Heroes episode 19. This is my favourite episode of season one.
Summary: Bennett is in a cell, Claire comes in, supposedly caught, but he quickly determines that she is Candice trying to get information out of him. his boss then talks to him and says that he's only still alive because he has not received the order to kill. Linderman tells Nathan that the bomb needs to explode to put Nathan in the White House and to turn people to support him as they react better to fear than to happiness (a plotline I've seen elsewhere). Nathan is unhappy with this because he believes the explosion is caused by Peter. Isaac finishes the last ever 9th Wonder and gives his sketchbook to the delivery man. Bennett uses Matt's ability to talk him through breaking out of his cell, freeing Ted and then freeing Bennett himself. Sylar attacks Peter, after a brief exchange he kills him with a piece of glass in the base of the skull. However, Mohinder then knocks him unconscious with a board before he can dissect Peter's head. Angela tells Claire that neither Peter nor Nathan can help her and she should come to Paris to grow up and prepared to make choices about her future. Their debate is interrupted by Mohinder bringing Peter's dead body to the house. Linderman asks Jessica for Micah. She refuses, so he uses Candice to take Micah anyway. Bennett, Matt and Ted talk about going to New York and destroying the Company's tracking system. Matt says that he got the name "Linderman" out of Bennett's boss' head - Bennett did not know Linderman ran the Company. Nathan is summoned back to the house to find Peter dead. Claire comes down, asks to see the body, then realises that the glass is still in the base of the skull. She removes it and Peter recovers. Sylar awakes to find the computer destroyed and the list gone; however, the scrap of paper with Isaac's address is still there. Mohinder returns to his apartment and phones the Company asking for help to take down Sylar. Nathan and Peter discuss what happened and, on Angela's entrance, discover that she knew about them all along. Nathan calls Claire to speak with him and asks her to go to Paris; evidently considering going through with Linderman's plan. Sylar turns up at Isaac's apartment, Isaac tells him that he can't fight the future. Sylar kills Isaac and takes his power. Hiro and Ando in the future decide to find out what went wrong before returning to the present. Looking for Isaac, they find his apartment full of timelines and a future Hiro there.
Comments: I love this episode for the sequence in the middle between Bennett and Matt. It's funny and just really nice. Also, Isaac eventually get a good episode - I liked him more here, accepting his fate and giving the messenger his sketchbook, than I did across the rest of the season. Also there are some lovely hints - Angela implying that she has a power to Claire, Linderman talking about the "others" in the previous generation and generally briefing his protege, Jessica indicating that there might be limits to her immorality when Micah is threatened, the news that Linderman runs the Company (although, why did the company try to take Nathan then, back in an early episode? Is it not properly joined-up?).
Cast list absences: Brief glimpses of DL, Micah, Hiro and Ando.
Claire/Angela: The question of whether Claire will go to Paris is still open. It is interesting that Angela seemed much more prepared to help her granddaughter than either of her sons - perhaps she felt they had already been given help (Peter is the youngest and ten years older than Claire)? Also, Claire is the only one that Angela effectively tells she has an ability to. When I first saw this episode, I wondered whether Peter's visions came from his mother (I still don't know - so no spoilers please).
Mr Bennett/Matt/Ted: Lovely break out of jail sequence. Although it seems Bennett knows a lot less about the Company than he thought. Also, some great dialogue with Matt: "Fortunately for me, this is a one-way conversation." Wonder why the Company were about to ditch Matt - was he too powerful for them?
Candice: She's getting nastier here with her threat to make Bennett see horrific things. Also, it turns out that she has direct contact with Linderman - why is she so valued?
Linderman: A good sequence with Nathan at the beginning, particularly going over the paintings and talking about the other Heroes. His "I realised I couldn't heal one person at a time" is reminiscent of Peter's "I've been trying to save one person at a time, but now I realise I'm meant for something bigger" - coincidence (the same writing team, after all) or supposed to be comparable?
Hiro/Ando: Basically a set-up for their adventures in the future. Loved future Hiro. Also, nice continuity - they still think Sylar is in captivity (as Isaac told them).
Mohinder/Sylar: Nice to see Mohinder score one over Sylar - although why he didn't then shoot him (having only just tried to do so) ... well, that's the sort of thing that annoys me in this.
Isaac/Sylar: This was a really great Isaac episode - he got to answer Sylar back, few people do. I particularly liked: "I know why you're here." "I'm here to kill you." Surprised pause. "That's usually when the screaming starts." Also an interesting "Eden" moment - Sylar appeared to try to use her power (he had the weird voice: "Show Me [the future where I die]"), but to no obvious effect. Is that because she shot her brain out and Sylar couldn't properly take her ability? Or does he have it fine, but Isaac couldn't do what he asked (having sent the comics away)? Also, it's roughly the same voice that Peter uses at the end of "Unexpected" when he throws Isaac across the room saying "Don't lie to me" - does Peter also have Eden's power (they did meet, after all) or do the writers just have a thing about voice effects?
Niki/Jessica/DL/Micah: DL has sussed that it's Jessica and he's not happy. Now that Jessica has failed to stop Linderman taking Micah, maybe Niki will come back on top.
Nathan/Peter: By the end, it looks as though Nathan is committed to Linderman's plan now that he knows Peter will (probably) survive. I also liked the sequence where he commented that he is who he is because of his brother (Peter disagrees). It sits nicely alongside his scene with Claire when he tells her that people generally don't think well of him and they are probably right not to.
