The New Star Wars and Portal Stories: Mel
Jan. 2nd, 2016 06:26 pmWe saw the new Star Wars today. I thought it was good overall. It contained a number of references back to episode IV and enough new stuff to not feel like a reboot. Also the acting was good, the new cast were well-chosen. I think saying anything more would be spoiler territory.
Last night I finished Portal Stories: Mel. This is a mod game made by Portal fans using the same game engine. I thought it was reasonably good overall. It's not quite got the same production feel as the games it's based on, but it's pretty close. My main complaint is that there's a large section of the game which is doing level puzzles, but they're very hard and not really broken up by anything else. The original game got around this by being quite short and throwing in some turrets to have fun with. The sequel similarly interspersed levels with bits of story and navigation/exploration. Mel could have done with a bit more of that, particularly as I found the puzzles hard. On the plus side, there's little in there that requires fast reactions (my worst point) and the ending is very good.
