Episode 12.
Summary: It's two weeks on and Peter is in hospital - back in New York - in a coma. He's getting visions of the explosion, but with an extra (unnamed) character. His mother, Nathan and Simone all appear at his bedside and the doctors think he may die soon as his heart can't take much more. Nathan asks Simone to take him to see the paintings after blaming her for letting Peter see the one of himself dead, thus sending him to Texas. Hiro and Ando trace the sword to a New York museum - it is the sword of a Japanese hero. Ando says that the runes on it mean Talent and also Godsend. Hiro says how the original hero found it in a pool of ice. Hiro slows time (the result of his best efforts) and then steals the sword only to discover it is a fake and the original belongs to Linderman. Sylar is still in custody and the only power that the Company can trace within him is telekinesis. Claire is keeping up the pretense with her father, but is also seeing the Haitian behind his back. The Haitian tells her she can not contact Peter as Peter is being watched. She eventually seeks out Zack and restarts her friendship with him through refilming the tapes. Mohinder is visited by the FBI who tell him that Sarah Ellis - Eden - has been found dead. Mr Bennett then visits him and leaves the Company's contact details. Ted is in the desert testing his powers. Matt and Audrey call the FBI in on the Company, but find nothing. Audrey's boss is furious. Matt returns to his wife and starts to tell her about his powers. Nathan and Simone go to Isaac's loft to find the painter returned. Nathan finds the picture of the exploding man and tells the other two about Peter's vision. Hiro and Ando turn up and Simone finally starts to believe in it all. She gives Hiro a painting and sends him back to Las Vegas to exchange the painting for the sword through Linderman. DL returns the money to Linderman, but is annoyed to discover that this may not be the end of the arrangements with him. DL is struggling to be a single parent to Micah. Niki is in prison and she is told she may face the death penalty. However, Jessica's intervention means she will take a psychiatric evaluation. Peter wakes up from his visions, leaves the hospital in a hurry and tries to arrange to fly to the desert. However, whilst making the call he encounters the new figure from his visions - the invisible man.
Comments: Christopher Eccleston - I think it's about here that I really started to get hooked on Heroes the first time around. This is a rare episode in terms of it setting the time frame for season one. Through Isaac, Ando and the fast-forward at the start, it becomes apparent that there are three weeks to go before the election, it is two weeks since Peter collapsed, but Issac has been away for three weeks. Now Isaac disappeared in episode 6 therefore probably about four to five weeks have gone in total, just over a month. A reasonable episode - sadly, lots of characters have dispersed again, although there's quite a gathering in Isaac's loft in the middle.
Character absences: None.
Claire/Zack/Haitian: I liked watching Claire and Zack connect again. Also, I enjoyed the scenes with the Haitian. It was interesting to hear him refer to the powers as gifts from God.
Petrelli family: One of those rare episodes when Nathan and his mother are both concerned about Peter rather than laying into him.
Hiro/Ando: The museum theft is great. Also, I like how Ando takes such pleasure in Hiro's ability.
Hiro/Nathan: Probably the best comedy act in Heroes. The whole action that Hiro does when he says "Flying Man!". When Nathan asks him to "Keep it down", he does the same thing again, but with less movement and volume.
Nathan/Simone/Isaac/Hiro/Ando: Nathan effectively tells Isaac that the exploding man is Peter. Isaac wants Simone back, although with limited response, despite the fact that she now believes he can paint the future. Hiro and Ando are packed off with the dinosaur picture to go back to where they began - Las Vegas.
Sylar: The cockroach gets a moment with Sylar. Plus the guy examining his is Claire's fake bio-dad. It's interesting that they comment that only Sylar's telekinesis can be traced by the Company - I wonder whether this becomes relevant later. I assume this is because it was the first stolen power.
Mohinder/Mr Bennett: Mohinder gets Bennett to admit that his father knew more about the genetics than the Company do. Also of interest - Mr Bennett asked "are you on the list?" and Mohinder does not reply. However, Mohinder does not trust the Company at all. As an aside, it's good to hear Mr Bennett defending Eden and saying she was a good person.
Niki/Jessica/DL/Micah: This is the first episode where Niki (rather than Jessica) demonstrates super-strength (I didn't notice, but this was made clear in the audio commentary). It's not a bad set of scenes, but is mostly about establishing Niki in prison and DL struggling at home. Plus the promise of a fun psychiatric evaluation to come.
Matt/Audrey/Janice: I really felt for Matt here; he's right and the FBI are useless. Just why couldn't they find Sylar and the underground complex? Also, good to see him telling Janice about his ability, which may suggest some plot movement there.
Peter/Invisible Man: Glad he's not going to remain in a coma for several episodes; and I note he had the same idea as Ted. Plus - Christopher Eccelston. This promises great things for the next few episodes.
