why does Mr Mindreader never suss that Nathan is Sylar? He was Sylar for the handover of Candice and DL after all.
Ando: Ando gets a good episode here, only to discover that he did not survive the bomb. I liked Peter's comments that it was Ando and his friendship that meant so much to Hiro. Also, I liked Ando's reactions to the different people he had met before.
Hiro: Future Hiro is just great. Also, that he worked out how to save everything (pity it was on faulty information about who exploded). And a terrorist? I would have liked to have heard more about the war.
Mohinder: Mohinder's best episode in terms of doing the right thing and figuring stuff out, I think. He works out the time map and he saves Hiro. Also he has a great exchange with Matt; Mohinder: "Is a time traveller any more strange than a man who can read minds?" Long pause. Matt: "Yeah, he is."
Nathan/Sylar: Lovely link back to Peter's dream of Nathan becoming Sylar (in Fallout). Also, it's a chilling look at Nathan that Sylar can play him whilst furthering his own goals without being suspected. Oh, and Nathan has succeeded in his goal of becoming President - no sign of Angela (or Linderman) though. I assume with Sylar around she must be dead.
Niki: Niki has returned to stripping for a career, but Jessica is no longer there and she is haunted by Micah's death. Her relationship with Peter seems plausible, although lacking in honesty as he never previously told her he caused the explosion.
Peter: A big question is, of course, where and how did he get the scar? I'm guessing the sword (but no-one say please!). He gets some nice dialogue as well - Hiro: "Is everything OK?" Peter: "No. Let's go fix it." Finally, he's recognised as being extremely powerful which, given the powers he has finally got control of, makes a lot of sense.
